Carl Sagan's Cosmos: Dutch Golden Age (1/3)
"The world is my country, science my religion" - Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) Excerpt from Carl Sagan's legendary 'Cosmos' series. Sagan discusses the period in Dutch history that is known as the "Dutch Golden Age" (roughly spanning the 17th century). During and after the war of independence ('the Eighty Years' War' (1568-1648)) against the Spanish empire, the Dutch Republic experienced its own Enlightenment which left a profound mark on modern civilization. Amongst the countless revolutionary Dutch inventions from this period are the microscope, telescope, the stock exchange, and the first publicly traded multinational corporation (Dutch East India Company). This period also produced some of the world's most famous painters like, eg, Rembrandt and Vermeer. Great books on the Dutch Republic are Jonathan Israel's 'The Dutch Republic' and 'Radical Enlightenment'. Simon Schama's 'The Embarrassment of Riches' is also a fantastic read. en.wikipedia.org

Dutch Water Defence 1 / 2
The Dutch Water Line (Dutch: Hollandsche Waterlinie) was a series of water based defences conceived by Maurice of Nassau in the early 17th century, and realised by his half brother Frederick Henry. Combined with natural bodies of water, it could be used to transform the economic heartland of the Dutch Republic almost into an island. RoccProduction.. Early in the Eighty Years' War of Independence against Spain the Dutch had realized that flooding low lying areas formed an excellent defence against enemy troops, as was demonstrated, for example, during the siege of Leiden, 1574. In the latter half of the war when the economic heartland of the Dutch Republic (ie the province of Holland) had been freed of Spanish troops. Maurice of Orange Nassau planned to protect it with a line of flooded land protected by fortresses that ran from the Zuiderzee (present IJsselmeer) down to the river Waal. In 1629 prince Frederick Henry started the execution of the plan. Sluices were constructed in dikes and forts and fortified towns were created at strategic points along the line with guns covering especially the dikes that traversed the water line. The water level in the flooded areas was carefully maintained to a level deep enough to make an advance on foot precarious and shallow enough to rule out effective use of boats (other than the flat bottomed gun barges used by the Dutch defenders). Under the water level additional obstacles like ditches, trous de loup and later barbed wire and ...

The Anglo-Dutch Wars: 1667 Raid on Medway
The British historian Andrew Lambert on one of the monumental battles in 17th century Europe and the Anglo-Dutch naval and cultural heritage. The Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter, who led the attack on the English fleet, is still honoured and revered in the Netherlands as one of its greatest heroes. In 1676 De Ruyter died in battle at the age of 69.

It is abomination: The Bible versus the Homosexual Agenda
Bible-believing Christians have been mocked, despised, outlawed, imprisoned, tortured, and even murdered throughout the centuries. Despite pagan, Catholic, Muslim, and atheistic governments that have existed throughout history (and still exist today), Bible-believing Christians worked to establish the only republics which have ever allowed freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion. The freedom of the Dutch Republic was but one example of how Bible-believers ended the Dark Ages and gave birth to modern civilization. The Calvinist Dutch Republic provided freedom and protection to atheists like Spinoza, to those fleeing the Roman Catholic Inquisition, and so on. The United States' own constitution was based in part on the constitution of the Dutch Republic. Our Founding Fathers were not only Calvinistic, but they embraced (and even developed) the political and economic thought of the Protestant Reformation. The United States Constitution forbids Congress to make any laws inhibiting freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. Even so, the homosexual agenda is working hard to overturn our freedom of speech and our religious freedom in the United States. The homosexual agenda is an agenda of tyranny: it is not opposed to "hate speech," but to FREE SPEECH. The truth is, the first amendment protects all forms of "love speech," "sad speech," "economic speech," "religious speech," "political speech," and even the so ...

the Low Countries a historical atlas in motion
The developement of the Low or Benelux countries from 1543 to the present depicted in a moving historical atlas. Green stands for the Habsburg Netherlands (later reduced to the Southern Netherlands) and modern Belgium. Orange stands for the rebelious Union of Utrecht that developed into the Dutch Republic or United Provinces, later the Batavian Republic (1795-1805), the Kingdom of Holland (1805-1810), the Sovereign Principality of the United Netherlands (1813-1815) that in 1815 became the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The red borderline is the border of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (until 1806) and later the border of the German Confederation (1815-1866). The War of Kalmar
England and the Dutch Republic were also invested in the Baltic Sea trade, and pressured to curtail Denmark's power by ending the Kalmar War before a decisive victory could be attained. The Danes, while well-equipped and strong, had relied heavily on mercenary forces and Christian IV, low on funds, was finally amenable to persuasion in 1613. With Englands intercession, the Treaty of Knäred was signed on January 20, 1613. Denmark reached its victory, restoring Norwegian control of Sweden's land route through Lapland by incorporating Lapland into Norway (and thus under Danish rule). Further, Sweden had to pay a high ransom for two fortresses captured by Denmark. Sweden, however, achieved a major concession — the right of free trade through the Sound Strait, becoming exempt of the Sound toll. Although a side-note to the war, the Battle of Kringen, in which Scottish mercenary forces were defeated by Gudbrandsdal militiamen from Lesja, Dovre, Vaage (Vågå), Fron, Lom and Ringebu is a noted military event in Norway, celebrated to

