A television director directs the activities involved in making a television program and is part of a television crew.

Duties[link]

The duties of a television director vary depending on whether the production is live (as in a Television news or sports television event) or recorded to video tape or video server (as in a dramatic or interview production).

In both types of productions, the director is responsible for supervising the placement of professional video cameras (camera blocking), Lighting equipment, microphones, and props. In a dramatic arts production, the television director's role can be similar to that of a Film director, giving cues to actors and directing the video tape operator when to start and stop the Video tape recorder (VTR). In a television show composed of individual episodes, the television director's role may differ from that of a film director in that he or she may work only on some television episodes as opposed to be the auteur of the entire production. In an episodic television production the major creative control will likely reside with the Television producer(s) of the show. The television producer with creative control is called the showrunner.

Other than quickly calling out commands, the television director is also expected to maintain order among the staff in the control room, on the set, and elsewhere.

A news studio might have multiple cameras and few camera movements. In a sports broadcast, the director might have 20 or 30 cameras and must continuously tell each of the camera operators what to focus on.

While the director is responsible for specific shots and other production elements, the producer (typically seated behind the director in the second row of chairs in the control room) coordinates the "big picture", including commercial breaks and the running length of the show.

Tigmanshu Dhulia (born 3 July 1967) is an Indian film director, actor, screenwriter, and casting director. Dil Se.., for which he wrote the screenplay, was the first Hindi movie to chart in the UK top ten.^[1]

Early life and education[link]

Dhulia, who has his roots in the hills of Uttarakhand^[2] was born and raised in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He attended St. Joseph's College and Anglo Bengali Intermediate College, then Allahabad University where he majored in English, Economics and Modern History. After graduating in 1986 he took a Master's Degree in Theatre at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, completing the course in 1989. ^[3]

In 1990 he moved to Mumbai where he worked as casting director on the film Bandit Queen, a biopic of Phoolan Devi. He was casting director for 1995's Stiff Upper Lips, in which he also had a cameo role as a stallholder,^[4] and 2000's The Warrior, directed by Asif Kapadia. He directed his first film, Haasil (released 2003), a love story set among politicized students in northern India. The film was critically well received and has gained a cult following. Haasil was nominated for six awards (including best directorial debut) at the Zee Cine Awards, where it won for best screenplay.^[5] His second film Charas: A Joint Operation was a thriller concerning drug cartels, shot in marijuana-growing regions of Himachal Pradesh.

In 2011, Tigmanshu has come up with two films - the first one being Shagird which released on 13 May ^[6] and the second one was Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster ^[7]

Dhulia's film Paan Singh Tomar released on 2nd March, 2012 and won him wide critical acclaim. He has announced two other upcoming preojects, Milan Talkies, Jay Ramji and Saheb Biwi aur Gangster 2.^[8]

Recently he has been honored with the life membership of International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy of Film & Television by Sandeep Marwah President Marwah Films & Video Studios.

During the 90s Dhulia directed and produced several television programs, including the six-part Krishna's Dream for UK Channel Four.^[9] Kahani Ek Kanya Ki (1991) was written for Doordarshan, and Hum Bambai Nahin Jayenge (1993), for BI Television, was set in an acting school. 1996's Just Mohabbat was the story of a boy's coming-of-age, and Naya Daur (1995) adapted a classic Hindi novel by Bhagwati Charan Verma for Zee TV.^{[citation needed]}

Dhulia's 1999 series Star Bestsellers, a sequence of six 45-minute short stories ("Ek Sham Ki Mulaqat", "Fursat Main", "Hum Saath Saath Hain Kya", "Anekon Hitler", "Musafir", and "Bhawaron Ne Khilaya Phool"), won him popular recognition. His 2005 comedy Who Dus Din, for Star TV, satirized the Indian film industry, while Ek Duje Ke Liye, produced the same year and also for Star TV, was an adaptation of Neil Simon’s play The Odd Couple. He also directed the TV serial 'Rajdhaani' for Starplus featuring Neha Dhupia.

Currently he is working with in 3 more forth coming movies: Milan Talkies, Jai Ramji and Saheb Biwi aur Gangster 2.

Prakash Jha (Hindi: प्रकाश झा, born 27 February 1952) is an Indian film producer-director-screenwriter, who is most known for his political and socio-political films such as Damul (1984), Mrityudand (1997), Gangaajal (2003), Apaharan (2005) and multistarrer hit movie Raajneeti (2010). He is also the maker of National Film Award winning documentaries like, Faces After The Storm (1984) and Sonal (2002).

He now runs a production company, Prakash Jha Productions.^[5]Prakash Jha, owns the P&M Mall in Patna.

Early life and education[link]

Prakash Jha was born and raised raised at his family's farm in Baraharwa, Bettiah, West Champaran, Bihar, India. He did his schooling from Sainik School Tilaya,^[6] Koderma district and Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Bokaro Steel City (now in Jharkhand). Later, he joined Ramjas College, Delhi University to do B.Sc (Hons) in Physics; though he left studies after one year,^[7] and decided to go to Bombay and become a painter, though while he was preparing for J.J. School of Arts, he happen to witness the shooting of the film Dharma and got hooked on to filmmaking.

