Asiago
Asiago (Cimbrian: Slege, German: Schlägen) is the name of both a minor township (population roughly 6,500) and the surrounding plateau region -is the most extensive area of high plateau on Alps- (the Altopiano di Asiago or Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, Asiago plateau) in the Province of Vicenza in the Veneto region of Northeastern Italy. It is near the border between the Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol regions in the foothills of the Alps, and about equidistant (100 km) from the major cities of Trento to the west and Vicenza to the south.
Although probably best known internationally as the origin of Asiago cheese, Asiago was also the site of a major battle between Austrian and Italian forces on the Alpine Front of World War I. It is a major ski resort destination as well as the site of the Astrophysical Observatory of Asiago, operated by the University of Padua.
Until the middle of the nineteenth century many of the people of Asiago spoke Cimbrian, an ancient German dialect.
Asiago is the birthplace of author Mario Rigoni Stern, and features prominently in his stories. It is also described in Emilio Lussu's A Year on the Altopiano.

Bassano del Grappa
Bassano del Grappa (Venetian simply: Basan /ba'saŋ/, italianized: Bassan or Bassàn) is a city and comune in the province of Vicenza, region Veneto, in northern Italy. It bounds the communes of Cassola, Marostica, Solagna, Pove del Grappa, Romano d'Ezzelino, Campolongo sul Brenta, Conco, Rosà, Cartigliano and Nove. Some neighbourhoods of these communes have become in practice a part of the urban area of Bassano, so that the population of the whole urban area is higher than the population of Bassano proper.
The artist Jacopo Bassano was born, worked, and died in Bassano and took it as his surname. Bassano Del Grappa is also famous for inventing the spirit Grappa, traditionally an after-dinner drink made from pomace (discarded grape seeds, stalks, and stems).
The city was founded in the 2nd century BC by a Roman called Bassianus, whence the name, as an agricultural estate. However, an ancient bronze sword (called "spada di Riccardo"), found in 2009 and dating back to the VII century BC, possibly between XV-XVIII century BC, suggests that the area of Bassano was already inhabitated not just in the pre-Roman, but possibly even in the pre-Venetic period.

Battle of Asiago
The Battle of Asiago (Battle of the Plateaux) or the Trentino Offensive (in Italian: Battaglia degli Altipiani), nicknamed Strafexpedition ("Punitive expedition") by the Austrians, was a counteroffensive launched by the Austro-Hungarians on the Italian Front on 15 May 1916, during World War I. It was an unexpected attack that took place near Asiago in the province of Vicenza (now in northeast Italy, then on the Italian side of the border between the Kingdom of Italy and Austria-Hungary) after the Fifth Battle of the Isonzo (March 1916).
Already for some time the Austrian commander-in-chief, General Conrad von Hötzendorf, had been proposing the idea of a Strafexpedition that would lethally cripple the Italian ex-ally, claimed to be guilty of having betrayed the Triple Alliance, and in previous years he had had the frontier studied in order to formulate studies with regard to a possible invasion.
The problem had appeared to be serious, mostly because the frontier ran through high mountains and the limited Italian advances of 1915 had worsened the situation and excluded a great advance beyond the valleys of Valsugana and Val Lagarina (both connected by railway) and the plateaus of Lavarone, Folgaria and Asiago.

Breganze
Breganze is a town in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, Italy. It is northeast of Via Roma. During World War II, the Germans were on one side of the river and the Allies were on the other, and a firefight occurred across the river.
The area around Breganze is permitted to produce red and white Italian DOC wine. To be included in the DOC wine, the grapes must be harvested up to a maximum yield 14 tonnes/hectare (13 tonnes for the varietal style) with the finished wine fermented to a minimum alcohol level of 11% (11.5% for the varietal style). An addition Superiore designation can be added if the wine attains a minimum alcohol level of 12%.
Red Breganze is composed of a minimum 85% Merlot with Marzemino, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gropello, Pinot noir and/or Freisa permitted to make up to 15% of the remaining blend. For the white Breganze, a minimum of 85% Friulano can be blended with Vespaiolo, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio, Riesling Italico and Sauvignon blanc also potentially included in the blend to fill in the remainder. Single variety wines can be produced, provided that the grape variety makes up 100% of the wine (the only exception are the two Cabernets which can be a blend of both) with the grapes held to a more limited yield restriction and higher minimum alcohol content. Most of these wines are produced dry, with the exception being Vespaiolo that can be produced in both a dry and sweet passito style wine. When Vespaiola is used to produce a dessert style wine from partially dried grapes it maybe labeled as Torcolato.

