New York Voices: Financial Crisis and the City Part II (3 of 4)
New York Voices: Financial Crisis and the City Part II: A New York Voices Special (originally aired 10-16-08)- Interview with banker Felix Rohatyn Rohatyn was credited with saving the city from financial catastrophe in the 1970s: The spirit of the City was very different [in the 1970s.] Now, people are really, really nervous, they are really concerned... We had New York City banks in 1975. Today, we have a couple of global banks whose main concern is not New York City, but the global economy.

Bob Herbert: A Call to Civic Engagement: Weston Lecture
SIPA hosted the Weston Lecture, featuring Bob Herbert, former New York Times op-ed columnist and Distinguished Senior Fellow at the economic equality think tank Demos. Mr. Herbert has written about politics, urban affairs, and social trends for numerous newspapers; he has also reported for NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, and Hotline, which he hosted. He is the author of Promises Betrayed: Waking Up from the American Dream and the forthcoming Wounded Colossus. Mr. Herbert is the winner of numerous awards, including the Meyer Berger award for coverage of New York City and the Ridenhour Courage Prize for the "fearless articulation of unpopular truths." The M. Moran Weston II Endowed Fund for Urban Research and Policy was established in 1998. As a minister, banker, developer and tireless advocate for housing and community development issues, and Columbia's first African-American trustee, Dr. Weston helped reshape the communities of Harlem and Morningside Heights and created new opportunities for underprivileged individuals and families. The fund supports a lectureship, which brings distinguished policy practitioners to SIPA to deliver a lecture focusing on urban issues such as housing and community development. Previous lecturers have included US Representative Charles Rangel, Ambassador Felix Rohatyn, and Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education Joel Klein.

American Gridlock: Why the Left and Right are Both Wrong
American Gridlock: Why the Left and Right are Both Wrong The pressing problems of massive debt, high unemployment, and anemic economic growth have increasingly divided the populace into warring political camps. Yet the current overwrought debate between free market capitalism and a government-driven economy distracts us from reaching logical, common-sense solutions to our biggest economic and social problems. Starting with first principles and using deductive analysis, leading economist and financial markets analyst H. Woody Brock eschews today's ideologically determined positions and offers new "win-win" policy prescriptions that transcend the current ideological divide. In his new book, American Gridlock: Why the Left and Right are Both Wrong -- Commonsense 101 Solutions to the Economic Crises, Dr. Brock tackles the five challenges critical to the nation's future: preventing a Lost Decade with permanently high levels of unemployment; sparing the nation long-run bankruptcy from exploding healthcare costs; preventing future financial storms; standing up to authoritarian mercantilist economies like China; and addressing the vital issue of distributive justice or ensuring fair shares of wealth and income. Dr. Brock will be joined in the discussion by James Fallows, national correspondent for The Atlantic, who writes regularly on many of the national issues that are the subject of Dr. Brock's book. A founding member of New America's Board of Directors, Mr. Fallows has ...
