Illinois is an important transportation hub; the Port of Chicago connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River via the Illinois River. As the "most average state", Illinois has long had a reputation as a bellwether both in social and cultural terms and politics, though the latter has not really been true since the early 1970s.

Benjamin Harrison (August 20, 1833 – March 13, 1901) was the 23rd President of the United States, serving one term from 1889 to 1893. Harrison, a grandson of President William Henry Harrison, was born in North Bend, Ohio, and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana at age 21, eventually becoming a prominent politician there. During the American Civil War, he served as a Brigadier General in the XX Corps of the Army of the Cumberland. After the war he unsuccessfully ran for the governorship of Indiana, and was later appointed to the U.S. Senate from that state.

Earl Warren
Earl Warren (March 19, 1891 – July 9, 1974) was the 14th Chief Justice of the United States and the only person elected Governor of California three times. Before holding these positions, Warren served as a district attorney for Alameda County, California and Attorney General of California. He is best known for the sweeping decisions of the Warren Court, which ended school segregation and transformed many areas of American law, especially regarding the rights of the accused, ending school prayer, and requiring "one-man-one vote" rules of apportionment. He made the Court a power center on a more even base with Congress and the presidency especially through four landmark decisions: Brown v. Board of Education (1954), Gideon v. Wainwright (1963), Reynolds v. Sims (1964), and Miranda v. Arizona (1966).

He is mainly remembered for his support of the cause of the American Revolutionaries, and for his later opposition to the French Revolution. The latter led to his becoming the leading figure within the conservative faction of the Whig party, which he dubbed the "Old Whigs", in opposition to the pro-French-Revolution "New Whigs," led by Charles James Fox. A Democrat, he served as the third Governor of California from 1852 to 1856 and was the first California governor to successfully complete an entire term in office, as well as the first to win re-election. Is it easier for you to go and buy things in the stores than it was four years ago? Is there more or less unemployment in the country than there was four years ago? Is America as respected throughout the world as it was? Do you feel that our security is as safe, that we're as strong as we were four years ago? And if you answer all of those questions yes, why then, I think your choice is very obvious as to whom you will vote for. If you don't agree, if you don't think that this course that we've been on for the last four years is what you would like to see us follow for the next four, then I could suggest another choice that you have.

Feb 23, 1980. In the New Hampshire primary, a single symbolic act dramatized the debut of Reagan's new image as a candidate and the demise of Bush's presidential hopes. It occurred during what was scheduled to be a two-person debate between Bush and Reagan in Nashua, New Hampshire, on Feburary 23, the Saturday before balloting. As it turned out, Bush crumpled under pressure orchestrated by Reagan's camp. Initially, both Reagan and Bush had seen advantages in a two-person debate sponsored by a local newspaper. When the FEC ruled that newspaper sponsorship of the debate amounted to an illegal campaign contribution and when Bush refused to pay half of the debate's cost, Reagan agreed to underwrite it himself. Reagan then moved to include the other five contenders - a move that identified him both as a candidate and a unifier. When the other candidates showed up on stage, Bush froze. As Reagan made his case for inclusion of the other candidates, the moderator ordered Reagan's mike turned off. Reagan responded, "I'm paying for this microphone, Mr. Green." The fact that the moderator's name was Breen seemed to matter little. The crowd cheered. When neither newspaper hosting the debate nor Bush would accede to the inclusion of the others, the other candidates left the stage. Reagan's prospects had been boosted, Bush's buried. Ronald Wilson Reagan (Tampico, Illinois, 6 de Fevereiro de 1911 — Los Angeles, 5 de Junho de 2004) foi um ator e político estadunidense, 33º governador da Califórnia e 40º presidente dos Estados Unidos.
Nascido em Illinois, Reagan mudou-se para Los Angeles, Califórnia na década de 1930, onde trabalhou como ator e se tornou presidente da Screen Actors Guild (SAG), e porta-voz da General Electric (GE). Sua carreira política tem suas origens durante seu trabalho para a General Eletric. Originalmente membro do Partido Democrata, Reagan mudou para o Partido Republicano em 1962, tendo na época 51 anos de idade, creditando tal mudança às posições cada vez mais esquerdizantes do Partido Democrata, afirmando que o Partido Democrata o havia abandonado, ao deixar de ser o partido de Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson e Grover Cleveland para se tornar o partido de Karl Marx, Vladimir Lênin, e Josef Stálin.[1]
Após realizar o seu famoso discurso A Time for Choosing, em apoio à candidatura de Barry Goldwater à presidência dos Estados Unidos em 1964, Reagan tornou-se um fenômeno no Partido Republicano, ganhando forte apoio entre os eleitores do partido e sendo persuadido a candidatar-se ao cargo de Governador da Califórnia. Foi eleito para o cargo dois anos depois, em 1966, e reeleito em 1970. Em 1968 e 1976, Reagan participou das primárias republicanas para escolha do candidato do partido à presidência, sendo derrotado em ambas as oportunidades. No entanto, em 1980 Reagan finalmente foi escolhido como candidato republicano e, logo após, elegeu-se presidente dos Estados Unidos, tornando-se o mais velho a ser eleito para o cargo (69 anos e 349 dias)[2].
Como presidente, Reagan implementou uma série de ousadas iniciativas econômicas e novas políticas. Sua política de recuperação econômica através do estímulo à oferta (supply-side economics), popularmente conhecida como "Reaganomics", incluiu medidas de desregulamentação e cortes de impostos, implementadas já no seu primeiro ano de mandato em 1981.

