9. Ethology
(April 19, 2010) Robert Sapolsky looks at the biology of behavior through the ethological lens: observing animals in various natural environments, in their own language. He explores behavioral variety, the importance of gene environment interactions, experimental testing of fixed action patterns, the releasing of informational stimuli, and neuroethology. SCI: 400 Ethology Principles of Animal Behavior
This course is designed to introduce students to the specialized field of animal behavior analysis and the various conditions that shape both simple and complex behavioral constructs. In this course students explore animal behavior through the study of function, causation, development, and evolutionary history. We consider in-depth studies of fixed action patterns, animal communication, and imprinting, and use these analyzes to shed light on the development of behaviors throughout vertebrate and invertebrate taxa.

International Wolf Center 8 April 2011 - Ethology Quiz
We had an opportunity to provide a short clip without narration, giving viewers an opportunity to identify behaviors displayed by Aidan and Denali. The clip is then repeated with narration identifying the behaviors. There's no grading of this quiz, just a short clip to reveal ones' interpretation skills.

Pt.1 SCI: 400 Ethology Principles of Animal Behavior
SCI: 400 Ethology, Principles of animal behavior. In this lesson we explore reproductive behaviors in humans and other animals in response to low-resource and high-mortality environments. Additionally, we discuss physiological adaptations in humans to low-resource environments, and what effects those adaptations may have on individuals that transition into high-resource environments.

ETHOLOGY (Wiley-Blackwell): Male post-ejaculatory mounting in the ring-tailed lemur
Male mate guarding can take many forms but often involves aggression toward male conspecifics and continued proximity with a female. Parga, JA (2010), Male Post-Ejaculatory Mounting in the Ring-Tailed Lemur (Lemur catta): A Behavior Solicited by Females? (Ethology, 116: 832--842. doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0310.2010.01797.x,) describes a previously undocumented behavior in a promiscuous primate, the ring-tailed lemur: post-ejaculatory (PE) mounting. PE mounting was documented across eight mating seasons in a ring-tailed lemur colony on St. Catherines Island (SCI), USA. During PE mounting, a male remounts a female following ejaculation and clasps her midsection as if to mate again, but copulation does not occur. This is an interview with the study's author, Joyce A. Parga, about her hypothesis on PE mounting: that females can solicit this male behavior. Read the article: doi.wiley.com

International Wolf Center- 1 July 2011- Ethology Course
We had a great Ethology course this past week, and the staff at the Center learned some great new techniques for managing anxiety, thanks to some tremendous resources among our program participants. This video features footage taken by program participants as we did some sound conditioning to stimulate the wolves. You will see the wolves initially nervous about sound and movement over their heads, but later in the week, with the use of some Dog Appeasing Pheromone spray, we had some very relaxed social interaction. All wolves received a mid-week treat of deer legs as part of the Enrichment program. Enjoy and have a safe 4th of July weekend.

European Conference on Artificial Life 10 Chemo-ethology of an Adaptive Protocell
A video of a computational model of an autopoiesis based behavior. The simulated protocell is sensitive not directly to environmental phenomena but rather to the effect of the environmental phenomena on an aspect of its autopoiesis (self-construction). It requires either both the red & blue resource to produce its constituents, or only the green. A coupling between the production of its components and its mechanism of motion causes it to move toward whatever area maximises its self production. In this run, this behavior is initially an oscillating motion between the sources of red and blue resource before a transition to the green resource and then a return to the red & blue resources after they have grown in the absence of the agent. Egbert, M., Di Paolo, EA and Barandiaran, X. (2009) Chemo-ethology of an Adaptive Protocell: Sensorless sensitivity to implicit viability conditions in Proceedings of the Tenth European Conference on Artificial Life, ECAL09, Budapest, September 13-16, 2009, Springer Verlag.

Ethology of Emotional Empathy (EEE) - Etologia Relazionale©
The Ethology of Emotions and Empathy, today. Ethology of Emotional Empathy goes even further and calls upon human beings to find a balance between soul and reason, a necessary agreement through which human beings can be really able to make changes in their life, especially in relational life, also improving a new radical awareness in the present. Everyone has the possibility to make a choice. To be free to choose, however, it is necessary to proceed without restrictions and mental boxes of any kind. Ethology of Emotional Empathy starts again from an "apparent" simplicity of animals but asking the human being to move towards its authenticity. In Ethology of Emotional Empathy all animals have equal opportunities and relational potentiality. Loving diversity and preserve it, recognizing its immense value, is the Key of biocentric approach, the key to feeling part of the biodiversity. The Ethology of Emotional Empathy is a world that feeds on listening, knowledge, empathy, observation and admiration of such behaviors so different and extraordinary of another living being who become important in view of the curiosity and communication without barriers, and without preconceived models or protocols to follow. The heart of Ethology of Emotional Empathy is undoubtedly the view of empathy. Contamination with other living beings allows us to perceive intense emotions, rediscovering the potential of our extended mind now dormant and to reconnect with the planet and its natural ...
