Coney Island Lough Neagh Northern Ireland
A visit to Coney Island on 15th August, 2010. Coney Island has 8 acres of land on which has been 8 civilisations over 8000 years.Coney Island is the only inhabited island on Lough Neagh. Archaeologists have carried out many excavations on the island and have found evidence of continual human occupation since Mesolithic times - approximately 8500 years ago. The island is presently 8 acres in size, but it is still easy to see the old shoreline which existed before the lough was lowered. The main features on the island are :- St. Patrick's Stone This is traditionally the spot where St. Patrick rested when he visited the island in the 5th century. He supposedly walked to the island by using a ford called St. Patrick's Road which stretched from the mainland. The ford was removed during the last century to help barge navigation on the lough. Anglo-Norman Motte This was built as a defensive stronghold during the 13th century and is one of the most westerly Anglo-Norman outposts in Ulster. During the 16th and 17th centuries Coney Island was used as a penal colony and condemned prisoners were supposedly beheaded on this mound. Coney Cottage - The cottage was built in 1895 as a summer retreat for Lord Charlemont. recently renovated, it is now the private home of the island's warden. The ruins behind the island are thought to have been the servant's quarters. The Island's Wildlife - The island boasts a rich variety of wildlife both native and introduced. There is a good variety of ...

TRIM CASTLE - COUNTY MEATH - IRELAND
Went to see the Trim Castle today in County Meath Ireland. It was a clear and sunny day. Enjoy the walk through! =^) en.wikipedia.org Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, was constructed over a thirty-year period by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter. Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by King Henry II in 1172 in an attempt to curb the expansionist policies of Richard de Clare, (Strongbow). Construction of the massive three storied Keep, the central stronghold of the castle, was begun c. 1176 on the site of an earlier wooden fortress. This massive twenty-sided tower, which is cruciform in shape, was protected by a ditch, curtain wall and moat. Horse Outside
NUMBER 1 SCHOOL TOUR ATTRACTION KING JOHN'S CASTLE 2012 is the 800th Birthday of King John's Castle in Limerick!! Not only were there medieval horses outside King John's Castle back in 1212, they were inside too. The walls, towers and fortifications remain today, and are a visitor attraction. The remains of a Viking settlement were uncovered during the construction of a visitor centre at the site. The Viking sea-king, Thormodr Helgason, built the first permanent Viking stronghold on Inis Sibhtonn (King's Island) in 922. He used the base to raid the length of the River Shannon from Lough Derg to Lough Ree, pillaging ecclesiastical settlements. In 937 the Limerick Vikings clashed with those of Dublin on Lough Ree and were defeated. In 943 they were defeated again when the chief of the local Dalcassian clan joined with Ceallachán, king of Munster and the Limerick Vikings were forced to pay tribute to the clans. The power of the Vikings never recovered, and they reduced to the level of a minor clan, however often playing pivotal parts in the endless power struggles of the next few centuries. The arrival of the Anglo-Normans to the area in 1172 changed everything. Domhnall Mór Ó Briain burned the city to the ground in 1174 in a bid to keep it from the hands of the new invaders. After he died in 1194, the Anglo-Normans finally captured the area in 1195, under John, Lord of Ireland. In 1197 local legend claims Limerick was given its first charter and its first Mayor, Adam ...

Travel Spain - Visiting the Walled Town of Cuenca
Take a tour of Walled Town of Cuenca in Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats. The ancient walled city of Cuenca is perched upon the rocks above two deep gorges. This excellent defensive position was recognized by the invading Moors, who built the city after 714. The city traded hands between the Spanish Christians and the Moors several times until 1177. Now the city is famous for awesome structures such as the Hanging Houses of Cuenca. The city also contains a castle, a convent, the Mangana Tower, and many churches. The most famous of these is the Cuenca Cathedral, built in the Anglo-Norman style. The view alone from St. Paul's Bridge at night is worth a trip to Cuenca.

Amber & Adam | Love Story + Wedding Film | Ashford Castle, Ireland
www.t2production.com
We recently traveled to Cong, County Mayo, Ireland with Pink Posh Photography for a very intimate wedding ceremony. From the day they met, Amber and Adam's story is truly a fairly tale. Getting married in this almost thousands years old Ashford Castle really caps off their story. Amber and Adam are both from Texas, and they had a reception last week in Dallas. This love story and wedding film was shown during their reception.
A little history behind the Ashford Castle - "The castle was built in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family following their defeat of the O'Connors, the Royal House of Connacht. After more than three and a half centuries under the de Burgos, Ashford passed into the hands of a new master, following a fierce battle between the forces of the de Burgo's and those of the English official Sir Richard Bingham, Lord President of Connaught. In 1589, the castle fell to Bingham, who added a fortified enclave within its precincts. In 1715, the estate of Ashford was established by the Browne Family (Baron Oranmore), and a lodge in the style of a 17th-century French chateau was added to the medieval splendour of the castle. The Estate was purchased in 1852 by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness, who extended the estate to 26,000 acres, built new roads, planted thousands of trees and added two large Victorian style extensions.
Ashford Castle has been named one of the best hotels in Ireland and also one of the top 50 resort properties in Europe."

The Normans.wmv
Their quick adaptability expressed itself in the shrewd Norman willingness to take on local men of talent, to marry the high-born local women; confidently illiterate Norman masters used the literate clerks of the church for their own purposes. Siege of a motte-and-bailey castle from the Bayeux Tapestry. The Normans were in contact with England from an early date. Not only were their original Viking brethren still ravaging the English coasts, they occupied most of the important ports opposite England across the Channel. This relationship eventually produced closer ties of blood through the marriage of Emma, sister of Duke Richard II of Normandy, and King Ethelred II of England. Because of this, Ethelred fled to Normandy in 1013, when he was forced from his kingdom by Sweyn Forkbeard. His stay in Normandy (until 1016) influenced him and his sons by Emma, who stayed in Normandy after Canute the Great's conquest of the isle. When finally Edward the Confessor returned from his father's refuge in 1041, at the invitation of his half-brother Harthacanute, he brought with him a Norman-educated mind. He also brought many Norman counsellors and fighters, some of whom established an English cavalry force. This concept never really took root, but it is a typical example of the attitudes of Edward. He appointed Robert of Jumièges archbishop of Canterbury and made Ralph the Timid earl of Hereford. He invited his brother-in-law Eustace II of Boulogne to his court in 1051, an event which ...
