Internet In Rural Areas
Many areas in west Texas area do not have Internet access. That's why a statewide map has been created to find those areas and hopefully make broadband service available to everyone. Abigail Prichard's job as a Ward County extension agent revolves around communication. "You can use it to communicate with people in you business you can use it to communicate with your family with your friends" She says sometimes trying to communicate with "all" her coworkers can be a difficult task, because some live in areas that do not provide an Internet service. "That's the things about not having the availability of it, it's not a choice you can make" Many people in rural areas with out broadband access find themselves at the Ward County Library. Librarians say it gets packed with people needing a computer. "Quite often they're here for the connection the internet connection," Librarian Bonnie Moore said. In an effort to close the digital divide, the state with the use of stimulus funds, launched the Texas Broadband Map. The map on connectedtx.org pinpoints areas with no access to home broadband service. "To me it's a tool it's something I can use when I have the need," Moore said. A representative of the website says most of the areas without service are in rural regions of the state, hindering their opportunities for business development, access to high education and even ordering medicine. The mapping service will allow service providers to target future investments. "It's a very ...

JET Program placement - Rural vs Semi-Rural vs Urban Japan
Congrats (omedetou!) to all those JET hopefuls who found out in April 2010 that they will be going to Japan this summer. Most of you will find out in May where in Japan you'll be going and what type of school you'll be teaching at (if you're going to be an ALT). This video discusses the pros and cons of living in an urban vs. semi-rural vs rural area. I could talk at length about this subject and I think this video just scratches the surface, so feel free to continue the discussion over in the forums at japanjuku.com I've made videos in the past covering the differences in teaching at elementary vs Jr High vs high school, so look for those here on YT. And check out my buddy Chris' site and podcast at http Thanks for watching! -Jason

Rural Medical School Competes With City Life
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Many rural areas in the United States have no doctor. Some medical schools are trying different ways to treat the problem. One idea is to educate doctors in smaller communities and hope they stay. Dr. William Cathcart-Rake heads a new program at the University of Kansas in the Midwest. He says, "We need more docs. There's somewhere like a quarter of all of our physicians in Kansas are sixty years of age or older. So we need to be replacing physicians, too." He says medical students from rural areas now typically study in Wichita or Kansas City, two of the biggest cities in Kansas. "They say, 'You know, I really have every intention of coming back to rural Kansas,' but they meet a soul mate, they get married, their soul mate happens to be from a big city and we never see them again." The program is based in Kansas' tenth largest city, Salina, home to about fifty thousand people. Salina is about a three-hour drive from Kansas City, past fields of corn, soybeans and cattle. Student Claire Hinrichsen grew up in a town of about six hundred people. One reason she likes the Salina program is because of the size. There are only eight students -- the smallest medical school in the country. Classes are taught by professors in Salina or on a video link from Kansas City or Wichita. Students who complete the four-year program will then do their residency training in a small community in the surrounding ...

Stay: Migration and poverty in rural Mexico
The unauthorized immigrant population in the United States has tripled from 3.5 million people in 1990 to more than 11 million in 2010. Stepped-up patrols along the border with Mexico—the source of 60 percent of unauthorized immigrants—has had little impact. Why? Border enforcement does not get to the root of why people leave their home countries: to escape poverty. In 2009, 96 percent of US foreign assistance to Mexico was spent on military and drug enforcement. Investing in rural areas instead can help reduce the pressure to migrate.

Documentary film on maternal and child health in rural areas in sub-Saharan Africa
This short video describes the activities of nurses in some Primary Health Centers in the province of Bas Congo in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The nurses were trained in the use of hand-held ultrasound in monitoring of the last trimester of pregnancy. This experience, which was developed in the context of a programme supported by the Italian Development Cooperation, has allowed local health services managers to significantly reduce maternal and fetal mortality and reduce the negative effects of lack of specialized medical staff through delegation of tasks to personnel with shorter training.

Deng Ltd, Ghana, Solar electricity for rural communities - Ashden Award winner
This video can be downloaded here: www.ashdenawards.org Deng won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2007. You can follow us on: Facebook bit.ly Twitter twitter.com Blog: www.ashdenawards.org Deng Ltd, an established engineering company in Accra, has developed a viable and sustainable business model for the provision of solar-home-systems to rural areas where access to grid electricity is limited. Deng has done this by venturing out of the capital and setting up a network of dealers to service the more remote areas. Deng has also set up a training centre for solar technicians in order to further expand the business and ensure the future sustainability of the scheme. The training centre, which has already trained 120 people from various sectors, is in itself a significant driver for growth of the solar PV market in Ghana. Whilst Deng does sell and install PV-powered grid backup systems around Accra, the mission and focus of Deng is in providing solar electricity to rural areas that do not have grid access. Since 1998 Deng has supplied 1000 fixed systems and 6000 solar lanterns to communities across Ghana.

euronews learning world - Education bridging rural-urban divide
In this edition of our special "Learning World" series we take a look at three countries. Migrants to China's ever-expanding cities are denied state education, so they are doing it for themselves. Free schools are catering to this thirst for knowledge. The Democratic Republic of Congo's Kinshasa sucks the life out of the rural areas around it. Those who fail in the big city end up on the streets, but one school is trying to teach new skills that will enable children to return home and rejuvenate their rural communities. ... www.euronews.net

Training Dentists for Rural Areas
There is a huge dental shortage in our state and ECU hopes its dental school will help fill the gap -- particularly in rural communities. The school recruits students interested in locating in rural areas of the state. These students train in the school's new state-of-the-art facilities and also have opportunities to work in community learning centers around the state to prepare for jobs after they graduate.

Syngenta Photography Award: Rural-Urban
Photography reaches beyond language. It communicates across boundaries, cultures, and different perceptions of the world. The 2012/13 Syngenta Photography Award explores the relationship and tensions between rural and urban environments: · Over half of the world's population now lives in urban areas. · Yet rural spaces provide the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat. · With competition for land, natural resources, and labor increasing, balancing these tensions is critical. Syngenta invites you to be part of a creative dialogue about our changing planet. For more information and to enter, see www.syngentaphoto.com.

Doctor Shortage in Rural Areas
Federal Government program to encourage overseas-trained GPs to move to "districts of workplace shortages" is flawed. Jessica Fryett-Tigges interviewed on ABC News on 18 December 2012. Reasons why many overseas trained doctors are unable to find jobs, even thought they're ready and will to go to areas of extreme shortage in rural areas.
