Dad was a WW II and Korean War Veteran. I post this for the benefit of all who will never see or experience this. Words cannot describe the honor and reverence demonstrated by these men who devote so much of their lives to sending off their fallen comrades. These men truly stand on higher ground. Myself and everyone else I know can only aspire to come as close as we can to living and feeling as these men do. US Navy and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) demonstrate what Honor REALLY IS all about. Currently, WW II Vets are dying at the rate of 555 per day. Chances are - most of us will be alive to see the last one go. My Dad was an avid Ham radio operator for many years and a member of the Radio Club of Tacoma where he taught code to the members so they could achieve their amateur license. He was always rigging antennas wherever he lived. He repaired radios and TVs for the townsfolk of Steilacoom, WA. where he was the town barber for many years. I will now use YouTube to sign off with his call letters for the final time .... WA7 OHG over and out.

The family of CAPT Robert Ellsworth Thomas Jr. has invited the Patriot Guard Riders to attend the service of their Hero, it will be our honor to do so. Captain Thomas served in the U.S. Navy from June, 1937 until his honorable discharge Feb, 1964. He began his Navy career at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, 4 years later, after graduation, in Feb, 1941, he began active duty as an Ensign on board the USS Nevada. His job was to command the seven starboard side 5" guns. On the morning of Dec 7, 1941 the USS Nevada was in Pearl Harbor and was moored immediately behind the USS Arizona when General Quarters were sounded. He was thrown 20 feet when the Arizona exploded, and immediately scrambled back to manning his guns. As a result of his non relenting action against the Japanese planes, hitting at least one of them, even after being wounded himself when a Japanese dive-bomber sent a bomb through the deck within feet of him, he was awarded the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart. Captain Thomas later served as a Public Works Officer at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before going to the Naval War College in the fall of 1962. Captain Thomas' class devised the Cuban Blockade plan implemented by President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. When Captain Thomas retired from the Navy in 1964 he worked as the Director of Building Services for Orange County, CA. In 1968, he was promoted as Orange County's first County Administrative Officer (CAO) before retiring in Feb, 1986. Captain Thomas enjoyed his retirement years, he loved to play golf and had a 7 handicap for many years. He also flew light aircraft with his private license, he and his wife Carol flew all over the U.S. He also took up riding a motorcycle and owned several Hondas, traveling all over the Western U.S. with his son, Major Robert E. Thomas III, USMC(Ret), who also rides. Captain Thomas' wife Carol predeceased him in 1982, he is survived by 3 children, Helen, Robert III, and Lynn, also 8 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. March 18, 2014 - President Barack Obama awarded 24 Army veterans with the Medal of Honor in White House ceremony. Each of these Soldiers' bravery was previously recognized by award of the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest award, which was upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Congressional review and the 2002 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) prompted a review of Jewish American and Hispanic American veteran war records from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. During the review, records of several Soldiers of neither Jewish nor Hispanic descent were found to display criteria worthy of the Medal of Honor. The 2002 NDAA was amended to allow these Soldiers to be honored with the upgrade in addition to the Jewish and Hispanic American Soldiers. The ceremony recognized these 24 men for their gallantry, intrepidity and heroism above and beyond the call of duty. Living Veterans (Vietnam War) Honored: Specialist Four Santiago J. On Wednesday, 4 MARCH 2015, the PGR will join with the California National Guard Honor Team in rendering honors to those American Heroes brought to Riverside National Cemetery during this past week without receiving their honors. They are not alone, we are their family. “If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days, Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say, Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.” NOTE: This mission posting is to facilitate your voluntary participation in honoring these Military Veterans. noodls 2015-03-30A military funeral is a specially orchestrated funeral given by a country's military for a soldier, sailor, marine or airman who died in battle, a veteran, or other prominent military figures or heads of state. A military funeral may feature guards of honor, the firing of volley shots as a salute, drumming and other military elements, with a flag draping over the coffin. On occasion, deceased soldiers have been accorded military funerals by their enemies (for example, see Manfred von Richthofen).
In the United States, the United States Army Military District of Washington (MDW) is responsible for providing military funerals. "Honoring Those Who Served" is the title of the program for instituting a dignified military funeral with full honors to the nation's veterans.
As of January 1, 2000, Section 578 of Public Law 106-65 of the National Defense Authorization Act mandates that the United States Armed Forces shall provide the rendering of honors in a military funeral for any eligible veteran if requested by his or her family. As mandated by federal law, an honor guard detail for the burial of an eligible veteran shall consist of no less than two members of the Armed Forces. One member of the detail shall be a representative of the parent armed service of the deceased veteran. The honor guard detail will, at a minimum, perform a ceremony that includes the folding and presenting of the flag of the United States to the next of kin and the playing of Taps which will be played by a lone bugler, if available, or by audio recording. Today, there are so few buglers available that the United States Armed Forces often cannot provide one. However, federal law allows Reserve and National Guard units to assist with funeral honors duty when necessary.
Samuel "Sam" Houston (March 2, 1793–July 26, 1863), was a nineteenth-century American statesman, politician, and soldier. He was born in Timber Ridge in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, of Scots-Irish descent. Houston became a key figure in the history of Texas and was elected as the first and third President of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator for Texas after it joined the United States, and finally as a governor of the state. He refused to swear loyalty to the Confederacy when Texas seceded from the Union in 1861 with the outbreak of the American Civil War, and was removed from office. To avoid bloodshed, he refused an offer of a Union army to put down the Confederate rebellion. Instead, he retired to Huntsville, Texas, where he died before the end of the Civil War.
His earlier life included migration to Tennessee from Virginia, time spent with the Cherokee Nation (into which he later was adopted as a citizen and took a wife), military service in the War of 1812, and successful participation in Tennessee politics. Houston is the only person in U.S. history to have been the governor of two different states (although other men had served as governors of more than one American territory).