Reagan nasceu em Tampico, Illinois, o segundo de dois filhos de John (Jack) Reagan e Nelle Wilson. Em 1920, depois de anos se mudando de cidade em cidade, a família estabeleceu-se na cidade de Dixon em Illinois. Em 1921, com dez anos de idade, Reagan foi batizado na igreja de sua mãe, a Discípulos de Cristo, em Dixon, e em 1924 ele começou a frequentar a Dixon's Northside High School. Formou-se em economia em 1932 na Universidade de Eureka, IL.
Em 1927, com dezesseis anos de idade, Reagan começou um trabalho no verão como salva-vidas em Lowell Park, a três quilómetros de Dixon na vizinha Rock River. Ele continuou a trabalhar como um salva-vidas em Rock River pelos sete anos seguintes, tendo salvo 77 pessoas de afogamento. Posteriormente, Reagan faria uma piada de que nenhuma dessas ter-lhe-ia agradecido.

Em seu primeiro mandato, Reagan sobreviveu a uma tentativa de assassinato. Enfrentou uma greve dos controladores de tráfego aéreo, encerrando a greve após dar um ultimato aos grevistas e intimá-los a se apresentarem ao trabalho ou procurarem outro emprego. Ordenou a Invasão de Granada, derrubando o recém-instaurado regime pró-soviético, alegando a necessidade de proteger os cidadãos americanos residentes na ilha.
Reagan foi reeleito em 1984 em uma vitória massacrante, ganhando em todos os Estados americanos, exceto em Washington, DC e no estado natal de seu oponente (Walter Mondale).

O segundo mandato de Reagan foi marcado principalmente por suas políticas externas, especialmente o fim da Guerra Fria, os ataques aéreos a Líbia em resposta ao sequestro de aviões comerciais americanos e o auxílio americano à resistência afegã. Reagan durante seu segundo mandato renunciou à estratégia de apaziguamento (détente) com a União Soviética, aumentando maciçamente os investimentos militares americanos. Reagan descreveu publicamente a URSS como "um Império do Mal" e deu amplo apoio a movimentos anticomunistas e de resistência na América Latina, África, Ásia e Europa. Reagan também negociou com Mikhail Gorbachev um acordo de não proliferação nuclear, resultando na diminuição do arsenal nuclear de ambos os países.
Em 1989, Reagan deixou a presidência dos Estados Unidos obtendo os maiores índices de aprovação popular do século XX nos Estados Unidos.
Em 1994, anunciou em carta à nação que sofria do Mal de Alzheimer. Morreu 10 anos depois, aos 93 anos de idade. De todos os presidentes dos Estados Unidos, foi o segundo mais longevo (depois de Gerald Ford) 93 anos, 120 dias) e o que foi eleito com idade mais avançada (69 anos, 349 dias).