The village of Calvene rises 201 metres above sea level and is in a valley through which the river Astico and Chiavona stream run. We know that Calvene has existed since Roman times because of numerous archeological discoveries over various epochs, some of which carry inscriptions of a certain “gens Calvena” (or Calvenia) settled in Venetian area. There have, in fact, been numerous discoveries of relics and money in the Astico valley from Roman times, proving the dominion of the Romans on the locals.
Calvene and its entire region remained subject to Roman rule as it went from splendor to its downfall and consequent destruction by Barbarian Hordes who invaded Italy at various times.

Numerous archeological finds from various epochs bear witness to the ancient past of Isola Vicentina. These finds include pottery dating back to the Iron Age, a column with an inscription in a Venetian language, a Roman tombstone, and several Lombardic tombs.
It is evident from these discoveries that the territory where Isola Vicentina now lies was already very important in very ancient times. This was due mainly to its geographical position along important roads to Vicenza and Schio.
The earliest written record in which we find Isola Vicentina mentioned dates back to 753 A.D.
During the Middle Ages, the territory was owned first by the bishop, later by the Conti family (until the twelfth century), and finally by the Da Vivaro family. The area was repeatedly the scene of conflict between the powerful ruling families of the day.
All of the territory of Vicenza, including Isola Vicentina, became part of the Venetian Republic in the fifteenth century.
Several centuries of peace followed, to be interrupted only by the arrival of Napoleon’s troops in the late nineteenth century. Isola Vicentina was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, along with the rest of the Veneto Region.

Marostica
Marostica (Venetian language: Maròstega), is a town and comune in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, northern Italy. It is mostly famous for its living chess event and for the local cherry variety.
The name of the city can be traced back to the Venetic (Adriatic Veneti) language and recalls the hills (mar/maros) and the several streams of water (rost) coming down from the adjacent mountains and the verb "to have" in Venetic language (ga). Hence the name means "that has mountains and hills". Several Venetic findings have been discovered, dating back to the first millennium B.C. When the Adriatic Veneti federated with the Romans, they slowly abandoned their alphabet (Venetic) to use the Latin one.
The spoken language evolved and merged with the Gallo-Iberian branch of Romance languages to form the modern-day Venetian Language (of which there are a number of branches, including Padovano, Veneziano, Veronese, Feltrino, and so on). The Venetian Language is still widely used throughout the region.

The land of Montecchio Maggiore has been inhabited since the late Stone Age, though it was invaded and occupied many times. Two castles built about 975 are claimed to be the inspiration for the Romeo and Juliet legend. Luigi da Porto of Vicenza set the story here in his novel of 1552.

Population is unevenly spread throughout the province. Recoaro Terme
Recoaro Terme is a town and comune in the province of Vicenza, Veneto, Italy. It is known for his mineral spring waters: Lora is bottled and commercialized, while some of the others are used for hydrotherapy in Terme Recoaro Spa.
The area of Recoaro was settled in the 13th century by German colonists, a document mentioning a villa in Rovegliana (now a frazione of Recoaro) in 1262. Later it was under the Scaliger, the Visconti of Milan and then under the Republic of Venice, to which it belonged until the late 18th century.
In 1689 thermal waters were discovered, which led to the development of Recoaro as a tourist resort in the following century, although most of the population lived on agriculture until the 19th century.
After being part of the Austrian puppet Lombardy-Venetia, Recoaro became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy in 1866. Friedrich Nietzsche sojourned here in 1881 and allegedly received the inspiration for his Also sprach Zarathustra.
During the Second World War Recoaro was the site of a Nazi command, with the occupation of many buildings by German troops, including the spa, which was bombed by Usa air force in April 1945.

