The Marquis de Sade is locked in the Charenton mental hospital and decides to put on a play. His overseers agree as long as he follows certain conditions. He writes and directs the other mental patients in a play based on the life of the Jean-Paul Marat. As the play progresses, the inmates become more and more possessed by the violence of the play and become extremely difficult to control. Finally, all chaos breaks loose. Judy Collins 1966 recording of "Marat/Sade" has found new relevance in this year's Occupy Movement and Wall Street protests. "Why do they have the gold? Why do they have the power? Why, why, why, why, why do they have the friends at the top? Why do they have the jobs at the top?" "Marat/Sade," the 1963 play by Peter Weiss, is described on Wikipedia as "a bloody and unrelenting depiction of class struggle and human suffering which asks whether true revolution comes from changing society or changing oneself." Judy Collins recording is a medley of four songs composed for the play by Richard Peaslee: "Homage to Marat," "Marat We're Poor," "People's Reaction," and "Poor Old Marat." This recording, taken from Judy's landmark, "In My Life" album, was arranged and conducted by Joshua Rifkin. The black and white Elektra Records publicity photos of Judy were taken in 1966 by photographer Joel Brodsky.

In between the patients there is an Angel, the Angel of Death, smiling to all of us... Sinopsys The infamous Marquis de Sade has been imprisoned in the asylum of Charenton for endangering public morals. As a form of therapy the hospital's patients are allowed to take part in plays, and de Sade sets out to dramatize the death of the French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat, who was murdered in his bath. With its cast of sociopaths, schizophrenics, and narcoleptics, Marat/Sade is a wild celebration of insanity, a terrifying pageant bursting with color and music. After all, they are only fifteen years distant from the bloodiest days of the French revolution, and Napoleon's new empire is still making many of the same mistakes as the old. When in 1793, Marat called for the end of monarchies, a young nun, Charlotte Corday, came from the provinces to kill him.
