How Companies Win
The Way Your Company Won in the Past is Very Different than the Way it Will Win in the Future David Calhoun - CEO, The Nielsen Company Rick Kash - Chairman, The Cambridge Group The events of the past few years go well beyond the financial realities of a recession. The growth in emerging markets, the revolution in social media, and the changing consumer all combine to define a new economy. How companies will win in the future is going to be very different than how they've won in the past. The US and the rest of the developed world will face a business economy driven by three critical factors: * Global oversupply in virtually all manufacturing sectors * Flat to contracting demand for the next three to five years in the developed world * A systemic change in how consumer demand will be formed, communicated, aggregated and satisfied Dave Calhoun, CEO of Nielsen, and Rick Kash, the Chairman of The Cambridge Group, authors of How Companies Win, create a call to action as they outline the new business model for how companies will win today and tomorrow. They also define the new leadership role for marketing research and marketing as companies transform and adapt to the realities of the new demand economy and the primacy of demand. Don Norman at IIT Design Research Conference 2010
The Research-Practice Gulf
There is a great gulf between the research community and practice. Moreover, there is often a great gull between what designers do and what industry needs. We believe we know how to do design, but this belief is based more on faith than on data, and this belief reinforces the gulf between the research community and practice.
I find that the things we take most for granted are seldom examined or questioned. As a result, it is often our most fundamental beliefs that are apt to be wrong.
In this talk, deliberately intended to be controversial. I examine some of our most cherished beliefs. Examples: design research helps create breakthrough products; complexity is bad and simplicity good; there is a natural chain from research to product.
Don Norman was recently named by Business Week as "one of the world's most influential designers." Although he is not a designer, his studies and books on design theory coupled with his extensive academic and industry experience help companies produce enjoyable and effective products and services. Norman brings a systems approach to design, arguing that great design must touch every aspect of a company. He is well known for his classic books “The Design of Everyday Things” and “Emotional Design” “The well-rounded product,” says Norman, “will enhance the heart as well as the mind, being a joy to behold as well as to use.” He is the co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, professor at Northwestern University and has been Vice President of Apple Computer and an executive at Hewlett Packard. His next book. Living with Complexity, will be published in September 2010. here he argues that the quest for simplicity is misguided because complexity is both good and necessary: our lives are complex, and our tools must match the tasks we do. What we need are things we can understand and master, for once mastered, even complex-looking things are simple.