Schio
Schio is a town and comune in the province of Vicenza (region of Veneto, northern Italy) situated North of Vicenza and East of the Lake of Garda. It is surrounded by the Little Dolomites (Italian Prealps) and Mount Pasubio.
Its name comes from Latin: escletum was a wood of oaks and it was first used in a document of some Benedictines from Vicenza. The first settlements were around two old hills, where now there are respectively the ruins of an old castle and a majestic neoclassical cathedral.
By the 12th century Schio had become an important centre of prosperous wool manufacturing. The city was ruled by the Venetian Maltraversi family until 1311.
Schio is now an industrial town thanks to Alessandro Rossi, who founded the biggest Italian wool firm (Lanerossi) in the 19th century. Rossi also arranged the building of houses, nurseries, schools, theatres and gardens for his workers. The most important textile factories in Schio were Lanerossi, Conte and Cazzola. Schio was called "Manchester of Italy", because it was the focal point of the northern wool trade like the British city.

Valdagno

Valdagno's town was founded in 861, the name deriving from the Latin amins, then amnius, meaning "river". It is first mentioned in a 1184 document when it was a fief given by the Vicenza bishop to the Trissino family.
Two castles where erected on two opposite hills, one being named the Valdagno castle and the other the Panisacco Castle. However the Vicenza comune started very soon to contend it to the Trissino family, who in turn joined forces with Scaligers to defend it.
In 1291, in the course of the war with Verona, Venice occupied Valdagno and kept it until 1340. In 1377 it was pillaged by Bernabò Visconti and in 1404 it went back to the Venetians. From 1434 to 1439 it was occupied by the Visconti family and then re-annexed to Venice by Gian Giorgio Trissino.
Between 1510 and 1514 it suffered repeated destructions by the armies of Maximilian I, during the War of the League of Cambrai. Starting from 1797, with the fall of the Republic of Venice, Valdagno fell under the French and Austrian rule. It was annexed to the newly created Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

Emilio Lussu
Emilio Lussu (December 4, 1890 - March 5, 1975) was an Italian soldier, politician and a writer.
Lussu was born in Armungia, province of Cagliari (Sardinia) and graduated with a degree in law in 1914. Lussu married Joyce Salvatori, a notable poet, and member of the noble family of the Marche.
Prior to the entry of Italy into World War I, Lussu joined the army and was involved in several skirmishes. As a complementary officer of the Brigata Sassari in 1916 (the famous Sassari infantry Brigade of the Italian Army), he was stationed in Asiago. He was in command of the defense of Verona against the Austrian Army. The defense was, at first, victorious but was soon followed by a counter attack (mainly on Monte Zebio and Castelgomberto) that lasted until July 1917. The trench warfare that Lussu observed would serve as an archetype for his later works.
After the war Lussu, together with Camillo Bellieni, founded the Partito Sardo d'Azione (The Sardinian Action Party), that blended social-democratic ideas and Sardinian autonomy. The party took a formal position in 1921, opposing the increasing power of the Fascist movement. Lussu was elected to the Italian parliament in 1921 and, in 1924 was among the Aventine secessionists who withdrew from the Italian Parliament after the murder of Giacomo Matteotti.

Enrico Fabris
Enrico Fabris (born 5 October 1981, Asiago, province of Vicenza) is a former Italian long track speed skater who has won three World Cup races and became the first European Allround Champion from Italy when he won the 2006 European Championships one month before the Winter Olympics in Turin. In 2007 he won also the silver medal an in 2008 the bronze medal. Fabris is also a six-time Italian Allround Champion.
At the 2006 Olympics he won a bronze medal in the men's 5,000 m event, Italy's first ever Olympic medal in speed skating. Five days later, he was in the winning team on the team pursuit event, to claim Italy's first Olympic speed skating gold. With a time of one minute, 45.97 seconds in the 1,500 m race, Fabris claimed his third medal and defeated American favourites Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick to become the first non-American to win an individual men's event through the first four races of the Turin Winter Games. On 10 November 2007 he took the 5,000 meter world record with 6.07.40, which he lost one week later, when Sven Kramer skated faster in Calgary.

Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections and two non-fiction works. Three novels, four collections of short stories and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of these are considered classics of American literature.
Hemingway was raised in Oak Park, Illinois. After high school he reported for a few months for The Kansas City Star, before leaving for the Italian front to enlist with the World War I ambulance drivers. In 1918, he was seriously wounded and returned home. His wartime experiences formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms. In 1922, he married Hadley Richardson, the first of his four wives. The couple moved to Paris, where he worked as a foreign correspondent, and fell under the influence of the modernist writers and artists of the 1920s "Lost Generation" expatriate community. The Sun Also Rises, Hemingway's first novel, was published in 1926.

Lucio Topatigh (born October 19, 1965) is a former Italian ice hockey player.
Born in Gallio, Vicenza, Topatigh spent all his career in Serie A league, with Asiago Hockey A.S. and Hockey Club Bolzano-Bozen. Topatigh, also known as Il falco di Gallio ("The Hawk of Gallio"), played from 1990 until 2002 in the Blue Team, the Italian national ice hockey team.
Mickey Goulet, the Italian coach, recalled Topatigh for 2006 Winter Olympics. Topatigh was the oldest Italian player at those Olympics in Turin. In 2008 he retired from professional hockey. [1]

Mario Rigoni Stern
Mario Rigoni Stern (November 1, 1921, Asiago – June 16, 2008) was an Italian author and World War II veteran.
His first novel Il sergente nella neve, published in 1953 (and the following year in English as The Sergeant in the Snow), draws on his own experience as a Sergeant Major in the Alpini corps during the disastrous retreat from Russia in World War II. It is his only work to be translated into English and Spanish.
Other well-known works also include Le stagioni di Giacomo (Giacomo's Seasons), Storia di Tönle (The Story of Tönle), and the collection of short stories Sentieri sotto la neve (Paths Beneath the Snow).

Vera Brittain
Vera Mary Brittain (29 December 1893 – 29 March 1970) was a British writer, feminist and pacifist, best remembered as the author of the best-selling 1933 memoir Testament of Youth, recounting her experiences during World War I and the beginning of her journey towards pacifism.
Born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Brittain was the daughter of a well-to-do family who owned paper mills in Hanley and Cheddleton. She had an uneventful childhood with her only brother her closest companion. At 18 months her family moved to Macclesfield, Cheshire and when she was 11 they moved again, to Buxton in Derbyshire. From the age of thirteen she attended boarding school at St Monica's, Kingswood in Surrey where her aunt was principal. Studying English Literature at Somerville College, Oxford, she delayed her degree after one year in the summer of 1915 in order to work as a V.A.D. nurse for much of the First World War. Her fiancé Roland Leighton, two other close friends Victor Richardson and Geoffrey Thurlow, and her brother Edward Brittain MC were all killed during the war. Their letters to each other are documented in the book Letters from a Lost Generation.

World War I
World War I (WWI), which was predominantly called the World War or the Great War from its occurrence until 1939 (World War II), and the First World War or World War I thereafter, was a major war centred in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. It involved all the world's great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom, France and Russia) and the Central Powers (originally centred around the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy; but, as Austria–Hungary had taken the offensive against the agreement, Italy did not enter into the war). These alliances both reorganised (Italy fought for the Allies), and expanded as more nations entered the war. Ultimately more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history. More than 9 million combatants were killed, largely because of enormous increases in lethality of weapons, thanks to new technology, without corresponding improvements in protection or mobility. It was the sixth-deadliest conflict in world history, subsequently paving the way for various political changes such as revolutions in the nations involved.

