Tourism on Trial - Egypt
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv In Egypt security problems have collapsed the tourism industry, one of the cornerstones of its economy. As radical Islamists push for strict regulations on tourists, Egypt's population is struggling. "Before the revolution, we used to get ten buses here every hour," a stall keeper sighs. The lack of tourist business has afflicted over 3.5 million people who depend on the traffic for their income. But while they had hoped that the end of the revolution would bring tourists back, there is now another threat looming on the horizon. It may sound bizarre, but the radical Islamist Salafists believe that tourists should only be able to see the pyramids through a veil of wax, arguing "there is a religious decree against keeping them as they are". Unfortunately for the tourist industry, they hold 25% of the seats in the new democratically elected parliament. Under the Salafists public displays of affection would also be banned, as would men and women swimming together. In fact, their decrees would probably force Egypt's most famous beach resort, Sharm El Sheik, to close down. But as tour operator Abdis Salaam says, those in the industry are braced for a fight: "We will stand up against them. We are prepared to create a new revolution if our livelihood is affected." SBS

Insecurity will impact tourism industry negatively
www.ntv.co.ke The Kenya Tourism Board is calling on the Government to intensify security in the country ahead of the festive season or else the country could incur further losses in tourism numbers. KTB's Managing Director Muriithi Ndegwa said this as he gave an overall performance of the sector from the month of October to November 2012The figures indicate a decline in international arrivals fueled by the recent spate of terrorist attacks coupled with killings in Kenya's Tana Delta area and the ongoing Eurozone crisis. NTV's Aby Agina has more.

Counting the Cost - The tourism business
This week we are going to take you on holiday on Counting the Cost. Tourism is the biggest service industry in the world and we are right in the middle of peak season. Between May and August - summer in the Northern Hemisphere - some 415 million tourists are expected to travel on their holidays. The top five destinations last year, in terms of number of visitors were Italy with 46 million, Spain with 56,7 million, China with 57,6 million, and the US was second with over 62 million, and at the top of the list is France with 79,5 million visitors. Down the other end of the scale though, the Middle East and North Africa took a massive hit because of the Arab Spring - losing about five million tourists last year. But we are going to focus on Egypt where there are signs of a recovery. The number of tourists jumped 29 per cent between January and May this year compared to the same period a year ago, when the revolution was still dominating the headlines. Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland looks at some of the efforts being made to bring tourists back to Egypt. We also look at toursim in the Philippines, and how that ongoing dispute over the South China Sea is keeping Chinese tourists away. And of course London - the Olympics are in town and there is a packet to be made, but why are these people leaving their homes during the Games?

euronews focus - Taking the pulse of medical tourism in of South Korea
www.euronews.com South Korea has been making a huge effort over the past few years to develop medical tourism as one of its new growth industries. To make life easier for foreign visitors, information centres have been set up to offer advice and guidance to a growing number of foreign patients (mainly from Japan, China and Russia), who come to South Korea in search of all manner of medicinal marvels. "We help about 60 foreign patients per day, which means that there were more than 12000 in our first year of business. They ask for very diverse treatments, from cosmetic surgery to traditional medicine," explains Ki Rip Park, from a Medical Tourism Information Centre in Busan. In Seoul, business at the Jaseng Hospital of Eastern Medicine is booming. It specialises in non-surgical spine treatments and has an international clinic to accommodate its foreign patients, with translators on hand to help out. Naoko, from Japan, suffers from severe back pain and has become a regular here. She gets Chuna therapy, as well as a mixture of electric stimulation acupuncture and herbal medication. Naoko Kawaragi, a medical tourist told euronews: "Sometimes I cannot walk, I cannot stand, I cannot stretch. I started coming here two years ago. Now I come here every three months and I stay for three days. Before I couldn't even walk." Treatments combine old and new - East and West - a medical fusion that allows new treatments to develop, attracting an increasing number of Westerners along the ...

euronews focus - Venezuela reaches for new tourism heights
www.euronews.com The highest peaks in Venezuela are at the centre of an ambitious re-building programme. As part of an effort to reconstruct the country's tourism industry it will build the Mérida cable car, which is the longest and highest in the world. Construction at almost five kilometres up in the northern Andes on Pico Espejo takes nerve and precise planning. Four hundred and fifty engineers work around the clock, battling severe weather conditions and the altitude. Being in a National Park the project has to be sensitive to the environment, recycling materials and limiting the extent of the works' effects on the surrounding area. The cable car has to lift its own building materials - up to 2000 tonnes per trip. The Venezuelan government is putting 246-million euros into the project. The tourism development coordinator for the Mérida cable car, Jaime Bautista told euronews: "Beyond the economic investment, beyond the technological achievement, this cable car aims to create environmental awareness, stimulate visitors to know nature and to enjoy high mountain activities." The Merida region is a favorite destination for Venezuelans. Tired of tropical temperatures, it is something of an exotic novelty to spend time in the Páramo heights having to wear gloves and woolly hats for a few days. The new cable car, due to open at the end of 2013 should attract international visitors to Mérida too. Venezuela's socialist Government has recently approved a new tourism law, aiming ...

Pearl River Delta - Shamian Island Tourist Spot - Guang Zhou, China
Shamian Island doesn't really look like an island but it really is one. It is beside the Pearl River Delta area, with fresh clean air. Most people visit this place to view its Gothic architecture left after the British rule. The streets are pleasant to watch and you can see high rise buildings from the beach area. However, there are lots of dancing and exercising groups with their music there, so be prepared for a bit of noise as you explore the place. We enjoyed our visit there.

Travel Wild - The Yucatan Tourism Reviving the Mayan Culture
The Yucatan is a place where dense jungles hide the ruins of a once powerful Mayan civilization. The disappearance of the Mayan civilization is still largely unanswered but to understand a little more Lin goes in search of the Mayans ancestors. She encounters the "Sobadores"; traditional bone healers, who are using skills passed down through the generations and found an unexpected modern-day niche in Mexicos flourishing luxury Spa industry. Our exploration of how the Mayan people are reclaiming their heritage and that of others leads us to a restored Hacienda owned by a community collective. It is one of a number of such lavish properties that were once owned by the Spanish Conquistadors that are now recognized by UNESCO for its heritage values. Everything about the hotel reflects the regions rich tapestry of history, making staying there more akin to a living history lesson in luxury, than an eco-friendly place to rest the head.Beyond the decadent comforts of the Hacienda, the chatter of spider monkeys can be heard from the densely tangled jungle and Lin joins a local Mayan guide who takes points out native plant species that are being harvested once again for use in traditional medicines and spa treatments. We also visit the peninsulas incredible biospheres, and the sanctuaries dedicated to protect the flora and fauna of Mexico. It offers visitors an unforgettable hands-on experience and a greater appreciation of the ecological wonders often overlooked by ...

I was asked to go to Basilicata, Italy to participate in a Digital Diary contest for the tourism board to show one of the most untouched parts of Italy... It was a rushed week, and I had to make two videos. I had two days to put this one together, so I apologize about the little knicks here and there, hehe.
It won the Grand Prize at the competition, and I am still in shock about the whole thing. It really was like a dream!
