The Discovery of the Atomic Nucleus (3 of 15)
Episode 3 of In Search of Giants: Dr Brian Cox takes us on a journey through the history of particle physics. In this episode we learn how Ernest Rutherford conducted a historical experiment that revealed that most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in a tiny nucleus made of protons and neutrons. This film is part of a series originally broadcast on Teachers' TV (www.teachers.tv The series was made with the support of The Science and Technology Facilities Council (www.scitech.ac.uk). www.lhc.ac.uk - Official UK LHC website for public and schools. www.particledetectives.net - School resources on the LHC, how science works and particle physics. Films produced and directed by Alom Shaha (www.labreporter.com).

Rutherford's Experiment: Nuclear Atom
Rutherford's Nuclear Atom Experiment In 1910, Rutherford and his coworkers were studying the angles at which alpha particles were scattered as they passed through a thin gold foil. Most particles passed through undeflected, though a few were found to be scattered at large, some even in the direction they had come. This meant they had collided with an object much more massive than the particle itself, but so small that only a few aplha particles encountered them. Showing that the atom was composed of a small dense massive center surrounded by low mass electrons. Video from: www.chemtopics.com

Rutherford Gold Foil Experiment - Backstage Science
Ernest Rutherford's famous gold foil experiment involves the scattering of alpha particles as they pass through a thin gold foil. It led to a better understanding of the structure of atoms. It's also known as the Geiger--Marsden experiment, after Hans Geiger and Ernest Marsden who performed it under Rutherford's supervision. Particle physicist Bruce Kennedy explains wit this modern re-creation.

Ruther's Alpha Scattering Experiment2
Check us out at www.tutorvista.com Rutheford made a theoretical analysis of angles of scattering in accordance with Thomson's theory of atom and in accordance with his own theory. He assumed that atom consisted of positive charged nucleus and negative charged electrons circling around the nucleus. Then his theoretic calculations he compared with the experiment result. Alpha particles going through atom created in accordance with the "plum cake" model wouldn't be strong abberated because the electric field in that atom wouldn't be strong. In the model created by Rutheford the field is much stronger near to the nucleus, so some of alpha particles are much more abberated. The other going in the far distance to the nucleus are almost not at all abberated. The probability that any alpha particle will hit the nucleus is small but there is such a chance. The experiment showed that there are some not much abberated alpha particles but also some abberated of a very big angle (135-150 degree). That occurrence couldn't be explained by some small, added aberrations. Experimental data proved the "planetary" model of atom.

The nucleus of atoms was discovered using radioactivity, which is the spontaneous emissions of particles of radiation fron an atom. Prof. Harman talks about early experiments with radioactivity, the discovery of gamma, alpha, and beta particles and their characteristics. Alpha particles were instrumental in the discovery of the nucleus of atoms. The Rutherford Gold Foil Experiment used alpha particles aimed at gold foil. The vast majority of the particles went through the gold foil, but approximately 1 in every 8000 was deflected at a severe angle. Rutherford hypothesized that this was only possible if the majority of the atom's mass was held in one central location, which he deemed the 'nucleus.' It was detemined that the nucleus of an atom is very small, analogous to one lightbulb, if Las Vegas is an atom. This discovery led to a revision of the ""Plum Pudding"" model of an atom to the ""Planetary"" model ...

Kim Rutherford - Last Say So
Kim Rutherford - "Last Say So" This song often reminds me of the scripture found in Isaiah chapter 54 verse 17 (Isaiah 54:17 KJV) - "and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn." Remember - No matter what naysayers are saying about you, your condition or current state of being, GOD ALWAYS HAS THE VERY LAST SAY SO..... Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
