Rita MacNeil, CM, ONS (May 28, 1944 – April 16, 2013) was a Canadian country and folk singer from the community of Big Pond on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island. Her biggest hit, "Flying On Your Own", was a crossover Top 40 hit in 1987 and was covered by Anne Murray the following year, although she had hits on the country charts throughout her career. In the United Kingdom, MacNeil's song "Working Man" was a No. 11 hit in 1990.
In 1990, she was the bestselling country artist in Canada, outselling even Garth Brooks and Clint Black. She was also the only female singer ever to have three separate albums chart in the same year in Australia.
Throughout her career MacNeil would receive five Honorary degrees, release 24 albums, win three Juno Awards, four CCMA awards, eleven ECMA awards, be inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame and be named to the Order of Nova Scotia and the Order of Canada.

We were walking down Broadway looking for a good place to sit down and get some food to hold us over until dinner time. As we passed the Honkey Tonks Bar and Grill, an amazing voice and large crowd compelled us to stop in and see who could possibly gain such an audience. We couldn't be more surprised to find Marisa McKay performing on stage. She deserves to be a star with that voice!

Anne Murray and Rita MacNeil unite in a lovely duet. Rita MacNeil's biggest hit, "Flying On Your Own", was a crossover Top 40 hit in 1987 and was covered by legendary Anne Murray the following year. "Rita had many, many obstacles to overcome," said Murray. "It shows the strength of her character that she was able to achieve all the success that she did." Although the two women had the same manager, Leonard Rambeau, they didn't meet until the early 1990s when MacNeil and the Rankin Family were guests on a television special Murray was filming in Halifax [the above video is an excerpt from this special]. "She was so sweet and humble" Murray remembered, but "she was so nervous, she was throwing up. I always do my best to make people as comfortable as possible and I thought I was really g...
I waited the whole concert to capture this ... and I was not disappointed. Working Man is the kind of song that reminds me so much of my father's arduous life (the other like it is the song Factory) ... and the choir and Shane McLeod's amazing voice add so much to the song. It's hard not to get a lump in your throat when hearing this. I shot this on the Panasonic ZS3 (TZ7), which is a compact camera with a fairly long zoom. I mastered this in Sony Movie Studio and cleaned up the audio as best as I could, considering that it was recorded from far stage left in the first row I believe.

"Everbody" Written and sung by Rita MacNeil in 1986. She also performed this song in the movie "Candy Mountain" from 1988. This is just one of the hundreds of songs that she wrote and performed. In my opinion, this Canadian singer was one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. This performance is from 1991, and was performed in Edinburgh Scotland. I do not own the rights to this song or video.

This beautiful performance, by Rita MacNeil, was filmed in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1991, at the Usher Hall Theater. "Steal Me Away" was just one of the over 200 songs she wrote and performed. This iconic Canadian singer was one of the very best singer/songwriters of all time. Sadly, she passed away, at the age of 68, in April of 2013. Now, she is singing with the angels. I do not own the copyrights to this song or video.

Canada's lost one of its great voices: Cape Breton country and folk singer Rita MacNeil has died. She was 68. According to a statement from her publicist, she passed away April 16 following complications from surgery. She was known as Cape Breton's first lady of song - but she didn't start out as a confident performer. In fact, she was so notoriously shy that she didn't come into her own as a singer until a little later in life: at 42, she won a Juno Award for most promising female artist. But once she got off the ground, no one could stop her flying on her own. We were lucky and honoured to meet and interview Nova Scotia music Royalty, Rita MacNeil, at the historical Savoy Theatre - Cape Breton in October of 2012 during the Celtic Colours International Festival. She reflected on her career, and gave us a taste of her naturally inspirational attitude for the success of women, youth, and artists alike. We were star-struck and humbled by her kindness and genuineness.
http://www.cbc.ca/strombo/ When Robb Wells, John Paul Tremblay and Mike Smith (aka Ricky, Julian and Bubbles, the Trailer Park Boys) were in the red chair, they talked about working with Rita MacNeil on an episode of the show. The boys really enjoyed working with her - even if it was hard to stay in character and keep swearing when she was around. Rita MacNeil passed away on April 16, 2013. Rita MacNeil tells about some of her past struggles she faced before Stardom. Amazing, that she accomplished as much as she did during her career. She wrote, and sang, over 200 of her own songs, had 24 albums, some of which she produced herself, produced a television show titled "Rita and Friends," from 1994 to 1997, and won numerous awards that are still displayed in her tea room in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Her numerous Christmas specials were pure heaven to watch, and the true meaning of Christmas really shined through in them. I do own the rights to this video.
Mon, Apr 22: If there was one woman who was true to herself, it was Rita MacNeil. The Cape Breton singer was laid to rest in her hometown in a simple, modest service celebrating her life and music. Mike Armstrong reports. For more info, please go to http://www.globalnews.ca
