David Wiffen (born 11 March 1942, in Redhill, Surrey, England) is a folk music singer-songwriter. Two of his songs, "Driving Wheel" and "More Often Than Not", have become cover standards.
David Wiffen was born in Redhill, Surrey, in 1942. He spent his early childhood with his mother, living on an aunt's farm in Chipstead, while his father, an engineer, contributed to the war effort. Following the war, Wiffen's family relocated to London and, in 1954, to Claygate, Surrey, where Wiffen attended Hinchley Wood School.
Wiffen first sang with the Kingston upon Thames-based Black Cat Skiffle group. Wiffen moved with his family to Canada at age 16, and became part of the burgeoning folk music scene, initially in Toronto. In 1964, Wiffen hitchhiked to Edmonton and later managed The Depression folk club in Calgary.
In 1965, having moved to Vancouver, Wiffen was invited to perform at The Bunkhouse club on a live ensemble album. It became Wiffen's first solo album, David Wiffen at the Bunkhouse Coffeehouse, Vancouver BC, on the Universal International label, when the other invited musicians failed to show up.
David (/ˈdeɪvɪd/; Hebrew: דָּוִד, Modern David, Tiberian Dāwîḏ;ISO 259-3 Dawid; Arabic: داوُد Dāwūd; Syriac: ܕܘܝܕ Dawid; Ancient Greek: Δαυίδ; Latin: Davidus, David; Strong's: Daveed) was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 – 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010–970 BCE.
The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only Old Testament sources of information on David, although the Tel Dan Stele (dated c. 850–835 BCE) contains the phrase בית דוד (bytdwd), read as "House of David", which many scholars confirm to be a likely plausible match to the existence in the mid-9th century BCE of a Judean royal dynasty called the House of David.
Depicted as a valorous warrior of great renown, and a poet and musician credited for composing much of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms, King David is widely viewed as a righteous and effective king in battle and civil justice. He is described as a man after God's own heart in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22.
"One Step" was the Austrian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, performed in German almost exclusively (despite the English of the title) by Bettina Soriat.
The song was performed fourth on the night, following Norway's Tor Endresen with "San Francisco" and preceding Ireland's Marc Roberts with "Mysterious Woman". At the close of voting, it had received 12 points, placing 21st in a field of 25.
The song is an upbeat number, with Soriat criticising her lover for taking her for granted. The lyrics even contain a reference to Star Trek, with the line "sex with you passes by as fast as Starship Enterprise".
Due to poor performances, Austria was not permitted to take part in the 1998 Contest, but returned to the fold at the 1999 contest. Thus, the song was succeeded at that Contest by Bobbie Singer performing "Reflection".
"Driving Wheel", also called "Drivin' Wheel" or "Driving Wheel Blues", is blues song recorded by Roosevelt Sykes (listed as "The Honey Dripper" on early singles) in 1936. It became a standard of the bluesand has been recorded by numerous artists, including Junior Parker and Al Green who had R&B and pop chart successes with the song.
Roosevelt Sykes' "Driving Wheel Blues" is a solo twelve-bar blues, with Sykes providing piano accompaniment to his vocal. The song is performed at a medium tempo with the opening lyrics:
My baby don't have to work, she don't have to rob and steal (2×)
I give her everything she needs, I am her driving wheel
Sykes' recorded the song on February 18, 1936 for Decca Records. It was released before Billboard magazine or a similar service began tracking such singles, but "Driving Wheel" became an early blues standard. He later recorded additional studio and live versions of the song.
Junior Parker, as "Little Junior Parker", recorded "Driving Wheel" for Duke Records in 1960 or 1961. Although Parker's vocal line and lyrics follow Sykes' version, the song uses a group arrangement with a horn section and adds a break in the middle of the song. Most subsequent versions of "Driving Wheel" show Parker's influence, including the distinctive bass line. When the song was released in 1961, it spent eleven weeks in the Billboard R&B chart, where it reached number five; it also reached number 85 in the pop chart.