UNDER THE SKIN: define gender, if you can.
Being a transgender woman in Denmark. Being a woman in Denmark. Simply being.
Århus\Copenhagen (Denmark) October-December 2009
all the interviews have been freshly gathered, and all the audio tracks have been given to me by my subjects after listening to them togheter in their places.
Three women.
Betina Hvejsel was born 46 years ago in Denmark. She was born biologically as a male.
From age 12 to age 32 she developed more and more consciousness of her gender: there
was a reason if she didn't liked male games and jokes, if her behaviour and interests
always tended to emulate the female stereotype, it females clothing always seemed to her
more suitable to her body and mind. She is a woman, trapped in a male's body.
Her life had a significant turn toward happiness when she started her transition 4 years
ago, starting with hormones treatment 2 and half years ago. Like many others in her same
condition she has not been helped by danish healthcare system that refused to provide
her the chemical/surgical solution to her problem. She is considered to be a "transvestic
fetishist": a mentally ill person with some sexual perversion. And not someone whose inner
gender does not match the biological sex. Despite this she has found a doctor that wanted
to help her, and now she lives a quiet family life surrounded by the ones she loves and
running a successful company of web services. She lives together with her wife Bodil, and
their three daughters, one of which is Betina's daughter from a previous marriage as a
man, and the other two from Bodil's previous marriage.
"Our society is strictly binary: we are females or males. We don't have anything in
between. And, actually, I don't feel in between. I feel like a woman. And people stare at me
and say you dress like a woman, your hair are like woman's ones, you've tits... well you
actually look like a woman... but you can't be a woman. And I can't be a woman because
all is taken back for the laws and the doctors to sexuality, but has nothing to do with that.
We are experiencing the same that homosexual have in the past. We are not mentally ill,
and like them, we can't be cured, we are what we are. I am lucky an I have a good life. A
nice wife and kids that love me for who I am, but still I feel I lack something, I am not
complete. And this is visible when I take a bath or I go to the toilet or situation like this...
than I have an issue with that. But in everyday life I am just a normal woman with an
ordinary family".
Samantha Kalman was born 27 years ago in Seattle. She was born biologically as a
male. She moved some years ago to Copenhagen to work for a computer games
company, were she still works as a game software tester. For long time she tried
everything she could to make her long term relationship with her fianceè work out, but
nothing seemed to work, and she was depressed and living almost as an hermit. But a
certain moment she understood the cause of her sadness to be her gender. So, about two
years and an half ago, she started to live as a woman part-time, cross-dressing, and this
lead to the decision of living full-time as the woman she is. None of her friends or her
family members put her aside, and everybody, also in her working place, is supporting and
respectful. At present time she has been 10 months on hormones therapy but, as she has
been rejected by the Danish Sexual Clinic from the diagnoses of "gender disphoria" she
has to refer to her American private doctor to get her drugs.
"Before starting the transition the idea of living as a woman was only a fantasy, I always
had this kind of idea that I might wake up one day and just magically have turned into a
woman and look in the mirror and see those beautiful face and body that I couldn't
recognize. Of course this was not the reality. It took me a long time after I started my
transition to naturally see a woman in the mirror when I look at it. But I do now. And I am
so happy with the way my life is."
Victoria Nielsen was born 46 years ago in Denmark. She was born biologically as a male.
At age 17 she joined Danish army, working in several abroad missions as an artificer. In
the meanwhile of her career, she got a degree in Psychology and one in Theology. When
she became a father she got an early retirement from the army, due to a work accident.
Her daughter Rose was born in 2002 but, due to her mother's mental illness, the girl was
given to an orphanage and Victoria was recognized as her father only two years later.
From 2008 she is not allowed to see her at all, when before she could visit her twice in a
month, at the place where she lives with her foster family since she was 4. At the present
time she's on a trial to have her custody. It's three years that she is transitioning, and has
to refer to a private doctor to get hormones be

Moyers & Company Show 139: Hispanic America's Turn
According to the 2010 census, the number of American Hispanics grew 43% in the last decade to over 50 million. By 2050, Hispanics are projected to number 132 million and represent 30% of the population. As that population evolves, so does their political power. A new report by the Pew Hispanic Center shows that since 2008, America’s Latino voting population has grown 22% since 2008. But what are the cultural and political implications of these now well-understood statistics?
Bill goes beyond the numbers with two of our nation’s most popular and influential journalists: Univision’s Jorge Ramos and María Elena Salinas. A Spanish-language U.S. television network, Univision has the largest audience of Spanish-language television viewers, according to Nielsen ratings.
Ramos, says The Washington Monthly, is "the broadcaster who will most determine the 2012 elections," while The New York Times calls Salinas "the voice of Hispanic America." In a candid and comprehensive discussion, Ramos and Salinas discuss their responsibilities both as reporters and representatives of their culture, their aggressive journalistic approaches to both President Obama and Governor Romney, and their strong takes on immigration issues that mean so much to a potentially-decisive voting bloc in 2012.
Also, on the show, Bill shares the story of a young fallen solider and the Republican congressman he inspired to ask, "Why are we killing kids that don’t need to die?”

Storyboard - 4th August 2012 - Part 1- NDTV sues TAM
NDTV has sued Nielsen and a host of other companies that own and operate TAM in India. They have claimed damages to the tune of over 1.3 billion dollars on charges of fraud and negligence and have filed the case in the New York State Supreme Court claiming violations of the US law - Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The most damaging charge by NDTV is the fact that TAM employees were willing to tamper with peoplemeter data and manipulate ratings in return for money. Companies including TAM, The Nielsen Company; Kantar Media Research, WPP, JWT and IMRB have been named as defendants. Some individuals including David Calhoun the global CEO of the Nielsen Company have also been named.
