The Varangian Rus 1/3
Generally speaking, the Norwegians expanded to the north and west to places such as Ireland, Scotland, Iceland and Greenland; the Danes to England and France, settling in the Danelaw (northern/eastern England) and Normandy; and the Swedes to the east, founding the Kievan Rus, the original Russia. However, among the Swedish runestones which mention expeditions over seas, almost half tell of raids and travels to western Europe. Also, according to the Icelandic sagas, many Norwegian Vikings went to eastern Europe. These nations, although distinct, were similar in culture and language. The names of Scandinavian kings are known only for the later part of the Viking Age. Only after the end of the Viking Age did the separate kingdoms acquire distinct identities as nations, which went hand in hand with their Christianization. Thus the end of the Viking Age for the Scandinavians also marks the start of their relatively brief Middle Ages. According to the Primary Chronicle, compiled in Kiev about 1100-1200 Ad, one group of Varangians was Rus' people. Their name became that of the land of Rus' this happened because one of Rus' princes, Rurik (Old Norse: Hrörekr) had been recognized by several East Slavic and Finno-Ugric peoples as their ruler, founding the Rurikid Dynasty, which later would rule over Rus' and after its fall over Russia for many centuries. Rurik first came to Staraya Ladoga in 862 and then moved his capital to Novgorod in 864, while his relative Oleg (Old Norse ...

Varangian guards
Basil II's distrust of the native Byzantine guardsmen, whose loyalties often shifted with fatal consequences, as well as the proven loyalty of the Varangians, led him to employ them as his personal bodyguards. This new force became known as the Varangian Guard (Gr. Tagma ton Varangion, Τάγμα των Βαραγγίων) Over the years, new recruits from Sweden, Denmark, and Norway kept a predominantly Scandinavian cast to the organization until the late 11th century. So many Scandinavians left to enlist in the guard that a medieval Swedish law stated that no one could inherit while staying in Greece - the then Scandinavian term for the Byzantine empire. In the eleventh century, there were also two other European courts that recruited Scandinavians: Kievan Rus' c. 980-1060 and London 1018-1066 (the Þingalið).[14] Steven Runciman, in The History of the Crusades, noted that by the time of the Emperor Alexios Komnenos, the Byzantine Varangian Guard was largely recruited from Anglo-Saxons and "others who had suffered at the hands of the Vikings and their cousins the Normans".

Varangian longaxe
Using the longaxe at the Des Moines Faire during one of our scheduled demos. We did three each day and each one consisted of 3-5 fights with a group fight at the end. Mixed in with the combat are speaking segments where we describe our "character", why we dress and carry what we do, and the weapons we fight with.

Varangian guard runestones with translation and AA - Varyags Of Miklagaard+lyrics
Amon Amarth Varyags Of Miklagaard lyrics: Miklagaard has been our home For twenty years or more We've lent our axes, spears and swords In service of the emperor We are loyal warriors That's the oath we gave To protect the emperor Even to a violent grave Our loyalty was always firm We kept our given word On these southern battlefields Our northern war cries roared Battles have been fought Many gave their lives But all who died by axe and sword Were called to hall up high Our time here Is now at end Can't help but reminisce A cold spring day So long ago When we set out to sea We! Set out from Svitjod's Shores! With dreams of fame and Gold! And! The work of weaving Norn's! Was unknown We were loyal warriors That's the oath we gave To protect the emperor Even to the grave It's time to take farewell We have been resolved From the sacred oath we gave It's time to go back home Out time here Is now at end Our memories will stay Of Miklagaard Our southern home Until the end of days We! Set out for Svitjod's Shores! With honor and Rewards! We return back Home! We return back Home! With honor and Rewards! We return back Home!
