Lakota Lesson 1: The Silent Way
Start here to try the Silent Way of learning Lakota/Dakota. You'll see a situation where the meaning is more or less apparent to you. Now start using the Lakota words to express the meaning you already know. Remember too, the Silent Way was used in New Zealand to jump start the revitalization of Maori. Their revitalization didn't begin with the "language nests" for preschool children; it began with Maori adults who found they quickly learned to speak their language this way. The energy released by this learning led them to develop the "language nests" so the children didn't have to experience Native language loss as they had.

KFYR News Lakota Berenstain Bears Premier 09/14/11
`Berenstain Bears` First Cartoon to be Recorded in Lakota We all remember reading the "Berenstain Bears" as kids and now the popular series is being translated into Lakota. It`s the first animated cartoon series to ever be presented entirely in a Native American language. The "Lakota Berenstain Bears" is airing this month on PBS. It`sa joint venture of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Lakota Language Consortium and was recorded right here in Bismarck. Voices from Standing Rock, Cheyenne River, Pine Ridge and Rosebud are helping revitalize the Lakota language and local dialects. "It`s important. Our language is on the verge of extinction, so I want to have the people to have an open mind and try to promote our language and the `Berenstain Bears` is a great opportunity to get the kids excited to see it," said Kenny Little Thunder, voice of Cousin Freddie. They got permission from Berenstain Enterprises to translate 20 episodes and the entire project took about a year. "We got a group of actors together and we took it to Makoche studios here in Bismarck and they helped us record the dialogue and so that`s how we came out with the "Berenstain Bears" in Lakota and it turned out pretty good," said Ben Black Bear, who is the voice of multiple character. Some of the actors are instructors have spoke the language all their lives and are known as speakers. Voice of multiple characters Manny Iron Hawk said: "It was an awesome experience. I`ve never been in a studio and it was ...

Lakota Lesson 9: Sound Game Two
A few more Lakota sounds...combined into Lakota words. This is all about making Lakota sounds and getting comfortable doing it. Some sounds are like English sounds but the combinations of sounds are different. Some sounds aren't English sounds, but your tongue and throat have to become just as comfortable with them as with your first language. If you don't, the sounds are 'foreign' sounds, and no one ever speaks a language that is 'foreign'.
