Cartmel

Cartmel is a village in Cumbria, England, situated 2.2 miles (3.5 km) north-west of Grange-over-Sands and close to the River Eea. Historically it was in Lancashire; boundary changes brought it into the newly created county of Cumbria in 1974, yet keeping it within the boundaries of the traditional County Palatine of Lancaster (Lancashire; which is quite different from the Duchy of Lancaster) where, as in other palatines, the king's writ did not run. The village was once known as Kirkby in Cartmel, as it was the location of the church for the large parish of Cartmel. It is the location of the 12th-century Cartmel Priory.
The village has more recently become known as the "home of sticky toffee pudding", which can be purchased in various sizes from the Cartmel Village Shop. Its racecourse hosts popular meetings two or three times a year, traditionally in Whit Week. The ancient parish was traditionally known as the Land of Cartmel - an area quite separate from the Furness peninsula. Holker Hall, associated with the Cavendish family and the Dukes of Devonshire, is located within the original boundaries of the parish.

Cartmel Priory
Cartmel Priory is the parish church of Cartmel, Cumbria (formerly in Lancashire). The priory was founded in 1190 by William Marshal, later 1st Earl of Pembroke for the Augustinian Canons and dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin and Saint Michael. It was first colonised by a Prior and twelve monks from Bradenstoke Priory in Wiltshire. Of the monastic buildings the priory church and a gatehouse survive. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Windermere, the archdeaconry of Westmorland and Furness, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of St Mary, Allithwiate, St Peter, Field Broughton, St John the Baptist, Flookburgh, St Paul, Grange-over-Sands, Grange Fell Church, Grange-over-Sands, and St Paul, Lindale, to form the benefice of Cartmel Peninsula. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
Between 1327 and 1347 a chapel with four traceried windows was provided by Lord Harrington in the south choir aisle, and in fact his tomb is still in the building. The gatehouse, which apart from the church itself is the only surviving structure of the priory, was built between 1330 and 1340.

Cartmel Racecourse
Cartmel Racecourse is a small racecourse in the village of Cartmel, now in the Ceremonial County of Cumbria, historically in Lancashire. Meetings are held on the May and August Bank Holidays. Although the racecourse is small, it is noted as having a four furlong run-in, the longest in Britain. For a small racecourse Cartmel attracts relatively huge crowds of 20/25,000.
The earliest written account of racing at Cartmel dates back to 1856. The course was supported by local landowners. Until World War II it was a very small course featuring primarily amateur jockeys, but in the second half of the 20th century the racing programme was expanded and professionalised. The course is situated on the Holker Estate, and in 1998 Lord Cavendish bought out the previous management team.
Cartmel was the site of the Gay Future 'coup' in 1974 that involved switching horses before a race and relying on the lack of communications at the course.[1] It is also known amongst racegoers for the track leading up to and away from the course.

Furness
Furness ( /ˈfɜrnɨs/) is a peninsula in south Cumbria, England. At its widest extent, it is incorrectly considered to cover the whole of North Lonsdale, that part of the Lonsdale hundred that is an exclave of the historic county of Lancashire, lying to the north of Morecambe Bay.
The area is divided into Low Furness and High Furness. Low Furness is the peninsula; it juts out into the Irish Sea and delineates the western edge of Morecambe Bay. The southern end of the peninsula is dominated by the bay's tidal mudflats. The long thin island of Walney lies off the peninsula's south-west coast. High Furness is the northern part of the area, that was part of North Lonsdale but is not on the peninsula itself. Much of it is within the Lake District National Park, and contains the Furness Fells. It borders England's largest body of water, Windermere. Additionally, the Cartmel Peninsula is often included in definitions of Furness. Strictly speaking, however, Cartmel is not part of Furness, forming a separate peninsula between the estuaries of the rivers Leven and Kent.

Grange-over-Sands

Grange-over-Sands is a town and civil parish by the sea – with a wide tidal range, hence the "sands" name – in Cumbria, England. Grange-over-Sands was created an urban district in 1894 and lies historically within Lancashire. In 1974 Cumbria was created under Local Government re-organisation which absorbed the area referred to as "Lancashire North of the Sands" or North Lonsdale. Grange is now in South Lakeland District. The town remains part of the County Palatine of Lancashire and is part of the Duchy of Lancaster. It has a population of 4,042.
The town developed in the Victorian era from a small fishing village and the arrival of the railway made it a popular seaside resort on the north side of Morecambe Bay, across the sands from Morecambe. The 'over-Sands' suffix was added in the late 19th or early 20th centuries by the local vicar who was fed up with his post going to Grange in Borrowdale.
In 1932 a lido was built on the seafront but it closed in 1993 and was listed Grade II in 2011.

