The bodies of six aid workers, said by Afghan officials to have been kidnapped, then shot and killed by insurgents, were surrounded by grieving relatives on Tuesday, as they were brought to Herat regional hospital.
The bodies were found earlier in the day in the Gulran district of western Herat province.
Mohammad Rafiq Shirzai of the Herat Health Department said six International Rescue Committee (IRC) workers had been working at Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation projects in Gulran district when they were kidnapped by an "anti-government group".
"Unfortunately they were killed yesterday at the scene of the abduction and their bodies have been moved to the Herat regional hospital," he said.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation said the six were kidnapped on Sunday by the Taliban and killed after negotiations for their release failed.
Five of them worked for an international non-governmental organisation and one worked for the ministry he said, a slight discrepancy from the statement by Shirzai which said all the killed worked for NGO the IRC.
The ministry runs programmes that seek to improve the lives of Afghans from remote regions.

Police in western Afghanistan said on Monday that a German citizen had been kidnapped.
General Juma Khan Adeel, Herat's provincial police chief, said the German national had been on his way to his relatives' house when he was taken.
"He was abducted yesterday in Totachi village in the Gulran district by unknown gunmen while he was going to his father-in-law's house," Adeel told AP Television.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry in Berlin said the ministry was aware of the reported abduction and was checking it.
The head of Green Helmets, a German-based aid organisation, had received a report that one of its former workers, Harald Kleber, had been abducted.
Adeel said the apparent kidnapping likely stemmed from a family dispute and had not been carried out by Taliban or other militants.
Adeel said he thought it was a personal dispute because of the history of his wife, whose first husband was her cousin and it was not known if she had been officially divorced.
Adeel said the woman and the couple's child were in the car when gunmen stopped it on Sunday, but that the wife and child were not taken captive.
