Das größte Baum der Welt
Der General Sherman Tree ist der größte lebende Baum der Erde. Er ist ein Berg- oder Riesenmammutbaum (Sequoiadendron giganteum) und steht im Giant Forest des Sequoia-Nationalparks im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien. Sein Alter wird auf etwa 1900 bis 2500 Jahre geschätzt. Ausmaße: Der General Sherman Tree ist mit einer Stammhöhe von "nur" 83,8 m nicht der höchste Baum der Erde, das ist mit einer Stammhöhe von 115,55 m der Küstenmammutbaum (Sequoia sempervirens) Hyperion im Redwood-Nationalpark. Auch Douglasien (Pseudotsuga menziesii), Sitka-Fichten (Picea sitchensis) und Riesen-Eukalyptuse (Eucalyptus regnans) können mitunter deutlich höher werden. Es ist auch nicht der dickste Baum, das ist der Árbol del Tule, eine mexikanische Sumpfzypresse, der aber niedriger ist. Die charakteristische Eigenschaft des General Sherman Tree, der einen Brusthöhendurchmesser von 825 Zentimetern besitzt ist, dass er auch im weiteren Stammverlauf hohe Durchmesser beibehält. Eine Bestimmung des Volumens dieses massiven Baumes ergab im Jahr 1975 einen Wert von 1486,6 Kubikmetern, eine neuere Bestimmung sogar 1489 Kubikmeter. Damit handelt es sich um den voluminösesten lebenden Baum und die größte Pflanze der Erde. Zuweilen wird er gar als „größtes Lebewesen der Erde" (Largest Living Thing on Earth) bezeichnet, dies ist aber nicht korrekt, denn das ist ein Pilz der Art Armillaria ostoyae im Malheur National Forest, Oregon mit einer Ausdehnung von ungefähr 965 ha. Anfang 2006 verlor der Baum während eines Wintersturmes einen großen Ast, der beim Herabstürzen Teile der Absperrungen um den Baum zerstörte und einen Krater in die angelegten Fußwege riss.