Holker Hall
Holker Hall is a country house with a celebrated garden situated on the Cartmel Peninsula, which was historically part of the county of Lancashire, but is now part of the county of Cumbria.
Before the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536 the land on which Holker stands belonged to Cartmel Priory. When the land came up for sale it was acquired by the Preston family, who were established local landowners. Since then it has passed from the Prestons to the Lowthers and then the Cavendishes by inheritance, but it has never been sold.
The Prestons are believed to have made Holker their main residence in about 1610. The estate was briefly sequestered by the Parliamentarians during the Civil War, but was restored upon the payment of fine. The last owner from the Preston family died in 1697 and left the house to his daughter Catherine, who was married to Sir William Lowther. Sir William's son Sir Thomas laid out formal gardens and added a north wing to the house.
The third and last Lowther to own the property, another Sir William, died childless before the age of thirty and left the estate to his cousin Lord George Augustus Cavendish, a younger son of the 3rd Duke of Devonshire, who served for a time as Comptroller of the Royal Household, and in his old age became Father of the House of Commons. Lord George Augustus commissioned John Carr to make alterations to the east and north wings of the house in a gothic style, and replaced the formal gardens with an informal natural landscape, thus beginning the evolution of the grounds towards their current form.

L'Enclume
L'Enclume (meaning "the anvil") is a restaurant located in Cartmel, Cumbria, England. In 2008, the restaurant held one star in the Michelin Guide. The restaurant was founded in 2003 by chef-patron Simon Rogan, who trained under Marco Pierre White, and co-owner, Penny Tapsell. It is situated in an 800-year-old former smithy with, from 2010, all the food supplied from Rogan's farm.
L'Enclume was featured in The Trip, a 2010 BBC comedy starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as fictionalised versions of themselves doing a restaurant tour of northern England.
L'Enclume has gained a point for a 9/10 rating in the 2012 Good Food Guide and has risen to 2nd in its list of its best restaurants in the UK.

Lancashire

Once its initial boundaries were established, it bordered Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire and Cheshire.
Lancashire emerged during the Industrial Revolution as a major commercial and industrial region. The county encompassed several hundred mill towns and collieries. By the 1830s, approximately 85% of all cotton manufactured worldwide was processed in Lancashire.Preston, Accrington, Blackburn, Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham, Chorley, Darwen, Nelson, Colne and Burnley were major cotton mill towns during this time. Blackpool was a major centre for tourism for the inhabitants of Lancashire's mill towns, particularly during wakes week.

River Eea
The River Eea is a small river in the Lake District, Cumbria, England running through the Furness region, which was once part of Lancashire. The River Eea is a relatively short system that arises from numerous small becks and streams throughout the Cartmel Valley. Its course is approximately 10 km long and the mouth is at Sand Gate marshes near Flookburgh, between Barrow and Kendal. It principally flows in a south-westerly direction.
The river's source is a spring in the hills, meaning it flows all year round. It's upper course is called Whitestone Beck. The river's main tributaries are Muddypool and Ayside Beck, which converge above Cartmel.
The river rises near High Cark in Newton Fell and the Whitestone Enclosure, and is soon fed by Black Beck (emanating from Fair Rigg south of Staveley-in-Cartmel) and Ayside Pool (rising above Ayside).
From there, the Eea runs past Green Bank and through Cartmel and Cark before flowing via Sand Gate Marsh into the estuary of the River Leven at Lenibrick Point, close to Chapel Island. It is now used as a fieldwork study point for the centre 'Castle Head', where students measure variables of the river such as the stream velocity, width, depth, turbidity, pebble roundedness, sinuosity etc.

