Myanmar government talks to ethnic groups
Myanmar's government is reaching out to armed ethnic groups in an attempt to end six decades of civil war. Achieving peace was a key demand made by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to the country last week, as a precursor to further engagement with the West. The first ceasefire agreement has been signed with the Shan ethnic group, and talks continue with nine other ethnic groups, but there is still a long way to go. The ethnic minorities' grievances run deep, even for those not currently locked in an armed struggle. Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports from Yangon.

Rohingya's Right to Education - Malaysia
The Rohingya are a Muslim Ethnic group of the Northern Rakhine State of Western Burma who fled what Amnesty International has called human rights violations since the 1970s. In order to escape discrimination and racist attacks many have taken refuge in jungles and abandoned places. However, Rohingya children cannot enrol in local schools because Malaysian law does not recognise their refugee status. The UNHCR has set up several small community schools which try to give these children a proper and structured education.

Tell You the Real China - 56 Ethnicities United as ONE CHINA
China is a united multi-ethnic nation of 56 ethnic groups. As the majority (91.6 percent) of the population is of the Han ethnic group, China's other 55 ethnic groups are customarily referred to as ethnic minorities. According to the fifth national census in 2000, 18 ethnic minorities have a population of over one million, namely the Zhuang, Manchu, Hui, Miao, Uygur, Yi, Tujia, Mongolian, Tibetan, Bouyei, Dong, Yao, Korean, Bai, Hani, Li, Kazak and Dai. Of these the Zhuang ethnic group has the biggest population, numbering 16.179 million. There are 17 ethnic groups with a population of between 100000 and one million, namely the She, Lisu, Gelao, Lahu, Dongxiang, Va, Sui, Naxi, Qiang, Tu, Xibe, Mulam, Kirgiz, Daur, Jingpo, Salar and Maonan. There are 20 ethnic groups with a population of between 10000 and 100000, namely, Blang, Tajik, Primi, Achang, Nu, Ewenki, Gin, Jino, Deang, Ozbek, Russian, Bonan, Monba, Oroqen, Derung, Tatar, Hezhen, Gaoshan (excluding the Gaoshan ethnic group in Taiwan) and Lhoba. The Lhoba ethnic group, at 2965, has the smallest population. The Han people can be found throughout the country, mainly on the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Pearl River valleys, and the Northeast Plain. The 55 ethnic minorities, though fewer in number, are also scattered over vast areas and can be found in approximately 64.3 percent of China, mainly distributed in the border areas of northeast, north, northwest and southwest China ...

Mongol Biyelgee: Mongolian traditional folk dance
UNESCO: Urgent Safeguarding List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The Mongol Biyelgee Mongolian Traditional Folk Dance is performed by dancers from different ethnic groups in the Khovd and Uvs provinces of Mongolia. Regarded as the original forebear of Mongolian national dances, Biyelgee dances embody and originate from the nomadic way of life. Biyelgee dances are typically confined to the small space inside the ger (nomadic dwelling) and are performed while half sitting or cross-legged. Hand, shoulder and leg movements express aspects of Mongol lifestyle including household labour, customs and traditions, as well as spiritual characteristics tied to different ethnic groups. Biyelgee dancers wear clothing and accessories featuring colour combinations, artistic patterns, embroidery, knitting, quilting and leather techniques, and gold and silver jewellery specific to their ethnic group and community. The dances play a significant role in family and community events such as feasts, celebrations, weddings and labour-related practices, simultaneously expressing distinct ethnic identities and promoting family unity and mutual understanding among different Mongolian ethnic groups. Traditionally, Mongol Biyelgee is transmitted to younger generations through apprenticeships or home-tutoring within the family, clan or neighbourhood. Today, the majority of transmitters of Biyelgee dance are elderly, and their numbers are ...

