Japanese PM urges lawmakers for active diplomacy for summit talks with Seoul
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is urging lawmakers in Japan to lay the groundwork for a summit between Korea and Japan. Japan's national broadcaster NHK reported Wednesday that Abe called on Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Nukaga Fukushiro, a former finance minister, to ensure parliamentary members use every possible channel to push for summit talks. Abe reportedly made the comments at his official residency while discussing the trilateral summit talks that took part between Korea, Japan and the U.S. in the Hague in March. Fukushiro said that, while diplomatic ties with Seoul have soured, the two countries have a solid economic relationship. A private two-day Korea-Japan business meeting was held in Japan last week. Korean President Park Geun-hye and Abe, who both came to power early last year, have yet to hold a bilateral summit due to strained ties over historical and territorial issues.- published: 22 May 2014

S. Korean lawmakers protest over Japanese ministers' Yasukuni Shrine visits
South Korean lawmakers are in Japan to protest over the visit of some Japanese cabinet ministers to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which honors Japan's war dead, including 14 Class A war criminals of World War Two. The acting chairman of the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians's Union, Kim Tae-hwan and two other members arrived on Tuesday, and have met with the head of the Union, Japanese former finanace minister Fukushiro Nukaga. Kim said actions by some Japanese officials have brought about a backlash in South Korea. He referred to the Shrine visits by Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, other cabinet ministers and lawmakers. As well as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's remarks which seemingly deny past Japanese aggression. Kim also handed a letter to Nukaga about the issue. Last month, 4 Japanese cabinet members and 168 lawmakers visited the Yasukuni Shrine, provoking strong condemnations from China, South Korea and other neighboring countries in Asia.- published: 08 May 2013
