Scary! Massive waves on huge road bridge send Volgograd drivers asphalt surfing
Motorists using a bridge in the southern Russian city of Volgograd were given the ride of a lifetime by a powerful gust of wind. The new river crossing started shaking violently and a massive downpour at the same time made conditions worse. Drivers say their cars were literally thrown into the air, many thinking it was an unexpected earthquake. The shaking was so severe it caused vehicles to career into the opposite lane creating chaos. Local authorities claim the shaking of the bridge was possibly caused by an earthquake. Seismologists, however, say this is highly unlikely. Meanwhile, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an investigation into the bridge's safety and construction history. The bridge across Volga river is 1260 meters long and 32 meters wide. It was opened less than a year ago in October 2009.

Stalingrad-Volgograd. They do remember.
Volgograd is a beautiful city,it was almost totally destroyed during the battle of Stalingrad (the cities previous name) in 1942/43. The battle lasted for 200days and was one of the turning points of WW2. Mamayev Kurgan and the Panorama museum tell the story of those 200days.From the bottom to the top of the hill are 200steps but if you you are unable to climb the steps there is vehicle access at the rear with a short level walk to the statue of Mother Russia, you can then descend past the statues and lakes of tears to the bottom. It is a very moving experience. The Panorama museum is also worth a visit and has special exhibits such as Vasili Zaitsevs rifle and the sword of Stalingrad. Throughout the city are other places of rememberance and interest. One sad omission is the fountain of children dancing around a crocodile, it was modelled on a poem by Corny Chukovskiy called 'children don't go walking in Africa'. It once stood infront of the railway station but was removed and never replaced when the area was rebuilt......The label of Gen. Gregori Chuikov should read Gen. Vasili Gregorovich Chuikov....Sorry for the wobbles, I think I need a tripod.

Vassili Zaitsev funeral at Volgograd - Stalingrad
In 2006 Vassili Zaitsev's remains were moved from Kiev to Volgograd where he wished to be buried with his fallen friends. Veterans of the Stalingrad battle came from all over Russia and Ukraine to pay their respects to sniper Vassili Zaitsev ,who gave them hope in the Soviet Unions darkest hours. One veteran commented"- I came from Vorenzh to bury Vasya. Captain Vassili Grigorevich Zaitsev (Russian: Василий Григорьевич Зайцев) (March 23, 1915December 15, 1991) was a Soviet sniper during World War II, notable particularly for his activities between October 1942 and and January 1943 during the Battle of Stalingrad. He killed 242 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and other Axis armies, including 11 enemy snipers, but the real number may be much higher, some argue it might have been as many as 500. Prior to November 10, he had already killed 40 Axis soldiers with the standard-issue Mosin-Nagant rifle. His military rank at the time was Junior Lieutenant. Zaitsev was born in Yeleninskoye and grew up in the Ural Mountains. His surname Zaitsev has the same root as the word "hare" (zayats) in Russian. Before going to Stalingrad, he served in the Russian Navy as a clerk but upon reading about the brutality of the fighting in Stalingrad, he volunteered for front-line duty. Zaitsev served in the 1047th Rifle Regiment of the 284th Rifle Division of the 62nd Army. He is notable for having participated in the Battle of Stalingrad. There, Zaitsev set up a snipers' training school in ...

Zaitsev served in the 1047th Rifle Regiment of the 284th Rifle Division of the 62nd Army. He is notable for having participated in the Battle of Stalingrad. There, Zaitsev set up a snipers' training school in the Metiz factory; it was run by Zaytsev. The snipers Zaytsev trained were nicknamed zaichata, meaning "leverets" (baby hares). Antony Beevor wrote in Stalingrad that this was the start of the "sniper movement" in the 62nd Army. Conferences were arranged to spread the doctrine of "sniperism" and exchange ideas on technique and principles that were not ...