South Lakeland

South Lakeland is a local government district in Cumbria, England. Its council is based in Kendal. It includes much of the Lake District.
The district was created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972. It was formed from the Kendal borough, Windermere urban district, most of Lakes urban district, South Westmorland Rural District, from Westmorland, Grange and Ulverston urban districts and North Lonsdale Rural District from Lancashire, and Sedbergh Rural District from the West Riding of Yorkshire.
Elections to the district council are held in three out of every four years, with one third of the 51 seats on the council being elected at each election. No political party held a majority on the council from the first election in 1973 to 2006. However since winning a majority at the 2006 election the Liberal Democrats have controlled the council. Our video is a guided walk in the south eastern area of the Lake District from Grange-over-Sands where we observe a verirty of different and very colourful ducks and geese from all over the world in the Ornamental Garden. We then walk on to Cartmel and visit the priory and race course and then we walk uphill to the Hospice on the summit of Hampsfell and back to Grange by the edge of Eggerslack Wood. The views are wonderful.

Cartmel is a village in Cumbria, England, situated 2.2 miles (3.5 km) north-west of Grange-over-Sands and close to the River Eea. Historically it was in Lancashire; boundary changes brought it into the newly created county of Cumbria in 1974, yet keeping it within the boundaries of the traditional County Palatine of Lancaster (Lancashire; which is quite different from the Duchy of Lancaster) where, as in other palatines, the king's writ did not run. The village was once known as Kirkby in Cartmel, as it was the location of the church for the large parish of Cartmel. It is the location of the 12th-century Cartmel Priory.
The village has more recently become known as the "home of sticky toffee pudding", which can be purchased in various sizes from the Cartmel Village Shop.[1] Its racecourse hosts popular meetings two or three times a year, traditionally in Whit Week. The ancient parish was traditionally known as the Land of Cartmel - an area quite separate from the Furness peninsula. Holker Hall, associated with the Cavendish family and the Dukes of Devonshire, is located within the original boundaries of the parish.
The village is served by the nearby Cark and Cartmel railway station opened in 1857 by the Ulverston and Lancaster Railway and which is currently served by the Furness Line.
Cartmel College at the University of Lancaster is named after the Cartmel peninsula.
Recently, Cartmel has become noted for Simon Rogan's Michelin-starred restaurant, L'Enclume.

Andrew Cartmel (born 1958) is a British science fiction writer and journalist, and former script editor of Doctor Who. He has also worked as a script editor on other television series, as a magazine editor, as a comics writer, as a film studies lecturer, and as a novelist.

Cartmel took a post-graduate course in Computer Studies and worked on computer-aided design for Shape Data Ltd (now UGS Corp) in Cambridge, England during the mid-1980s. He then turned more to writing and managed to gain an agent on the strength of two unproduced scripts, also attending workshops run by the BBC Television Drama Script Unit.
In late 1986, when he was in his late twenties,[1] Cartmel was hired as the script editor for the twenty-fourth season of the iconic science-fiction programme Doctor Who, having been recommended to the producer John Nathan-Turner by the producer's agent, who had seen some unproduced scripts Cartmel had written.[2] Cartmel worked on the programme for the next three years, overseeing the final three seasons of its original run on BBC One. He brought in several young, new writers and despite declining ratings, tried to take the series in a new creative direction.
The most significant legacy of this new direction might have been the so-called "Cartmel Masterplan", a back story developed with other writers that restored some of the mystery of the Doctor's background and could have explained exactly who he was.[3] Although hints were dropped in the two full series Cartmel edited, the proposed revelations never materialised on screen as the programme was taken off the air in 1989.
When production of Doctor Who was placed on indefinite hold, Cartmel became script editor on the BBC's popular medical drama series Casualty. After one season working on Casualty in 1990, Cartmel left the television industry for the rest of the decade[citation needed]. During the 1990s he wrote comic strips for Judge Dredd Megazine and Doctor Who Magazine and three Doctor Who novels for Virgin Publishing in their New Adventures series. This series had used elements of the "masterplan" as part of their overall story arc for the Doctor, particularly in the last Seventh Doctor novel Lungbarrow, written by Marc Platt.
In 1999 his first original novel, The Wise, was published in Virgin's short-lived series of new science-fiction novels, Virgin Worlds. The same year, he became editor of the science-fiction magazine Starburst, although the appointment was a short one and he left the magazine in 2000.[4]
Since then, he has written several pieces of Doctor Who fiction: in 2000, Winter for the Adept, an audio drama for Big Finish Productions'; in 2003, Foreign Devils, a novella for Telos Publishing; and, in 2005, Atom Bomb Blues, a novel for BBC Books. He developed a script for the third series of Torchwood entitled 'The Jinx', but it was dropped when the show's format was reworked. In 2010, Cartmel worked as script editor for Big Finish Productions' The Lost Stories line, overseeing the adaptation of story ideas created for Doctor Who's unmade 27th series into audio dramas (released in 2011). In addition to script editing the four "Season 27" stories, Cartmel wrote two scripts (Crime of the Century and Animal) and co-wrote a third, Earth Aid, with Ben Aaronovitch.
As well as Atom Bomb Blues, 2005 saw the publication of: Script Doctor - The Inside Story of Doctor Who 1986-89, an account of his work on the Doctor Who television series; Through Time: An Unofficial and Unauthorised History of Doctor Who; and two 2000 AD spin-off novels, Judge Dredd: Swine Fever and Strontium Dog: Day of the Dogs'.
Cartmel has also written a novel set in the world of Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner television series for Powys Media. The novel, released on February 15, 2008, is entitled Miss Freedom.
Common themes and techniques in Cartmel's novels include: animal rights; the use of animal perspectives; and extended metaphors of animal behaviour. These elements appear in the three Virgin New Adventures novels, the original novel The Wise, the Judge Dredd novel Swine Fever and the audio play Animal.
In 2001 Cartmel briefly returned to television as the script editor on the second season of Channel 5's fantasy / adventure series Dark Knight, writing what proved to be final episode of the series.[5]
His first stage play, End of the Night, a thriller with gothic overtones, was produced by Long Shadow Productions in the summer of 2003.[6]
In 2007 Cartmel was a finalist in the Nicotinell 'Lose the Smoke Keep the Fire' Stand Up Comedy Auditions.[7]

