Since the poll's inception, critics have been invited to award their ten albums a total of 100 points, with each album receiving a maximum of 30 points and a minimum of 5. Lists submitted without points are given 10 points per album by the poll's editors. Singles lists have always been unweighted.
Through the years, other lists have been elicited from poll respondents, including local bands (early 80s), EPs ('80s), videos (much of the 80s), reissues (late 80s-early 90s) and compilations (mid-90s). As of the late 90s, the poll again consists of only albums and singles.Music critic Robert Christgau was in charge of the poll for 33 years, and wrote an essay every year that accompanied and framed the list. Christgau was dismissed from the ''Village Voice'' in August 2006, but the paper has continued the feature. Christgau continues to submit his Top Ten list and to encourage other eligible critics to do so.
The poll was jokingly given the spoonerism name "Pazz & Jop" rather than the more obvious "Jazz & Pop" because, inevitably, some detractor will claim that a nominated work is ineligible or undeserving on the grounds that it is not "really" jazz or pop. Since there are no formal definitions for the made-up terms "pazz" and "jop", voters will concentrate on the actual merits of a work rather than arguing over whether it fits into this or that genre.

Isidro Chávez Espinoza (Angostura, Sinaloa, Mexico, October 29, 1981) and best known as Espinoza Paz, is a Mexican musician and composer of Mexican Regional music. He is now a banda and norteña music composer in Mexico.
Soon Paz was penning songs for a long list of regional Regional artists, including Sergio Vega, La Arrolladora Banda el Limón, Banda Cuisillos, Julio Chaidez, Banda de Jerez, Jenni Rivera, Chuy Lizarraga, Adair Elizalde, El Potro de Sinaloa, El Chapo de Sinaloa, and Duelo, among numerous others. That same year Paz embarked on a recording career of his own, releasing his full-length solo album debut, Paz en Tu Corazón, in association with Nueva Generacion Music Group. Another independently released album, Amigo con Derechos (2008), followed before Paz was offered a recording contract with the major label Universal Latino, which released the album ''El Canta Autor del Pueblo'' (2008) on its Machete Music subsidiary. Featuring previously released favorites such as "El Celular" and "Amigo con Derechos," ''El Canta Autor del Pueblo'' spawned the hit single "El Proximo Viernes," which broke into the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart. Later in 2008 the album ''Mis Exitos con Tololoche'' was released by Disa.
Isidro Bandas name was created because of his last name (Espinoza) and his mothers first name (Paz). The reason why he had created this name is because of a dedication to his mother, who had always worked hard. His family was very poor, and Isidro had always wanted to give his mother everything. So when Isidro's mother had died, that was the time when he had already became rich. His farther on the other hand, Isidro tried a few times to give money to his father, but Isidro's father refuses to accept the money ( This could be because the father had worked his whole life hard, and always worked for his money).

After his very classical training, he discovered Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley, tuning into American radio stations – rock being banned on government radio stations at that time.
Raul Paz left Cuba in 1996, went to South America and then wound up in Paris to study at the Schola Cantorum. In the mid-90's Paris was a melting pot for music. Raul hung out on the Latino scene, playing in the clubs New Morning, Hot Brass and Bataclan. He became one of the pioneers of the new Cuban wave.
He was then spotted by Ralph Mercado, founder of the RMM label, and recorded his first album, Cuba Libre, in Gloria Estefan's studio in Miami. Renamed Imaginate for the American market, the record was a hit, selling some 100,000 copies and earning him the accolade "Best new male artist" in the US music press.
After having played live in the US, Raul Paz returned to Paris and settled down. He took an apartment close to Place Du Colonel Fabien in the 20th district, and signed with Patrick Zelnik's label Naïve. The first fruit of this relationship was Mulata in 2003.
Raul Paz reinterpreted Cuban music, weaving in hip-hop beats, dub, rock riffs and a groove all of his own. Mulata sold 60,000 copies. Revolución takes up where Mulata left off. Raul Paz recorded the new album in Havana, last November, at the Egrem studios, where the albums of the famous Buena Vista Social Club were cut.
In 2005, Alfredo Arias gave Raul Paz a leading part in Mambo Mystico, his last musical at the Théâtre national de Chaillot.
In 2007, Raul Paz recorded the album called En Vivo on the label Naïve.
In 2010, Raul Paz recorded the album called Havanization on the label Naïve.
