RUSSIAN OIL RIG #FAIL IN ARCTIC FROM GAZPROM.. WTF?!
Massive safety fails and WTF?! moments on Russian Arctic oil rig. http://www.savethearctic.org Music: Нефть (Oil) by DJ Smash & Vengerov & Bobina feat. Matua & Averin & Kravets : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EucLgHzuZaw Russian energy giant, Gazprom, claims it can safely produce oil from its Prirazlomnaya platform in the frozen Arctic ocean. They told the Moscow Times that "Last winter demonstrated the platform['s] safety and reliability in the Arctic environment" This footage was shot in the Arctic. It proves that they're using a Soviet relic which can't withstand the fierce conditions in the remote Pechora Sea. The video shows a direct strike from a support vessel and the collapse of a vital emergency ladder. Shell just signed a deal with Gazprom to drill for oil in the Russian Arctic, one of the most fragile environments on earth. http://www.savethearctic.org Source material available from Greenpeace UK- published: 13 Sep 2013

'Greenpeace Ship Boarded By Russian Coast Guard, Activists Rounded Up And Held At Gunpoint'
Two Canadian activists are among a group of 25 people who were being held at gunpoint aboard a Greenpeace ship, the environmental group said Thursday. Arctic Campaign Co-ordinator Christy Ferguson said Paul Ruzycki of Port Colborne, Ont., and a man from Montreal whose name was not released were arrested when Russian Coast Guard officers boarded their vessel, which Greenpeace says was in international waters. Ferguson said at least 15 members of the Coast Guard used helicopters and ropes to rappel on board the Arctic Sunrise, a Greenpeace ship carrying a crew bent on protesting offshore oil drilling in the Arctic. The crew were being held in the ship's mess, she said, adding no injuries have been reported. The incident took place Thursday as the ship was circling an oil platform in the Pechora Sea, an arm of the Barents Sea. The platform was owned by Gazprom, a Russian oil company. Russia's Interfax news agency reported that the vessel was to be brought to the northern port of Murmansk following the search. Interfax also quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying the crew of the vessel took "provocative" actions and posed a threat to human life and the environment in the Arctic region. "The note of protest that was given to the Dutch ambassador describes the actions of the crew of the Dutch-flagged vessel as provocative and says that they posed a threat to human life and the risk of an environmental catastrophe in the Arctic with unpredictable consequences," it said. Ferguson decried the incident, saying Russian authorities had no jurisdiction over a ship that was sailing in international waters and no need to resort to threatening tactics "This was a peaceful protest against reckless industrial activity in the Arctic," Ferguson said in a telephone interview from Toronto. "Russian authorities have responded with extreme aggression and force. They've pointed guns at people, they've pointed knives at people. They're arresting people and holding them without information in international waters." Ferguson said Ruzycki, who was serving as the chief mate aboard the ship, is a veteran crusader who is no stranger to confrontations. "He's been sailing with Greenpeace for about 25 years, and he's been in a lot of tense situations and is really committed to this kind of work," she said. Ruzycki's sister, Patti Ruzycki-Stirling, said news of her brother's detention came as a shock. All was well during their last email correspondence early Thursday morning, she said, adding subsequent events have left the entire family very concerned. "I got a little sick to my stomach thinking, 'this has taken a turn I don't even want to think about," she said. Ferguson said tensions have been flaring between the two parties for some time. While on board the ship two weeks ago, Ferguson said she negotiated with Coast Guard officials who were threatening to fire on the Arctic Sunrise if they persisted in their protests. Earlier this week, Russian officials detained two crew members who were attempting to climb onto an oil platform. Those crew members were held on a Russian ship before being returned to the Arctic Sunrise, she said. The campaigners' ship was taken to Murmansk after Russian coastguard officers boarded it and detained the 30 crew members. Greenpeace sent its ship the Arctic Sunrise to the platform in the Pechora Sea, 60 kilometres from Russia's northern coast. Two activists, thought to be Finnish and Swiss nationals, tried to scale it. The Russian Foreign Ministry initially described their action as aggressive and provocative. Greenpeace argues that seismic tests are dangerous for animals such as whales and dolphins. The environmentalists denounced the Russian response as heavy-handed, accusing special forces of pointing guns at them and slashing their rubber dinghies. The authorities say the activists will be prosecuted regardless of nationality. Piracy carries a potential 15-year jail term in Russia. Russia: Arctic 30 activists free to leave the country
More than 20 Greenpeace activists involved in the 'Arctic 30' case were granted an exit visa on Thursday after criminal charges against them have been formally dropped on Christmas Day. The activists are now free to leave the country. Among those who got the exit visa were Phil Ball, Alexandra Harris, Kieron Bryan and Iain Rogers from UK, Sini Saarela from Finland, Marco Weber from Switzzerland, Dima Litvinov from Sweden, Mannes Ubels from the Netherlands and Gizem Akhan from Turkey. The activists were released on bail in November after being behind bars for over two months. The Greenpeace activists were initially charged with piracy and later on with hooliganism after climbing onto a Gazprom's oil rig in Pechora Sea to protest against Arctic drilling in September. The action followed an amnesty passed on December 18 by the Russian parliament to mark the 20th anniversary of the Russian Constitution, which included two members of the punk band Pussy Riot. Former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky was also released with a presidential pardon.- published: 26 Dec 2013