He attended Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, where he trained as a journalist. On completing his course he came to London and did a post-graduate in Film and Television, at Middlesex Polytechnic.
Career[link]
He then wrote and co-produced the political true story, 'The Fourth Reich', about the Nazis attempt to implant a Nazi government in South Africa during WWII, directed by Manie Van Rensburg, produced by David Selvan and starring Marius Weyers.
Malcolm Kohll's first filmed script was for the science fiction series Doctor Who. While he was at the BBC's Script Unit in early 1987 he was contacted by script editor Andrew Cartmel. Kohll began to develop a concept entitled The Flight Of The Chimeron. Shortly before transmission, the decision was made to change the title to the more Fifties-sounding Delta And The Bannermen. Although Cartmel was interested in working with the writer again, Delta and the Bannermen proved to be Kohll's only involvement with Doctor Who, although he was later contacted about the 1996 revival of the series, coproduced by the BBC and Universal Television.
After that he worked on several film comedies, and some serious historical/political work, including a potential mini-series and a pilot for a TV comedy series called "Chastity Brogan-US Marshall."
Kohll's most famous project was as one of the producers of the film The 51st State starring Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Carlyle. He also co-wrote the script to the film The Bone Snatcher.

He is currently writing and producing a film called Heaven & Earth, which is at pre-production stage. The film is to be directed by Academy-Award winner Marleen Gorris and relates the true story of Dr James Miranda Barry, the first woman doctor, forced to masquerade as a man.
In addition Malcolm is adapting two South African thrillers, by Margie Orford (Blood Rose) and Deon Meyer (13 Hours), for director Roger Spottiswoode.

Cartmel is a village in Cumbria, England, situated 2.2 miles (3.5 km) north-west of Grange-over-Sands and close to the River Eea. Historically it was in Lancashire; boundary changes brought it into the newly created county of Cumbria in 1974, yet keeping it within the boundaries of the traditional County Palatine of Lancaster (Lancashire; which is quite different from the Duchy of Lancaster) where, as in other palatines, the king's writ did not run. The village was once known as Kirkby in Cartmel, as it was the location of the church for the large parish of Cartmel. It is the location of the 12th-century Cartmel Priory.
The village has more recently become known as the "home of sticky toffee pudding", which can be purchased in various sizes from the Cartmel Village Shop. Its racecourse hosts popular meetings two or three times a year, traditionally in Whit Week. The ancient parish was traditionally known as the Land of Cartmel - an area quite separate from the Furness peninsula. Holker Hall, associated with the Cavendish family and the Dukes of Devonshire, is located within the original boundaries of the parish.
