A Far Cry - Schnittke: Concerto Grosso no.1 (1977), V. Rondo: Agitato
Described by the Boston Globe as "Thrilling" "Brilliant" and "Intrepid", this concert footage comes from Boston's self-conducted chamber orchestra, A FAR CRY's 2009-10 season opener, "The Lunatic" at the inimitable Jordan Hall inside New England Conservatory. Alfred Schnittke's haunting first Concerto Grosso for 2 violins, harpsichord, prepared piano and 21 strings was performed on the night before Holloween. A Far Cry is joined by the Uh-Mazing violinists, Nelson Lee & Meg Freivogel of the decorated Jupiter Quartet as soloists, along with Andrus Madsen pulling a double guest duty on harpsichord & prepared piano. Filmed live on October 30th, 2009 & edited by Simon C. Yue for A Far Cry. To view this performance in its entirety, click here: vimeo.com

Schnittke - Variations on a Chord
Variations on a Chord (1965) According to Alexander Ivashkin: "Elements of polystylism can be heard in the Variations on a Chord which were written for Irina Schnittke, the composer's wife; it was she who gave the first performance of them in Moscow in June 1966. The main structural idea of the work was borrowed from the second movement of Webern's Piano Variations, Op. 27; each note of the row can be used only in the same octave that was selected at the start. At the same time the idea of contrasting, almost polystylistic, variations belong to Schnittke. The six variations are different in character. Sometimes they recall the ringing of bells (variation IV, Lento), a toccata in a Prokofiev-like style (variation III, Agitato), the impressionistic writing of Debussy (at the start of the piece), or the 'melodic cells' technique of Stravinsky in the spirit of his Les noces (variation II, Andante)."

Schnittke (Alfred); Seid nuchtern und wachet (Faust Cantata); VII. Es geschah (It came to pass)
In the cantata Seid nüchtern und wachet of 1983, a setting of the 16th-century History of Dr. Johann Faust, the gruesome scene of Faust's going-under is delivered by a Satanically amplified mezzo-soprano: in the BIS recording, Inger Blom presides over a hectic cabaret orchestra like some Ethel Merman of the apocalypse. It may not amount to "ordinary rock-music," as the composer intended, but it manages to dumbfound listeners all the same. This cantata, one of Schnittke's most viscerally thrilling pieces, will furnish material for an upcoming opera on Faust themes. ...quote from Alex Ross´s book " The Rest is Noise" This video is an extract from the BBC Feature " The Unreal World Of Alfred Schnittke Performed by Malmö Symphony Chorus, Malmö Symphony Orchestra with Inger Blom, Conducted by James DePreist

Alfred Schnittke: Cello Sonata no. 1 (1978)
I:Largo -- II. Presto -- III. Largo Devoid of the more flamboyant gestures of some of Schnittke's later music, this sonata shows a clear indebtedness to the clarity (and sometimes the irony) of Shostakovich. Its three sections are played without a pause; the brief, elegiac first movement and demonic second movement, ending in catastrophic collapse, are both revisited in the extended, dream-like finale. A definitive performance by Josef Lupták (cello) and Nora Skuta (piano), ar the 2012 Indian Summer in Levoca Festival
