Dhankar Gompa, in Lahaul-Spiti
Ancient hand-painted thangkas that were painted with vegetable dies, and prayer flags inside this ancient Buddhist gompa in India. Dhankar Gompa is a Gompa, a Buddhist temple in the district of Lahaul and Spiti in India. It is situated at an elevation of 3894 metres (12774 feet) in the Spiti Valley between the towns of Kaza and Tabo. The complex is built on a 1000-foot (300-metre) high spur overlooking the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers - one of the world's most spectacular settings for a gompa. Dhang or dang means cliff, and kar or khar means fort. Hence Dhangkar means fort on a cliff. Dhankar, like Key Monastery and Tangyud Monastery in Spiti, and Thiktse, Likir and Rangdum monasteries in Ladakh, was built as a fort monastery on the Central Tibetan pattern. It was reported to have had 90 monks in 1855. KAZA OR KAZE OR KAJA (LAHAUL AND SPITI DISTRICT) LARGEST DISTRICT OF INDIA (UNSAFE ROAD AT NIGHT)
The town of Kaza, Kaze or Kaja is the subdivisional headquarters of the remote Spiti Valley valley in the Lahaul and Spiti district of the state of Himachal Pradesh in the Western Himalayas of India. Spiti, which is a part of the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal, is a high altitude or cold desert having close similarities to the neighbouring Tibet and Ladakh regions in terms of terrain, climate and the Buddhist culture. Kaza, situated along the Spiti River river at an elevation of 3650 metres (11980 ft) above mean sea level, is the largest township and commercial center of the valley and also the largest district of India.

Ride to Ladakh via Lahaul & Spiti on our Royal Enfield:Part-1
On 28th of August, 2011, I and Sandy went ahead on our much awaited riding trip to Ladakh. As we intended to make our trip as demanding as possible we decided to move via Shimla, Kinnaur Lahaul & Spiti and we were not disappointed. While riding in Lahaul and Spiti we rode on river-beds, stretches of sand, numerous water streams and occasionally we treated our Royal Enfields like KTMs especially while we rode on the stretch between Losar and Gramphu! On this 14 days trip we crossed 6 states and traveled more than 3700 kms! On this trip we met numerous unknown people who were generous enough to help us whenever we needed their help. Be it the monks at Komic who prepared our dinner when we arrived unannounced at 8:00pm or the Dhaba owner at Sarchu, who charged us less than the actual bill to ensure we are left with some money as we were still to reach Leh. This dream ride of ours was very much like a dream and both of us still feel lucky to live our dreams.

River Crossings in Ladakh
This is one of the numerous river crossings you'll encounter en route to Ladakh.. This one's in Lahaul itself.

Ride to Ladakh via Lahaul & Spiti on our Royal Enfield: Part-2
The second part of the video takes the story from Tanglang La to Leh to Khardung la, to Pangong to Drass war memorial to Srinagar and finally to back home. We encountered few good moments which we never are going to forget. Our overnight stay with the soldiers near Drass was something so special. Earlier we were aware of but now we knew about the hard life a soldier lives. We came to know about their joys, sorrows, ambitions, plans and so many little things. We also met immigrant labours from the plain, not accustomed to a high altitude life, who spends 3-4 months at altitudes over 16000ft making roads for a little more money. The tales of his hardships were heart wrenching. For us this trip was an experience to treasure for our lifetime. And I am sure only a motorcycle ride could have given us all this.
