NASA - Biography of John H. Glenn "On February 20, 1962, Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States. Launched from Cape Canaveral (Florida) Launch Complex 14, he completed a successful three-orbit mission around the earth, reaching a maximum altitude (apogee) of approximately 162 statute miles and an orbital velocity of approximately 17500 miles per hour. Glenn's "Friendship 7" Mercury spacecraft landed approximately 800 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral in the vicinity of Grand Turk Island. Mission duration from launch to impact was 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds." www.nasa.gov

A comprehensive picture report on the historic flight of Colonel John H Glenn, Jr in his "Friendship Seven". As the world watches, dozens of cameras record each phase of the flight from the pre-dawn hours to his arrival aboard the aircraft carrier "Randolph". A camera in the Mercury capsule catches some remarkable pictures showing the grinning reactions of Colonel Glenn as he girdles the globe three times. Nearly everything about the flight is perfect - small mechanical malfunctions are quickly corrected by the astronaut and he comes back to earth within a few miles of the pre-determined area. 2011 Medal of Freedom Recipient John Glenn
Medal of Freedom recipient John Glenn is a former United States Marine Corps pilot, astronaut, and United States Senator. In 1962, he was the third American in space and the first American to orbit the Earth. After retiring from the Marine Corps, Glenn was elected to the US Senate in Ohio in 1974. He was an architect and sponsor of the 1978 Nonproliferation Act and served as Chairman of the Senate Government Affairs committee from 1987 until 1995. In 1998, Glenn became the oldest person to visit space at the age of 77. He retired from the Senate in 1999. Glenn is a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. Located under the arches of Waterloo station, for over 100 years boys have gone to the Fitzroy Lodge to discover the essence of their masculinity. In Port issue 7, we spoke to David Matthews, Glenn Charles and Daniel Day-Lewis about their thoughts on boxing. Here, we see the club in action and remember Mick Carney, MBE the “thin…stylish, handsome dog” at the heart of the Fitzroy Lodge who sadly passed away last year.

This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. Our imaginations had behaved like a super fertilizer and grown a grotesque monstrosity in our minds. Remember, our imaginations are incredibly powerful. They can work against us, creating horrible images that leave us paralyzed with fear and they can also work for us, building a world where everything we do is an adventure, a miracle. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.

John Glenn & President John F. Kennedy
On February 20, 1962, Glenn piloted the Mercury-Atlas 6 "Friendship 7" spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States. Launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, he completed a successful three-orbit mission around the earth, reaching a maximum altitude (apogee) of approximately 162 statute miles and an orbital velocity of approximately 17500 miles per hour. Glenn's "Friendship 7" Mercury spacecraft landed approximately 800 miles southeast of KSC in the vicinity of Grand Turk Island. Mission duration from launch to impact was 4 hours, 55 minutes, and 23 seconds. Immediately after his mission Lt. Colonel Glenn flew from the aircraft carrier USS Randolph to Grand Turk Island in the Bahamas for two days of debriefing and medical tests. On February 23, 1962, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson flew to the island to escort Glenn on a flight to Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. At the air force base Glenn was reunited with his family, including his mother, Clara and his father, the senior John H. Glenn. The Glenn family, accompanied by Vice President Johnson and other Mercury 7 astronauts, then proceeded by automobile to Cape Canaveral where they were scheduled to meet with President John F. Kennedy. The eighteen-mile trip between the air force base and the NASA facility turned into a parade as thousands of people from around Cocoa Beach stood along the highway to greet the returned astronaut.