HIMBA - Ethnic Group (Namibia)
The Himba are an ethnic group of about 20,000 to 50,000 people living in northern Namibia, in the Kunene region (formerly Kaokoland). They are a nomadic, pastoral people, closely related to the Herero, and speak Otjihimba, a dialect of the Herero language.
The Himba breed cattle and goats. The responsibility of milking the cows lies with the women. Women take care of the children, and one woman will take care of another woman's children. Women tend to perform more labor-intensive work than men do, such as carrying water to the village and building homes. Men handle the political tasks and legal trials.
Members of an extended family typically dwell in a homestead, "a small, circular hamlet of huts and work shelters" that surrounds "an okuruwo (ancestral fire) and a central livestock enclosure." Both the fire and the livestock are closely tied to their belief in ancestor worship, the fire representing ancestral protection and the livestock allowing "proper relations between human and ancestor."
The Himba wear little clothing, but the women are famous for covering themselves with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre, possibly to protect themselves from the sun. The mixture gives their skins a reddish tinge. This symbolizes earth's rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life, and is consistent with the Himba ideal of beauty. Women braid each other's hair and cover it in their ochre mixture.
The Himba never wash, even after childbirth. In order to get rid of body odour, they apply strong-smelling substances to their bodies. They do not wash their hands either - instead they use specific dust to clean their hands.
Modern clothes are scarce, but generally go to the men when available. Traditionally both men and women go topless and wear skirts or loincloths made of animal skins in various colors. Adult women wear beaded anklets to protect their legs from venomous animal bites.
Boys are generally circumcised before puberty, to make them eligible for marriage. Marriages are arranged at a daughter's birth and usually take place when the girl is between about 14 and 17.

Vignettes of Beauty
Here is a collection of artistic nude video samples featuring several beautiful women that I have created erotic art and photos with.
I have been shooting sensuous and lightly erotic photos and videos of amateur nude models for years. The women I work with represent a wide variety of ethnic groups, ages and body types because I believe that Grace and Beauty are very diverse. I pose models doing simple things because I feel that a woman is often the most sexy and alluring when doing things that are not specifically sexual.

In the summer of 2006, four friends from San Diego, California set out on a mission to expose the atrocities being done to the people of Burma, more specifically, the Karen people – one of the country’s largest ethnic groups. Burma has quietly been host to the world’s longest running civil war – waged between the country’s military dictatorship and detractors from the regime.
Burma is a closed country known for strong penalties including imprisonment for people found inside its borders without the proper documentation. However, they knew that in order to capture the story they needed, they would have to sneak across the border through Thailand. With backpacks filled with borrowed film equipment they set out without a clue of how they would break inside a countryside filled with landmines, Burmese soldiers, and wet season torrential weather. They didn’t know what they would find, or if anyone would listen to their story when they returned.

Mixture Of Perceptions Among Igbo, Hausa & Yoruba Tribes Of Nigeria
Nigeria, a multi-cultural/multi-ethnic society has three major ethnic groups; Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. These three ethnic groups characterize the three major regions of the country (North, East and West), thus defining the behaviours and outlooks of life of the people. The diversities of these three languages has made it possible for each to have its own perceptions about the others thereby creating a mixture of perceptions that is very important in defining the picture and story of the Nigerian nationhood and the struggle of its people to understand their differences for better co-existence and respect for each other. Ukraine: A Hutsul Wedding, Part I
This is part one of two short (8-10 min) pieces I have edited of footage I took at a wedding in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine in August 2004. The wedding was that of a cousin of a friend, Anna. Much of Anna's heritage is Hutsul. Hutsuls and their descedents have lived in their part of the Carpathians for some 500-600 years. The sign at the entrance to Anna's home village of Jabloniv, 15 km from the town of Kolomyja in the state of Ivano-Frankivsk, boasts 450 yrs of settlement. The video begins with footage of Anna, two other friends (including my second-cousin Oksana Kolodnytska from Pidhajtsi in Ternopil state) and I leaving from Anna's village for another, nearby village for the wedding. The majority of Hutsuls identify themselves as Ukrainians, unlike other peoples of the Carpathians who, like the Hutsuls, speak a language closely related to Western Ukrainian dialects but who have traditionally called themselves Rusyns--ie, who never adopted the Ukrainian sense of their Rusyn identity, such as many Lemkos, Bojkos and Dolynjany. Many members of these Carpathian ethnic groups insist that they form a seperate ethnic identity from Ukrainians and refer to themselves as Rusyn or Carpatho-Rusyn. I am of the mind that the outsider must accept the ethnic self-definition of the majority of any ethnic group. Hence, Hutsuls indeed are Ukrainian, while it is up to Lemkos, Bojkos and Dolynjany to work out whether they belong to the Ukrainian group or are still to this day ...