Greenpeace Ship Stormed By Russian Guards (Raw Video)
An activist tweets about the "terrifying" raid, which happened the day after campaigners were arrested for boarding an oil rig. Armed Russian coastguard officers have boarded a Greenpeace ship sailing in Arctic waters and held the 25 crew members, including six Britons, at gunpoint. The environmental group was circling Russian oil company Gazprom's Prirazlomnaya oil platform in the Pechora Sea to protest drilling in the region. On Thursday, armed officers rappelled onto the Arctic Sunrise vessel from a helicopter and arrested the 25 protesters on board. A Greenpeace activist tweeted during the raid: "This is pretty terrifying. Loud banging. Screaming in Russian. They're still trying to kick in the door." Another tweeted: "Latest from the deck: Crew are sitting on their knees on the helipad with guns pointed at them." Greenpeace claims the Arctic Sunrise was boarded illegally as the vessel was inside Russia's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), in which foreign vessels should be free to navigate. The Russian Foreign Ministry accused the activists of "aggressive and provocative" behaviour that risked lives and could lead to an "environmental catastrophe". "The intruders' actions were of aggressive and provocative character and had the outward signs of extremist activity that can lead to people's deaths and other grave consequences," it said. Two Greenpeace activists were arrested by the coastguard on Wednesday after boarding the Gazprom oil rig. The Russian coastguard also reportedly fired warning shots across the bow of the ship. The Prirazlomnaya oil platform is due to begin extraction by the end of the year. Russia's economy is largely dependent on income generated from the country's oil and gas industry. Oil giants ExxonMobil, Eni and Statoil, along with other Norwegian firms, plan to drill for oil in Russia's Arctic waters in the coming months. But Greenpeace has warned an oil spill would cause significant environmental damage and warns of fossil fuel extraction contributing to climate change. Around 13% of the world's undiscovered oil reserves are believed to be beneath the Arctic Ocean.- published: 20 Sep 2013

Arctic 30: British Activist Released On Bail
Alexandra Harris speaks of her delight at being granted bail in St Petersburg after being held over an oil-drilling protest. Briton Alexandra Harris has been freed on bail after she was arrested over attempts by Greenpeace to occupy the Prirazlomnaya oil platform in the Pechora Sea. As she heard the news Ms Harris skipped for joy and said: "This has been the hardest experience of my life. I'm really happy. It's not over yet but there's light at the end of the tunnel. "It's nice that the Russian's made the right decision. I love my parents and look forward to speaking to them soon". As she was earlier led into the courtroom by police, Ms Harris had told supporters she felt "trapped inside a political game". Speaking from a metal cage in the courtroom she told Sky's Katie Stallard: "I will not dishonour Greenpeace or my country by trying to flee Russia or the investigation." Ms Harris said she was nervous and that the past two months had been "horrible". "When I talk about the last two months it's hard not to get emotional," she said. "The conditions (in prison) at first were awful and the food was disgusting. "The conditions are better now but it's still prison, I'm still trapped, I can't speak to anyone, (I'm) cut off from the world; it's no better". Two other Britons - Greenpeace activist Anthony Perrett and video-journalist Kieron Byron - will have similar applications for bail heard by the court later today.- published: 20 Nov 2013