L'Altopiano dei Sette Comuni (Hoaga Ebene vun Siiben Kameûn in lingua cimbra), noto anche col nome di Altopiano di Asiago dal nome del suo principale centro, è un vasto altopiano (il più esteso d'Italia) che si trova sulle Alpi vicentine, nella zona a nord della Provincia di Vicenza al confine con la Provincia di Trento. Compreso tra i fiumi Astico e Brenta, il massiccio ha un'estensione, relativamente all'ambito amministrativo dei Sette Comuni, di 473,5 km², ma l'estensione geografica del gruppo montuoso nel suo insieme raggiunge gli 878,3 km² dato che parte del suo territorio ricade in altri ambiti amministrativi (come la Val di Sella, la Piana di Vezzena e parte della Marcesina in Trentino e le colline subalpine nella pedemontana vicentina). L'estensione dell'altopiano in senso stretto è invece pari a 560,1 km² con un'altitudine media di 1317 m. Il primo colpo di cannone da parte italiana della Prima Guerra Mondiale, che sancì l'entrata in guerra da parte del regio esercito, fu sparato dal Forte Verena, alle ore 4 del 24 maggio 1915. In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make Lightening Fast Asiago Garlic Bread--a quick and delicious bread you can make in a hurry! Ingredients: 6 to 8 slices Asiago Cheese Italian bread, sliced in 1-inch slices (I get this bread at the deli section of my grocery store in loaves. You may use regular Italian bread, French bread, etc.) 4 tablespoons softened butter or margarine 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder In a small bowl, use a fork to blend 4 tablespoons of softened butter or margarine with 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder. Spread each slice of bread on top and bottom with butter mixture, and place the slices in a baking pan. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 10 minutes. Turn, after half-way through baking, if you like. Remove from pan, and place on a nice serving dish. This bread is interesting and tasty, and goes with anything from steak to a full Italian meal. No one will ever guess it is so quick and easy to make!!!

Butter four 6oz ramekins. Divide the tomato sauce among the ramekins. Crack one egg into each ramekin along with one yolk into each. Add 1 tsp cream to each ramekin and divide the chives as well. Add 1/4 cup of cheese to the top of each ramekin. Bake for 8 to 10 min until done. The cheese will be melted but the eggs with jiggle just slightly. Asiago (Cimbrian: Slege, German: Schlägen) is the name of both a minor township (population roughly 6,500) and the surrounding plateau region -is the most extensive area of high plateau on Alps- (the Altopiano di Asiago or Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, Asiago plateau) in the Province of Vicenza in the Veneto region of Northeastern Italy. It is near the border between the Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol regions in the foothills of the Alps, and about equidistant (100 km) from the major cities of Trento to the west and Vicenza to the south.
Although probably best known internationally as the origin of Asiago cheese, Asiago was also the site of a major battle between Austrian and Italian forces on the Alpine Front of World War I. It is a major ski resort destination as well as the site of the Astrophysical Observatory of Asiago, operated by the University of Padua.

Until the middle of the nineteenth century many of the people of Asiago spoke Cimbrian, an ancient German dialect.
Asiago is the birthplace of author Mario Rigoni Stern, and features prominently in his stories. It is also described in Emilio Lussu's A Year on the Altopiano.
Battle of Asiago[link]
The Battle of Asiago (Battle of the Plateaux) was a counter-offensive launched by the Austro-Hungarians on the Italian Front on May 1916, during World War I. It was an unexpected attack that took place near Asiago (now in northeast Italy, then on the Italian side of the border between the Kingdom of Italy and Austria-Hungary).
Ernest Hemingway fought here. In a later engagement, in 1918, Edward Brittain, brother of Vera Brittain was killed and was buried in the Granezza British military cemetery on the plateau. In 1970 Vera's ashes were scattered on his grave.

The city is home to HC Asiago, a professional ice hockey team currently playing in the country's top division, Serie A1.
Asiago Vipers is instead a professional inline hockey team based in Asiago. The team plays in the highest Italian inline league.