Soon he joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune in 1973, to do a course in editing, though midway through it, the institution was closed for while, due to student agitation, so he came to Bombay, and started working, and never went back to complete the course.^[8]

Prakash was at one time married to actress Deepti Naval with whom he has an adopted daughter Disha.^[9][10]

While still midway through his course, he started working on films independently, in 1974,^[11] and made his first documentary, Under the Blue in 1975, and continued to do so for next 8 years.^[7]

During this period he made some highly politically charged documentaries, like the one of 'Bihar Sharif riots', titled, Faces After Storm (1984), which received considerable attention, as it was banned within 4–5 days of its released^[8] though later it won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film for the year.

Finally, he made his debut, as a feature film director, Hip Hip Hurray in 1983, scripted by Gulzar and starring, Raj Kiran and Deepti Naval as leads.^[12] Next came, the film he received most recognition with, Damul (1984), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie in 1985. The film was based on the bonded labour issue in Bihar.

In 1986, he directed, Parinati, based on the story by Vijaydan Detha.^[13]

Over the years he has made over 25 documentaries, nine feature films, two television features and three television series.^[14][15]

In 2010, he directed Raajneeti, which was a contemporary take on the epic, Mahabharat. It starred Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpai, Naseeruddin Shah, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Nana Patekar and Ranbir Kapoor and was a critical and commercial success. His next venture was Aarakshan which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan Deepika Padukone and Prateik Babbar.^[16] Currently,Prakash Jha is diecting film Chakravyuh starring Abhay Deol, Manoj Bajpai, Kabir Bedi, Esha Gupta and Arjun Rampal.^{[17][18][19][20]} His second film Satyagrah will star Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn.^[21]

Politics[link]

Prakash Jha contested and lost election to the Lok Sabha from his native Champaran in 2004. He again lost election to the Lok Sabha in 2009 as Lok Janashakti Party candidate from West Champaran.^[22][23][24]

Social initiatives[link]

For the last five years Prakash Jha has been seriously involved with development initiatives in Bihar. He has been spearheading growth in infrastructure, health care and vocational training facilities in the state through the NGO Anubhooti.

Anubhooti[link]

Prakash Jha is the chairman of Anubhooti, a registered society that has been working for cultural development , improvement of health care, disaster management and the upliftment of farmers and socio-economic backward people in Bihar since 1991.

Most recently, the organization has been working for flood survivors. After the Kosi flood on 18 August 2008, Anubhooti has provided complete relief to 6000 people since September 2008. Anubhooti has created a model village, Hindolwa village, for the flood affected and is working towards their complete rehabilitation.

Sohail Khan born 20 December 1970) is an Indian director, writer, producer and actor working in the Hindi cinema. He is the younger brother of actors Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan. He produces films under his banner Sohail Khan Productions.

Khan was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra to screenwriter Salim Khan and his wife Salma (maiden name Sushila Charak). His paternal grandfather came to India from Afghanistan and settled in Madhya Pradesh; whereas his mother is a Marathi Hindu..^[1][2] His stepmother is Bollywood actress, Helen, who is famous for her dance and item numbers. His older brothers are actors Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan. His sister, Alvira Khan, is married to Bollywood actor Atul Agnihotri, while his younger sister Arpita Khan collaborated with Sneha Ullal for his movie Lucky: No Time for Love, which he produced with Sohail Khan Production.^[3]

Sohail Khan is son to legendary scriptwriter Salim Khan. He is married to Seema Sachdev and has two sons Nirvaan Khan and Yohan. He started his career as a film producer and director making his directorial debut with the 1997 action thriller Auzaar which starred his brother Salman and Sanjay Kapoor. He then directed both of his brothers Salman and Arbaaz in the hit film Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998) and the less successful Hello Brother (1999) under his earlier banner G.S. Entertainment.^[4]

In 2002, he wrote, produced, directed and made his acting debut in Maine Dil Tujhko Diya which performed poorly at the box office.^[5] He then appeared in a few more films, none of which sold well. He had his first hit with the film Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? (2005) in which he co-starred with his brother Salman Khan.^[6]

Khan has also produced live stage shows in India and all over the world featuring various Indian film stars. His company also produced music videos and even made a foray into television with 'Chehre Pe Chehra' which was directed by Rishi Vohra.

He wrote the story, produced and acted in the multi-starrer Fight Club – Members Only (2006), which did not do well at the box office. His only 2007 release as an actor was the multi-starrer Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love. He then produced Partner which starred his brother Salman and Govinda in the lead roles and was a box office success.^[7] In 2008, he has appeared in Hello and Heroes.

In 2010, he featured in Veer with brother Salman, released on 22 January 2010.^[8]
