Arsenal (1929) - Alexander Dovzhenko - Clip 2
Available from mrbongo.com Soldiers return to Ukraine to find their homeland teeming with strife and dissension; gripped in a conflict between nationalist forces and communists. One faction of soldiers, led by Timosh (Semyon Svashenko) supports the communists and takes command of a munitions factory at Kiev, converting the weapons arsenal into a fortress. Still reeling from the trauma of war, Timosh and his comrades engage in a violent crusade that soon spreads across the Ukraine. A country of farms and villages gives way to killing fields. Modern warfare, with its guns, bombs and trenches scars a landscape rich in hundred years' worth of tradition. A "white hot war film" in Jonathan Rosenbaum's words, Arsenal is placed alongside Battleship Potemkin as the great revolutionary masterpiece of Soviet cinema. Its frank depiction of violence as well as its fantastic lyrical imagery established Dovzhenko as the least ideological and most experimental film-maker of his age. The reach of its influence stretches from the works of Sergei Parajanov to Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. Represents the summit of Soviet cinema and remains one of the most poetic and visually beautiful of all Russian films -- Chicago Tribune This ambitious film has evoked comparisons with Picasso's Guernica for its angry, compassionate, complex depiction of war and is full of unforgettable images -- The Guardian

1929 Izhevsk DRAGOON
This is a Mosin Nagant Dragoon model. It is nearly identical to the 91/30. It is a later production Dragoon. The different between a Dragoon and an ex-Dragoon is the sight system. This Dragoon rifle still retains the original Arshin style rear sight, with the blade front sight just like the M91. The Dragoon is a little bit shorter than an M91, and the same length as the ex-Dragoon, or 91/30. Every ex-Dragoon begins it's life as a Dragoon rifle. The way you can tell an ex-Dragoon and a 91/30 apart is simple. Observe the base of the rear sight, closest to the receiver. If there is a small gap between the sight base, and the top of the barrel, then it is an ex-Dragoon rifle. If there is no gap, then it is a 91/30. The other way is the rear sight. It will still be graduated in Arshins if it were a Dragoon. Many millions of Dragoon rifles were refurbed at the arsenal, and brought to 91/30 standards using the meter rear sight, with post and globe front sight. So if you have a rifle you think is an M91, and is the same length as the 91/30, it's a Dragoon rifle. Although, it is possible to still find 91/30s with blade front sights. They were used, but are an early style front sight. On 91/30s of early production, many could have had the blade front sight. It wasn't until later they were switched to post and globe front sights.

Hermann Oberth and Wherner Von Braun, meeting, June 24,1969
German audio, WIKIPEDIA CUTS INFO: In parts of 1928 and 1929, Oberth also worked in Berlin, Germany as a scientific consultant on the first film ever to have scenes set in outer space, Frau im Mond ("The Woman in the Moon"), which was directed and produced by the great film pioneer Fritz Lang at the Universum Film AG company. This film was of enormous value in popularizing the ideas of rocketry and space exploration. One of Oberth's main assignments was to build and launch a rocket as a publicity event just before the film's premiere. He also designed the model of the "Friede", the main rocket portrayed in the film. as a young boy, ca.1901. On June 5, 1929, Oberth won the first (Robert Esnault-Pelterie - André-Louis Hirsch) "Rep-Hirsch Prize" of the French Astronomical Society for the encouragement of astronautics in his book Wege zur Raumschiffahrt ("Ways to Spaceflight") that had expanded Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen to a full-length book.[7] In the autumn of 1929, Oberth conducted a static firing of his first liquid-fueled rocket motor, which he named the Kegeldüse. The engine was built by Klaus Riedel in a workshop space provided by the Reich Institution of Chemical Technology, and although it lacked a cooling system, it did run briefly.[8] He was helped in this experiment by an 18 year old student Wernher von Braun, who would later become a giant in both German and American rocket engineering from the 1940s onward, culminating with the gigantic Saturn V rockets ...

Sheffield Wednesday ~ We Are The Owls
Sheffield Wednesday Football Club is a football club based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, who competed in League One in the 2011--12 season, but will compete in The Championship in the 2012--13 season. Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest professional clubs in the world and the fifth oldest in the English league. They won the second ever football competition held, the Cromwell Cup, which remains in their possession. The Wednesday, as they were named until 1929, were founding members of The Football Alliance in 1889, and its first champions that inaugural season. The Wednesday joined The Football League three years later when the leagues merged. Sheffield Wednesday were also one of the founding members of The Premier League in 1992. Their main rivals are Sheffield United, the two clubs having contested the Steel City derby on a regular basis for some 100 years. Hull City, Barnsley, Leeds United, Bradford City, Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United, Chesterfield and Doncaster Rovers are also local rivals. The Owls have spent the majority of their history in the top flight of English football since joining the Football League in 1892. They have won four League titles, three FA Cups and one League Cup, but their League Cup triumph in 1991 is their only major trophy since 1935. They did reach both domestic cup finals in 1993, but lost 2--1 to Arsenal at Wembley on both occasions. They play their home matches at Hillsborough Stadium in the north-western suburb of ...

