www.euronews.com NATO has confirmed that a US police adviser has been shot dead by an Afghan policewoman in the Kabul compound of the chief of police. The death is the latest "insider attack" in which Afghan forces turn their weapons on Western troops they are supposed to be working with. At least 52 NATO soldiers have been killed this year in similar incidents. But this appears to be the first time a female officer has turned her weapon on a member of the international coalition. The shootings have undermined the training of Afghan troops and impeded the smooth handover of security operations ahead of the pullout by most NATO combat troops in 2014. www.euronews.com There is not much left that is recognisable after a bakery has been obliterated a missile. This was the case at Halfaya in Hama in central Syria. The area was seized by rebel forces last week. Activists say the province is being pounded by the government air force in retaliation. Food shortages mean around 1000 people were queuing for bread when it is said a government missile hit the building. At least 60 people have been killed. Given the numbers wounded, that death toll is likely to rise. A force of 200 rebels, meanwhile, has seized a military base in the north of the country. They seized a cache of weapons including two field guns, three anti-aircraft guns and dozens of Kalashnikov assault rifles. Amid the ongoing carnage, the UN-backed crisis mediator Lakhdar Brahimi has arrived for more talks. He is expected to meet President Bashar al-Assad later on Monday. Western powers and some Arab countries have repeatedly demanded that Assad step down. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com

Mali's Islamist backlash over UN military approval
Mali's Islamist backlash over UN military approval

www.euronews.com In northern Mali, Islamist extremists have reacted violently to UN plans to send military forces to regain control of the region. They have restarted a campaign of destroying the numerous historic mausoleums of Muslim saints which are highly regarded by many in the region. The attackers say the veneration of saints is tantamount to idolatry. Religious extremist groups and secular rebel fighters took advantage of a coup in March, and took control of the vast northern part of the country. On Friday in Algiers, two groups signed a deal to find a solution through dialogue. One of them, The Defenders of Islam, expressed confidence that a political solution could be found. But just three days after the UN Security Council approved the deployment of an African-led force to reclaim the north, the Islamists appear more determined than ever to establish sharia law. One group claim to have cut off the hands of two suspected thieves, and said there is more treatment like that to come. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter twitter.com