"Dali, Tarkovski, Bunuel, Deren ... Add Don Askarian to the ranks of this dream team. "Askarian is capable of producing images that are unlike anything ever seen before, yet hit you with a primal immediacy".Giovanni Fazio, "The Japan Times" 25 March, 1995
Don Askarian
is a prize-winner at several international film festivals. In 1996 Don Askarian published his book "The Dangerous Light". Every year the interest to his really very unique films grow up. More and more film festivals come to honor Don Askarian with retrospectives. Serious TV-stations like ARD, WDR, ZDF, Channel 4, Arte, but also Belgian, Greek, Swiss, Slovakian, Armenian etc. TV Channels are constant co-producers and buyers of all his films. The films of Don Askarian were sold and broadcasted world wide about 100 times. Don Askarian, honored with a Harvard Film Archive retrospective, is considered the greatest Armenian filmmaker (but he is Russian-German- Dutch too). In 2004 he received Golden Camera Award for Life Achievement at Int. ART Film Festival, Slovakia. It turns out to be clearer what Hans-Werner Dannowski, the president of Interfilm, meant in 1992: "Time will pass until we recognize that Don Askarian is one of the most important filmmakers of our times. His movies will take up the time they need. Finally the films will have their success not with lies and assimilations but with truth." The retrospectives and special screenings around the world, on TV and important film festivals reflect it, mirror the growing interest in Don Askarian's films followed by a broad fascination by the audience.

Decadance team s potěšením oznamuje taneční lahůdku jarní sezóny roku 2011! Produkce této vyhlášené a nadšeně přijímané akce přichází s úplně novým konceptem eventu pro milovníky aktuální trance music. Přichází s novou krví do žil české taneční scény, přichází s novou TRANCEFUSION!
Nový formát si žádá taktéž nový prostor. Velký, ale ne obrovský. Vstřícný, variabilní i reprezentativní . V centru toho všeho však bude sál plný taneční a hudební euforie, podporované skvělou zvukovou, světelnou a vizuální show, tedy toho, co umíme nejlépe - speciálními dekoracemi, mnoha překvapivými performaceni a tanečnicemi v úchvatných kostýmech.
Po dlouhé době Praha přivítá světem protřelé a trance publikem zbožňované duo producentů a remixérů několika skutečných hymen taneční scény COSMIC GATE z Německa.
To jméno zní MYON & SHANE 54. Duo producentů z Maďarska předvádí těžk

Samsung Wave
When Media Republic came to us for a TVC promoting the Wave phone, Samsungs latest creation, we jumped at the chance. Seeing as Samsung has a rich history of TVCs, we set out to differentiate ours from the commercials that usually play out on dutch national television by devising a dark tale of conception. The concept consisted of the phone, breaking free of a seabed of silicon-like rock formations, and travelling upwards towards the light of day, emerging out of the sea.
We were given complete freedom by Samsung - the USPs (unique selling points) of the phone needed to be communicated somehow, but that was it. The two of us created and delivered the TVC in a record-breaking time of three weeks, and we are still catching up on sleep. The wonderful soundtrack was made by Joris van Grunsven (studio Takt), and the rockbed was detailed in 3D by the talented Maxim Fleury.
This is our favorite version - the aired original was cut down to 25 seconds, and features a dutch voice over emphasizing the USPs.

Holland
Holland is a name in common usage given to a region in the western part of the Netherlands. The name 'Holland' is also often informally used to refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands. From the 10th century to the 16th century Holland proper was a unified political region, a county ruled by the Count of Holland. By the 17th century, Holland had risen to become a maritime and economic power, dominating the other provinces of the Dutch Republic. Today, the former County of Holland consists of the two Dutch provinces of North Holland and South Holland, which together include the Netherlands' three largest cities: country capital Amsterdam, seat of government The Hague, and Rotterdam, home of Europe's largest port.
