Bessie Jones & the Georgia Sea Island Singers: Sink 'Em Low (1959)
Bessie Jones leads a work song she first heard sung by a road-crew chain gang in Georgia in the nineteen-teens. With support by Big John Davis, Willis Proctor, and Henry Morrison. Recorded by Alan Lomax in Williamsburg, Virginia, April 11, 1960. The Georgia Sea Island Singers were one of the most popular groups on the 1960s and '70s folk circuit, performing at colleges, festivals, the Poor People's March on Washington, and Jimmy Carter's inauguration. "Join the Band" - released on LP through Mississippi Records in December 2011 and digitally by Global Jukebox in February 2012 - is a collection of their first stereo recordings, made by Alan Lomax in 1959 and 1960, that showcases their utterly unique hymns, spirituals, ring shouts, and work songs. Alan Lomax first visited the Georgia Sea Island of St. Simons in June of 1935 with folklorist Mary Elizabeth Barnicle and author Zora Neale Hurston. There they met the remarkable Spiritual Singers of Coastal Georgia, as the group was then called, and recorded several hours of their songs and dances for the Library of Congress. Returning 25 years later, Lomax found that the Singers were still active, and had been enriched by the addition of Bessie Jones, a South Georgia native with a massive collection of songs going back to the slavery era. "Join the Band" features freshly remastered audio from 24-bit digital transfers of Alan Lomax's original tapes and notes by the Alan Lomax Archive's Nathan Salsburg and Anna Lomax Wood, who ...

Close Encounter with a Baby Sea Lion - Gardner Bay, Espanola Island, Galapagos Islands 11/15/09
A baby sea lion mistakes me for mommy. Must have been the brown bathing suit. 7/10/12 Wow, folks! I forgot about this video for a year or so. So many of you have viewed it, and I've really enjoyed your comments. Apologies to everyone who posted and emailed questions. Thanks to my sister, I was fortunate enough to take the trip of a lifetime back in November of 2009: a National Geographic/Lindblad cruise through the Galapagos Islands. The ship accomodated 96 vacationers -- it was VERY nice and if you ever have the opportunity you should do it! On our excursions to the individual islands we were accompanied by trained Ecuadorian naturalists at all times, so I'm confident that we were behaving appropriately. We took care to keep our distance from the wildlife and were told Do Not Touch! This little guy wandered up the beach while it's mother was out getting food. It first approached some adult Sea Lions up the beach a ways who gave it the cold shoulder. Then it headed for our group, and for me in my brown swim suit. I turned 60 this year and don't mind being mistaken for a Sea Lion. It was an honest mistake. :) Those of you who want to use this clip may do so. Please be nice. Kristin

Black Harvest - Sea Shepherd in the Faeroe Islands 1/3
Documentation of whaling activities in the Faeroe Islands chronicled in the BBC documentary Black Harvest. This massacre continues today. www.seashepherd.org In July of 1986, the Sea Shepherd II departs for the Danish Faeroe Islands to document and obstruct the Faeroese pilot whale sport hunt. Captain Watson sends in a team of five crewmembers to meet with the government. All five are arrested and held without charges. The Sea Shepherd II refuses to depart from Faeroese waters until the crew is released. The Faeroese respond by attacking with rifle fire and tear gas. Captain Watson has a bullet strike the ship an inch from his head, and immediately he orders the crew of the Sea Shepherd II to defend the ship with water cannons and cannons loaded with chocolate and lemon pie-filling. The Faeroese attackers are humiliatingly slimed with goo and the Sea Shepherd II escapes with documentation of whaling activities and a dramatic confrontation. The incident is filmed and aired in a BBC produced award-winning documentary entitled Black Harvest.

China News - August 22, 2012: Disputed Islands in the East China Sea
In today's China news, a boat carrying seven Chinese activists returned to Hong Kong after it sailed to disputed islands in the East China Sea. China knows the uninhabited isles as the Diaoyu Islands, the Japanese as the Senkaku Islands, and the Taiwanese as the Tiaoyutai On Monday, Taiwanese president Ma Ying-joeh spoke with Japanese media about the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu/Tiaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea. On Tuesday, the Foreign Correspondents' Club of China, along with the FCC's of Hong Kong and Shanghai, released a statement saying they were (quote) "extremely concerned" over incidents of foreign journalists being "threatened, harassed, or even beaten" while reporting in China. Over the last two weeks, two news stories have really captured the attention of Chinese netizens. One was of course the trial and verdict of Gu Kailai. The other is the shooting death of fugitive Zhou Kehua. Workers at Foxconn in Shenzhen China jokingly called the factory that produces iPhones and iPads, "Mordor." After 14 workers committed suicide by leaping off the building, the factory fell under scrutiny for abusing workers. Now, the factory has put improvements in place, but not all workers are happy about the changes. Back in the middle of June, local media in Tibet announced plans for a touring company to conduct boat tours on Yamdrok Lake in southern Tibet. Tibetans consider all of their lakes to be holy, and Yamdrok Lake even more so. It's one of the three holy lakes where ...

Shima Uta - Natsukawa Rimi
English: The deigo flower has blossomed, and it has called the wind, and the storm has arrived. The deigo flowers are in full bloom, and they have called the wind, and the storm has come. The repetition of sadness, like the waves that cross the islands. I met you in the Uji forest. In the Uji forest I bid farewell to Chiyo.Island Song, ride the wind, with the birds, cross the sea. Island song, ride the wind, carry my tears with you.The deigo blossoms have fallen, soft ocean waves tremble. Fleeting joy, like flowers carried by the waves. To my friend who sang in the Uji forest. Beneathe the Uji, bid farewell to Yachiyo.Island song, ride the wind, with the birds, cross the sea. Island song, ride the wind, carry my love with you.To the sea, to the universe, to God, to life, carry on this eternal dusk wind.Island Song, ride the wind, with the birds, cross the sea. Island song, ride the wind, carry my love with you.

Georgia Coast
On Georgia's Coast, Equitrekking's Emmy nominated host and equestrian travel expert Darley Newman experiences the thrill of beach riding on Sea Island, the wild horses of Cumberland Island, the hauntingly beautiful beaches of Jekyll Island and historic Savannah in an imported Viennese carriage. On Sea Island, viewers experience many people's dream of riding horses on the beach on a nature ride with naturalist Stacia Hendricks and try what the island native's call swim riding. On secluded Cumberland Island, Darley observes wild horses with naturalist Fred Whitehead. Whitehead has been living on Cumberland Island for over 25 years and has an intimate knowledge of herd dynamics, the history of horses on the island and how they survive in the subtropical environment. Darley stays at the island's only lodging, the historic Greyfield Inn and learns about the Carnegie family's role in the island's history. Next Darley visits Jekyll Island, where she rides through the remnants of an ancient maritime forest on Driftwood Beach. Darley strolls through the historic district to delve deeper into Jekyll's unique past.
