On July 10th, Vice President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama visited the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York City for his first public presentation of his new memoir, "My First Coup'D'Etat" and other True Stories From the Lost Decades of Africa. The book is Mahama's first publication and takes an inside look at his experience growing up in the period he terms "Africa's Lost Decade" From the 1960s-1980s Africa suffered numerous coups, saw the rise of murderous and corrupt dictators and weathered economic turmoil. Mahama began the evening reading an excerpt from the book that detailed his memories of when Ghana's first president Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown in a coup in 1966. Vice President Mahama, whose National Democratic Party is standing for re-election this coming December along with current President John Evans Atta Mills, talked about how Ghana has emerged from the lost decades and is experiencing a renaissance. After a Q&A; session with the audience, Vice President Mahama hosted a book signing and interacted with members of the Ghanaian community in Harlem. Mahama, who grew up with 18 siblings in Northern Ghana, was joined on stage with several of his siblings who he features endearingly in his memoir. But he acknowledged that after his book writing, the Ghanaian campaign trail is calling.

Ghana (Republika Ghany, ang. Republic of Ghana) – państwo w zachodniej Afryce nad Oceanem Atlantyckim. Graniczy z Togo, Burkina Faso i Wybrzeżem Kości Słoniowej. Nazwa kraju w języku Asante oznacza "Król - Wojownik". Pochodzi od przedkolonialnego, średniowiecznego Imperium Ghany, które jednak rozciągało się na terenach dzisiejszego Mali i Mauretanii. Handel z Europejczykami został po raz pierwszy nawiązany już w XV w., natomiast przedkolonialne królestwo Aszanti zachowało niepodległość aż do roku 1870, w którym to zostało skolonizowane przez Wielką Brytanię. Niepodległość odzyskała w roku 1957.

Ghana jest republiką należącą do Wspólnoty Narodów (od 1957 r.). Na czele państwa stoi prezydent (obecnie John Atta-Mills), który ma władzę wykonawczą. Parlament Ghany jest jednoizbowy i zdominowany przez 2 partie - Nowa Partia Patriotyczna oraz Narodowy Kongres Demokratyczny. Kofi Annan, były sekretarz generalny ONZ pochodzi z Ghany.

Ghana leży nad Zatoką Gwinejską, kilka stopni na północ od równika. Występuje tam klimat równikowy. Najwyższa góra Ghany to Mount Afadjato (880 m). Na terenie tego kraju znajduje się Jezioro Wolta - największe pod względem powierzchni sztuczne jezioro na świecie. Główna rzeka to Wolta.

Eksport ziarna kakaowego stanowi 35% wartości eksportu, jest czołowym światowym producentem tego surowca. Dla potrzeb miejscowych, uprawia się: owoce cytrusowe, ryż, tytoń, kukurydzę, maniok, trzcinę cukrową, bawełnę, proso, bataty, pochrzyn, warzywa... Od niedawna rośnie rola przemysłu ciężkiego, głównie związanego z górnictwem. Hoduje się kozy, owce, trzodę chlewną i bydło. Rozwinięte rybołówstwo.

John Dramani Mahama (ur. 29 listopada 1958 w Damongo) – ghański polityk i historyk, deputowany do parlamentu w latach 1997-2009, minister komunikacji od 1998 do 2001. Wiceprezydent w latach 2009-2012. Prezydent Ghany od 24 lipca 2012, po śmierci Johna Atta-Millsa.

[edytuj] Edukacja i początki kariery zawodowej
John Dramani Mahama urodził się w 1958 w Damongo w Regionie Północnym. Jego ojciec, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, był deputowanym do Parlamentu Ghany oraz komisarzem regionalnym Regionu Północnego po uzyskaniu przez kraj niepodległości w 1957. Uczęszczał do szkoły Achimota School w Dystrykcie Stołecznym Akra. Następnie studiował na Uniwersytecie Ghany, uzyskując w 1981 tytuł licencjacki z dziedziny historii. W 1986 ukończył podyplomowe studia z zakresu komunikacji, po czym wyjechał na stypendium do Instytutu Nauk Społecznych w Moskwie[1].
Po zakończeniu nauki powrócił do Ghany i w latach 1991-1996 pracował jako urzędnik ds. informacji, kultury i badań w Ambasadzie Japonii w Akrze. Następnie pracował jako menedżer ds. stosunków międzynarodowych w pozarządowej organizacji Plan International[1].

W grudniu 1996 Dramani Mahama po raz pierwszy uzyskał mandat deputowanego do Parlamentu Ghany w okręgu Bole-Bamboi z ramienia Narodowego Kongresu Demokratycznego (NDC). Objął go oficjalnie 7 stycznia 1997. W kwietniu 1997 objął stanowisko wiceministra komunikacji w rządzie prezydenta Jerry'ego Johna Rawlingsa, które zajmował do listopada 1998. Od listopada 1998 do stycznia 2001 pełnił funkcję ministra komunikacji. Jako minister brał udział w pracach nad nowymi regulacjami z zakresie usług telekomunikacyjnych po deregulacji tego rynku w 1997. Był również jednym z założycieli Komisji ds. AIDS oraz wiceprzewodniczącym komitetu ds. wprowadzenia podatku VAT[1].
W wyborach parlamentarnych w 2000 oraz w 2004 ponownie uzyskał reelekcję. W parlamencie zasiadał do 7 stycznia 2009. W czasie, gdy NDC przebywał w opozycji (2001-2009), był początkowo rzecznikiem partii ds. komunikacji (2001-2004), a następnie rzecznikiem ds. spraw zagranicznych (2005-2009). W 2002 wszedł w skład zespołu międzynarodowych obserwatorów monitorujących wybory prezydenckie w Zimbabwe. W 2003 został deputowanym do Parlamentu Panafrykańskiego[1].
W wyborach w grudniu 2008 ubiegał się o stanowisko wiceprezydenta u boku Johna Atta-Millsa. Po jego zwycięstwie, 9 stycznia 2009 objął urząd. 24 lipca 2012, po śmierci Atta-Millsa, zgodnie z konstytucją został zaprzysiężony na stanowisku prezydenta kraju[1]. 30 sierpnia 2012 został wybrany kandydatem NDC w wyborach prezydenckich zaplanowanych na grudzień 2012[2].