(24) Lt. Richard "Dick" Whitson, 17th Inf. Regt..wmv
Another of the interviews of the series of interviews which I conducted in connection with our 3 1/2 hour documentary entitled "Men of Truth and Courage in a 'forgotten war;' The 17th Infantry in Korea." Dick Whitson was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1929, but grew up in New Jersey and is a graduate of Rutgers University where he was in the ROTC. After training recruits at Fort Dix, New Jeresey, he was assigned to the Far East Command and sailed to Japan. He arrived in Korea at Pusan and was assigned to the 7th Division, and was ultimately assigned to the 17th Infantry in October 1952. The regiment was in the vicinity of the Chorwan Valley near the Iron Triangle and Jane Russell Hill. He was assigned to E Co as a Rifle Platoon Leader. The CO was Capt. Sims. There were many in the platoon who could not speak English. They were west of the Khumwa Valley. He was in the same company as Lt. Tom Fernandez de la Reguera. He arrived right after the battle of "Charlie" outpost where Fernandez was awarded the Silver Star. His story is an incredible story of heroism when he rescued several wounded warriors who were rescued from "no man's land." The next interview is one of the wounded men whose life he saved. Dick, who is very artistic, sketched the battle for me during the interview. Amongst many stories, there were very few told with the detail of Dick Whitson, who had played Lacrosse for Rutgers University.

Equipment: RED EPIC, Phantom Flex, Phantom Gold, SmallHD DP6 & DP4
For the past few years, SnapRoll Media has been at the forefront of remotely controlled aerial camera systems. Like most, we started out using DSLR cameras to record video, but it wasn’t long before the image quality wasn’t up to our standards. We began designing and building larger airframes to carry the weight of the cameras we and our clients wanted to use.
Our hard work paid off. We were the first to successfully carry the RED ONE digital cinema camera safely and smoothly. Then, we added Vision Research’s Phantom Flex and Phantom Gold high speed cameras to our arsenal. Furthermore, we had the opportunity to be the first in the world to successfully fly the new RED EPIC on our proven remote controlled aerial system thanks to Jarred Land and Jim Jannard.
We are constantly researching, developing, and fine tuning our helicopters to carry larger cameras with maximum stability. The greatest reward is seeing our clients' faces when we get the shot that no crane, cable cam, or full size helicopter was able to capture. 2012 will be full of incredible projects along with further R&D; on bigger and better remotely controlled (RPV) aerial camera systems. Stay tuned!

America's Dead Sea
Deep in the desert of southern California sits one of the worst environmental sites in America—a former tourist destination that has turned into a toxic soup: the Salton Sea.
The sea was born by accident 100 years ago, when the Colorado River breached an irrigation canal; for the next two years the entire volume of the river flowed into the Salton Sink, one of the lowest places on Earth. The new lake became a major tourist attraction, with resort towns springing up along its shores. Yet with no outflow, and with agricultural runoff serving as its only inflow, the sea’s waters grew increasingly toxic. Farm chemicals and ever-increasing salinity caused massive fish and bird die-offs. Use of the sea for recreational activities plummeted, and by the 1980s its tourist towns were all but abandoned.
The skeletons of these structures are still there; ghost towns encrusted in salt. California officials acknowledge that if billions of dollars are not spent to save it, the sea could shrink another 60 percent in the next 20 years, exposing soil contaminated with arsenic and other cancerous chemicals to strong winds. Should that dust become airborne, it would blow across much of southern California, creating an environmental calamity.

Keri Leigh and the Blue Devils - Preachin' Blues
Keri Leigh & the Blue Devils' authentic and heartfelt cover version of Son House's 1927 classic "Preachin' Blues," from the 1991 album "Blue Devil Blues." (Malaco Records) To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the band's debut album "Blue Devil Blues," the official Keri Leigh & the Blue Devils YouTube channel is releasing many rare and never-before-seen photographs taken during the recording of the album. Donated to this production from Keri Leigh's archives, these candid photographs were taken by Keri and Mark Lyon in Memphis and throughout the Mississippi delta between 1989-1990. The now-historic photographs depict the delta as it used to be, back before casinos changed the north delta landscape forever in the mid-1990s. Several behind-the-scenes photos also document the recording sessions for "Blue Devil Blues" on a portable 8-track Tascam reel-to-reel in various hotel rooms around the region. According to Keri's notes, these sessions took place during the last two weeks of April, 1990. On this track, Mark Lyon is playing a 1929 National Steel that has been part of his guitar arsenal for 22 years. In Lyon and Leigh's early years as an acoustic duo, "Preachin' Blues" was traditionally the last song they played each night. Keri would start testifying while the audience stomped their feet and clapped their hands so loud the whole juke joint would start shaking. Keri always said this was her favorite song to perform. Even in a studio recording without the ...
