Suez Crisis Part 1 of 2
In 1956, an international crisis over control of the Suez Canal put Britain and France into direct conflict with President Nasser of Egypt, a proud Arab nationalist determined to stand up to foreign powers meddling in Egyptian affairs.
To understand the deep roots of the crisis we go right back to the creation of the canal in 1869, and the long history of British intervention in Egypt - all with the usual Epic History TV maps as well as loads of brilliant and rarely-seen archive film from the period.

Suez Canal: Why is freeing the stranded ship so complicated? | DW News
Experts are warning it could take weeks to dislodge a huge container ship blocking Egypt's Suez canal. A fresh attempt today to refloat the vessel was not successful. Around 30 percent of the world’s shipping container volume transits through the canal DAILY. More than a hundred and fifty ships are now backed up, waiting to enter the waterway. The Suez Canal opens up a seven thousand kilometer route from Asia to Europe. The only alternative route - around the Horn of Africa - is much longer, but many ships are now opting for that detour. A prolonged closure of the Suez will almost certainly impact global trade, which has already been hit hard by the pandemic. The ship plugging the chokepoint that funnels 30 percent of the global seaborne trade.400 meters long and weighing more than 200,000 ...

This episode covers the Suez Crisis of 1956 which came about after Egypt, under Gamal Abdel Nasser, nationalised the Suez Canal. Britain, France and Israel then colluded to invade Egypt and retake the canal. Militarily this went well, but politically the crisis cost the allied powers far too much and so they withdrew in what was frankly a humiliating climbdown. Also it's the point in which Britain was officially no longer a superpower. So pretty important.
Recommended books:
The Arabs: A History by Eugene Rogan. A fantastic book that covers Arabic history from the Mamluk Sultanate to the modern day. Extremely detailed and pretty ambitious, too although be aware the author makes no attempt to hide their political biases.
Postwar: A History of Europe since 1945 by Tony Judt. Obviously this book only really tackles Suez from the perspective of the Europeans but does a great job in doing so. THE book for Cold War Europe.

The ship plugging the chokepoint that funnels 30 percent of the global seaborne trade.400 meters long and weighing more than 200,000 tons, the "Ever Given" has become an immovable barrier shutting down Egypt's Suez Canal. With around 10 billion dollars in trade at stake every day, diggers, tugboats, dredgers and a team of Dutch ship salvagers are working day and night to dislodge the vessel. More than 200 ships are caught in the world's longest maritime traffic jam. Some of them are now rerouting their journey around the Cape of Good Hope, a trip almost three times as long. The fear is that consumers will be noticing the delays before long. With the clock ticking, the US is among a growing list of countries offering help to refloat the Ever Given.DW spoke with maritime expert Dr. Sal Mercogliano about how the ship became lodged and what makes freeing it so complicated.

What Really Happened at the Suez Canal?
Exploring the engineering principles behind the recent obstruction of the Suez Canal, which caused a weeklong disruption in global shipping traffic. I give a brief overview of the bank effect and dilatancy of coarse-grained soils. Hopefully, the video helps you understand a few of the engineering challenges associated with navigating massive ships through tiny canals and what can happen when they run aground!
Errata:
- I incorrectly described the landform as the "Suez Peninsula." It is the "Suez Isthmus."

Suez Canal reopens after giant stranded ship is freed - BBC News
Traffic has resumed in the Suez Canal after a giant, stranded container ship blocking it for nearly a week was finally freed by salvage crews.
Tug boats honked their horns in celebration as the 400m-long (1,300ft) Ever Given was dislodged on Monday with the help of dredgers and tug boats.
Hundreds of ships are waiting to pass through the canal which links the Mediterranean to the Red Sea via Egypt.
It is one of the world's busiest trade routes.

Israel's Alternative Project to Suez Canal
Israel's Alternative Project to Suez Canal. A giant container ship the length of four football pitches has become wedged across Egypt's Suez Canal, blocking one of the world's busiest trade routes. Dozens of vessels were stuck, waiting for rescue boats to free the 400 meter-long ship. The blockage sent oil prices climbing on international markets. Therefore, Israel is seeking ways to open a new channel as an alternative to the Suez Canal.

"This is a story of how the government of the United Kingdom decided to attack an Arab nation; of how, afraid its oil supplies were under threat, it embarked on a strategy of regime change; of how Britian deliberately bypassed the United Nations, and of how a British prime minister led the nation to war based on suspect intelligence.
"But this isn't Iraq, 2003. This is Egypt, 1956." - Narrator

The ship is on a 77 days voyage from Asia to East Coast United States in which we've taken the Suez Canal route. By using Suez Canal instead of around cape of Africa, this will save more than 5000 miles of fuel and time.
