Trend in gross world product to 2050 and what it implies for world average economic lifestyle
Excerpt from a talk I gave at OWPP/Cannon Design, Chicago, Environmental Awareness Week, October 2010. A projection of gross world product to year 2050 "leads to a world in which its average citizen has a per capita gross domestic product approximately equal to that of the average person in Japan or in the European Union today." (quote from my book, CO2 Rising, The MIT Press, page 126). The graph shown is figure 7.2, with data to year 2009. -- Tyler Volk, Professor of Biology and Science Director of Environmental Studies, New York University.

Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that nurtured the development of civilization. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science. Agriculture generally speaking refers to human activities, although it is also observed in certain species of ant and termite. The word agriculture is the English adaptation of Latin agricultūra, from ager, "a field", and cultūra, "cultivation" in the strict sense of "tillage of the soil". Thus, a literal reading of the word yields "tillage of fields". The history of agriculture dates back thousands of years, and its development has been driven and defined by greatly different climates, cultures, and technologies. However, all farming generally relies on techniques to expand and maintain the lands that are suitable for raising domesticated ...

we are the world (we are the children)
* Half the world — nearly three billion people — live on less than two dollars a day. * The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the 41 Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (567 million people) is less than the wealth of the world's 7 richest people combined. * Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names. * Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn't happen. * 1 billion children live in poverty (1 in 2 children in the world). 640 million live without adequate shelter, 400 million have no access to safe water, 270 million have no access to health services. 10.6 million died in 2003 before they reached the age of 5 (or roughly 29000 children per day).

Happiness Concept - Bhutan's Gross National Happiness vs. GDP
How to Achieve Happiness? Making Sense of Bhutan's Gross National Happiness - as part of the news and politics series by GeoBeats. For much of the world, individual prosperity and happiness are tied to the economic progress of a country and a key economic indicator used by various governments is the GDP or gross domestic product. This paradigm essentially implies that more we produce, happier we will be. The small country of Bhutan has challenged that notion by using Gross National Happiness or GNH as a key indicator for its progress vs. the commonly used Gross Domestic Product. Located between the two Asian powerhouses - China and India, Bhutan has a tremendously rich culture as well as immense natural beauty. In 1972, the King of Bhutan at that time came up with the term "gross national happiness" as a guiding principle for country's future progress. More recently, at a Columbia University event in 2010, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Prime Minister Thinley described GNH : While some argue such ideas are hard to implement at a practical level, Bhutan seems to incorporate them into every fabric of its society. New York Times noted in a 2009 article on Bhutan that "Under a new Constitution adopted last year, government programs — from agriculture to transportation to foreign trade — must be judged not by the economic benefits they may offer but by the happiness they produce." Even Bhutan's tourism video emphasizes the notion of happiness: The rest of the world seems to be ...

FCC Economic Spotlight: Fall 2011
FCC Senior Economist JP Gervais takes a look at current global economic trends and how they impact Canadian agriculture. Key Points • Gross domestic product (GDP) measures the value of goods and services produced in the economy. A country's increase in GDP generally implies an increase in income -- one of the major drivers of food demand. • Inflation seems to be slowing due to the uncertainty in the economy. It's likely that the Bank of Canada will wait until late 2012 before raising interest rates and the US Federal Reserve may maintain record-low interest rates until mid-2013. • Long-term, we can expect a dollar slightly above parity if the growth in emerging markets driving demand for our commodities continues. • Uncertainty in the world economy and tight supply prospects for many agricultural commodities imply a volatile environment for businesses, but long-term prospects are still positive • While US recovery is slow, forecast for growth in emerging countries should translate into continued demand for Canadian agricultural products.

Chossudovsky: China could already be world's largest economy
It's widely predicted that China's economy will be the largest in the world by 2020, overtaking the US Only this week the country surpassed Japan to become the world's second biggest economy by GDP. And earlier this year it officially overtook Germany to become the biggest exporter. However, Michel Chossudovsky from the centre for research of globalisation in Canada says China's economy could ALREADY be the biggest in the world, as GDP is not representative of the actual strength of an economy.

Who Rules the World?
The world has become smaller and multinational corporations have grown larger. The financial industry has access to capital far greater than the GDP of many individual nations. So who really holds the power? Are we sacrificing power for wealth?
