XLR8R TV Ep. 136: Tune In An Afternoon: Nite Jewel + Dam-Funk
Be sure to download their song, "Am I Gonna Make It" at xlr8r.com/nitefunk
A few weeks back when we were sitting around fantasizing who in Los Angeles we'd want to collaborate for our recurring series, Tune in an Afternoon, we pretty quickly came up with Dam-Funk and Nite Jewel. When we contacted them, it turned out they were fans of each other and had been looking for an excuse to collaborate. It was decided that Nite Jewel would produce and that their favorite store, LA's Future Music, would serve as the afternoon's launching pad. From there, things just got creepy.

XLR8R TV Episode 2: Carl Craig
We set Detroit techno legend Carl Craig loose in San Francisco's favorite weird music destination, Aquarius Records. Known less for their techno and more for their collections of Scandinavian death metal, Bhangra Black Sabbath, and recordings of glaciers cracking, Aquarius is a playground for the musically refined. Watch as Carl listens to, and waxes poetic on, everything from 8- bit metal core to pygmy chanting to Bloc Party.

XLR8R TV Ep. 70: Eliot Lipp Sometimes Goes Outside
Brooklyn-based electro-hip-hop specialist Eliot Lipp has lots of reasons to stay inside: his amazing collection of analog gear, for one. In this episode, we pry him out of his studio and get him to talk about his new album, The Outside, as well as indulge in some bottom-of-the-barrel crate-digging and ice cream—but not without a good, old-fashioned in-studio synth nerd-out first.

XLR8R TV Episode 83: Glitch Mob Street Warfare
The Glitch Mob is notorious for its live shows— they remix on the fly and seamlessly finish each others' basslines. Here, the crew takes it up a notch by setting up speakers and a generator renegade-style in the crowded streets of San Francisco for full-scale guerilla beat warfare on the public. What they weren't expecting was that San Franciscans prove themselves up to the attack—in a way that only San Franciscans can.

XLR8R TV Episode 144: Runaway: Fun is the Key Word
Together, DJs Marcos Cabral and Jacques Renault are Runaway, a Brooklyn-based production team, as well as the founders of disco/house imprint On the Prowl. We caught up with them on Renault's roof in Williamsburg to talk about the art of one-upsmanship, disco edits, and '90s New York rave culture. Also, Renault gives us the dirt on his name.

XLR8R TV Ep. 73: Hercules, Love Affair & Being a Dork
In seemingly a matter of months, Andy Butler went from being a bedroom disco-house producer to leading Hercules & Love Affair, an eight-piece band featuring three vocalists (Antony Hegarty, Nomi Ruiz, and Kim Ann Foxman) a two-man horn section, and Shayne Oliver, a legendary dancer in the New York voguing scene. Here, Butler talks about his path from being a teenage fanboy DJing in Denver gay bars to his current role as a rising New York art disco superstar.

XLR8R TV Episode 140: Tune in an Afternoon: Javelin
The resourceful Brooklyn duo makes a song from warped rip-off-artist cassettes.
Asking Javelin to do one of our Tune in an Afternoon episodes was a no-brainer. Cousins Tom Van Buskirk and George Langford are natural improvisers prone to mashing together found sounds on barely working boomboxes and magically turning them into timewarp dance hits that get stuck in your head for days. Here, we challenged Tom and George to make something catchy using only gear they had on tour and a handful of thrift-store cassettes. Download the result, "Me Thing Drawing Me" at xlr8r.com/javelin.

XLR8R TV Episode 7: Beth Ditto & Yo Majesty
We asked Beth Ditto, the fearless leader of The Gossip, to perform a daunting task for her first turn as interviewer: get to know the force of nature that is Yo Majesty. Tampa, Florida's fiercest female rap trio blew the roof off 2007's South by Southwest festival with a performance that was in-your-face, topless at times and with brazen rhymes about "krypotonite pussy." This was Beth's first time meeting Yo Maj, but after battling for mic time and bonding over "saggy titties and stretchmarks," it was love. In fact, Beth was paparazzi'd the night after this interview wearing a Yo Maj shirt and hanging out with Kate Moss. Yo Maj 4 life!

XLR8R TV Episode 147 - Denver City Guide
While producer/label manager Alex B (né Botwin) might often get lumped in with Low End Theory's abstract beat cats of Los Angeles, he's a Colorado boy through and through. In this episode of XLR8R TV, he takes us for a trip through the kissing-cousin locales of Denver and Boulder to show us the region's vegetarian delights, its vinyl havens, and its other unique wonders (Mexican-restaurant jazz clubs, anyone?).

XLR8R TV Ep. 91: Sebastien Telliers All
Sebastien Tellier makes not giving a shit incredibly sexy. This year, he cemented himself as Forever Awesome by driving a golf cart and sucking helium onstage as France's entry in the hilariously self-important Eurovision Song Contest. With his newest album, Sexuality, Tellier has effectively evolved into a modern sex guru. Here, he shares his sexual wisdom with us during a few stolen moments on a bearskin rug in front of a fireplace.

XLR8R TV Episode 138: Claude VonStroke is a Dirtybird
Producer and label founder Barclay Crenshaw (a.k.a. Claude VonStroke) takes a ride though Dirtybird history. San Francisco house and techno label Dirtybird is a tightknit crew known for striking the bumpin' balance between goofy and grimy. Here, we get the key players—Claude VonStroke, Worthy, Justin Martin, and Christian Martin—talking about the history of the label, their infamous Golden Gate Park parties, and how the Dirtybird sound evolved. As an extra bonus, we get a highly subjective tour of San Francisco in a sweet rented convertible. Everyone wins!
