Film Clip Ory Kid in Paris 1956 In September 1956 Kid Ory and his New Orleans Jazz Band made their first trip to Europe. Her are a few film clips during his stay in Paris. My original short film is in very bad shape, but from a historic point of view I want to share some of it with our youtube and dailymotion friends. Ory in the streets of Paris on his way to the gig. In the club the band plays part of the "Chimes blues" and also 'Creole Song" a tune sung by Ory in the typical New Orleans patois style. I have a few LP albums of that 1956 period and from the pictures it appears that Ory's band on this tour had the following musicians in the band. Alvin Alcorn trumpet, Phil Gomez clarinet, Cedric Heywood piano, Wellman Braud bass and Minor "Ram" Hall on drums

Kid Ory 1959 - Tiger Rag At this concert in Paris in the "La Pleyel" concerthall Ory and his band play "Tiger Rag" Next to Ory on trombone we see Henry "Red" Allen on trumpet, Bobby McCracken on clarinet, Cedric Heywood piano, William Girsback bass and Alton Redd drums Edward Ory was born in 1986 in LaPlace, Louisiana. As a child, he began to make music on homemade instruments. By 1911 he was leading one of the best-known bands in New Orleans. Among its members at various times were several musicians who later were highly influential in jazz development, including Sidney Bechet, Mutt Carey, Jimmy Noone, King Oliver, and Louis Armstrong. In 1919 Ory moved to California, forming a new band in Los Angeles. After five years he joined King Oliver in Chicago and by the end of the 1920s had become a prolific jazz recording artist. He played with King Oliver's Dixie Syncopators, Louis Armstrong, and Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers. In 1930 Ory retired from music to run a successful chicken farm, but on his comeback in 1939 he enjoyed even greater success. He worked with clarinetist Barney Bigard and trumpeter Bunk Johnson (1943), and his motion-picture credits include Crossfire, New Orleans, and The Benny Goodman Story. Ory was perhaps the first musician to codify, purely by precept, the role of the trombone in classic three-part contrapuntal jazz improvisation. Sorry about the film quality but it might be the only visual witness of their band's music from this first trip to Europe in September 1956. Blues For Jimmy written by Kid Ory performed by Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band recorded in Los Angeles, 3 Auguts 1944 issued as Crescent 2 in January 1945 This was the band that was put together to play during intermission for Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre on the CBS radio network. Jimmie Noone was the original clarinettist chosen to participate. He died unexpectedly and was replaced by Omer Simeon. Alton Redd is here on drums. Mutt Carey is the trumpet player and plays hot whether open or muted. This is his definitive recording. Buster Wilson is on piano, Bud Scott on guitar, and Ed Garland handles the bass chores. Ory, of course, is on trombone and smears, slides, and tailgates in the same way he did back in the twenties when he recorded with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. Ory was an innovator, a giant in the history of jazz music. Nesuhi Ertegun, who later co-founded Atlantic records, was so enamoured with this band that he recorded them in a state of the art studio and started his own Crescent label to release the recordings. Both sides of the first two releases make up that first studio date.

Edward 'Kid' Ory (Dec.25,1886 - Jan.23,1973) was a jazz trombonist and bandleader. He was born in Woodland Plantation near LaPlace, Louisiana. Ory started playing music with home-made instruments in his childhood, and by his teens was leading a well-regarded band in Southeast Louisiana. He kept LaPlace, Louisiana as his base of operations due to family obligations until his twenty-first birthday, when he moved his band to New Orleans, Louisiana. He was one of the most influential trombonists of early jazz. Ory was a banjo player during his youth and it is said that his ability to play the banjo helped him develop "tailgate," a particular style of playing the trombone. In "tailgate" style the trombone plays a rhythmic line underneath the trumpets and cornets. House on Jackson Avenue, New Orleans, was Ory's residence in the 1910s. He had one of the best-known bands in New Orleans in the 1910s, hiring many of the great jazz musicians of the city, including, cornetists Joe "King" Oliver, Mutt Carey, and Louis Armstrong; and clarinetists Johnny Dodds and Jimmie Noone. In 1919 he moved to Los Angeles—one of a number of New Orleans musicians to do so near that time—and he recorded there in 1922 with a band that included Mutt Carey, clarinetist and pianist Dink Johnson, and string bassist Ed Garland.