Apoiou o senador ultraconservador Barry Goldwater à presidência em 1964, e tornou-se membro da facção mais conservadora do Partido Republicano, Reagan conseguiu ser eleito governador da Califórnia em 1966, vindo a desempenhar o cargo até 1974. Nesse período reprimiu manifestações estudantis contrárias à Guerra do Vietnã em universidades californianas. Tentou depois, em 1968 e em 1976, ser o candidato do seu partido às eleições presidenciais, mas só em 1980 conseguiu a nomeação.
Derrotando o então presidente Jimmy Carter, tornou-se o quadragésimo presidente dos Estados Unidos. Cumpriu dois mandatos, de 1981 a 1989, tendo sempre como vice-presidente George Bush, que lhe viria a suceder no cargo.
Os anos da presidência foram marcados por importantes acontecimentos no plano interno e, sobretudo, no internacional. Reagan foi alvo de um atentado a tiro em 1981, ao qual sobreviveu mas que o deixou gravemente ferido. Entretanto, optou por praticar uma política externa agressiva, investindo na esfera da defesa e da diplomacia com o objectivo claro de combater o comunismo internacional, tendo dado apoio, inclusive, a vários ditadores de direita, como Ferdinand Marcos, das Filipinas. De fato, uma das marcas de sua postura política foi o anticomunismo.[3][4][5]
Os anos finais na presidência de Reagan foram perturbados por uma descoberta comprometedora: com o dinheiro resultante da venda ilegal de armas ao Irã estariam a ser apoiados os guerrilheiros Contra que se opunham ao regime de esquerda da Nicarágua. Esse episódio se tornaria conhecido como "escândalo Irã-contras". Embora não houvesse indícios claros de envolvimento ou sequer conhecimento da situação por parte do presidente, o caso abalou a credibilidade do próprio Reagan e a pressão da opinião pública levou ao afastamento de certos membros da sua administração.
Quando o então presidente Reagan visitou o Brasil em uma missão diplomática no ano de 1982, cometeu uma gafe quando em um banquete em Brasília, Ronald Reagan se levantou e propôs um brinde ao "povo da Bolívia". Estava ao seu lado o então ministro das relações exteriores do Brasil, Ramiro Elísio Saraiva Guerreiro [6]
[editar] Relações com os Soviéticos
Logo no início de seu mandato, Reagan já fazia diversas piadas a respeito dos soviéticos, cubanos e comunistas, sendo a maioria delas provocativas, o que irritou as autoridades soviéticas, que iniciaram, sob a voz de Leonid Brejnev, uma onda de novas piadas, discursos irônicos e retóricas, que, para não deixara barato à Reagan, faziam ironias a respeito do sistema capitalista, enquanto os americanos também às lançavam, do final da década de 1970 até o início da de 1980, iniciava-se uma batalha suja, de pensamentos apocalípticos e piadas xenófobas e ideológicas entre ambos países, o que faria voltar o temor de uma guerra nuclear, que só terminaria com a morte do líder soviético em 1982.[7][8][9]
No seu segundo mandato, porém, Reagan manifestou abertura ao diálogo com o líder reformista soviético Mikhail Gorbachev. Os dois chegaram a acordo quanto à necessidade de ser efectuado um desarmamento progressivo de parte a parte, assim pondo fim à chamada Guerra Fria.

Foi o mais longevo presidente dos EUA. Sua mão dominante era a esquerda, embora fosse considerado um ambidestro - possivelmente, um sinal de que foi forçado a treinar a escrita com a mão direita, na infância.[10][11]
Casou-se com Nancy Reagan em 4 de Março de 1952 na igreja Little Brown Church, em Valley, secretamente. Antes, já havia sido o terceiro marido da actriz Jane Wyman (entre 26 de Janeiro de 1940 e 28 de Junho de 1948). (Ela se casou posteriormente pela quarta e última vez.)
Em 1994, foi diagnosticado que sofria do Mal de Alzheimer, do qual viria a morrer dez anos mais tarde. Faleceu em 5 de Junho de 2004. Encontra-se sepultado na Ronald W. Reagan Presidencial Library, Simi Valley, Condado de Ventura, Califórnia nos Estados Unidos.[12]
[editar] Carreira cinematográfica
Após ter se graduado em economia em Eureka (1932), Reagan mudou-se para Iowa, onde trabalhou em uma estação de rádio; posteriormente trabalhou na rádio WOC em Davenport, e na rádio WH, em Des Moines, quando passou a ser o apresentador do time de baseball Chicago Cubs. Enquanto viajava com os Cubs, na Califórnia, Reagan fez um teste para o cinema, em 1937, assinando um contrato de sete anos com a Warner Brothers.[13]
Inicialmente participou de alguns filmes B; em 1937, teve o primeiro filme creditado, Love Is on the Air,[14] e em 1939 atuou em 19 filmes. Em 1940 atuou em Santa Fe Trail, e em 1942, alcançou sucesso com o filme Kings Row, de Sam Wood. Em uma cena desse filme, o personagem interpretado por Reagan, Drake McHugh, que teve as pernas amputadas por um sádico cirurgião, após voltar da anestesia diz: "Onde está o resto de mim"? ("Where's the rest of me?"). Reagan usou essas palavras no título de sua autobiografia em 1965. Reagan e muitos críticos consideravam Kings Row seu melhor filme. Apesar de Reagan ter se tornado uma estrela com seu desempenho, ele não pôde aproveitar seu sucesso, pois estava servindo nas Forças Armadas na Segunda Guerra Mundial. Após voltar da guerra, Reagan ainda atuou em diversos filmes, mas nunca mais voltou a fazer o mesmo sucesso que fez em Kings Row.
