Clark Terry Documentary - "Keep On Keepin' On" Trailer
KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON is the inspiring story of a jazz legend and one of his last students. The legend is 91-year-old Clark Terry, a man who played in the Duke Ellington and Count Basie bands and mentored the likes of Miles Davis and Quincy Jones. His student is 24-year-old Justin Kauflin, a blind piano prodigy who struggles with stage fright but has a dream of following in his mentor's footsteps. When Justin is invited to compete in a prestigious jazz competition and Clark's health takes a turn for the worse, the film builds to an emotional climax, chronicling every heart-warming practice session and heart-breaking hospital visit. The result is an intimate portrait of two lives in music and of a teacher who continues to inspire even as he fights for his own survival. As Quincy Jones testifies: "He's one of god's gifts to this planet."

Clark Terry Sextet - Pennies from Heaven
Clark Terry Sextet live in Montreux Jazz Festival, back at 1977. Clark Terry (fl, tp) is joined by an all star band including: Oscar Peterson (p) Ronnie Scott (ts) Niels Pedersen (b) Joe Pass (g) Bobby Durham (dr) Milt Jackson (vb) This is part of the Norman Granz (producer) collection. I still cannot believe the synthesis of this setting. I know that Milt Jackson, Clark Terry and Oscar Peterson had a history of playing and recording together, but still...I'm so happy to have this live performance.

Clark Terry Tribute - St. Peter's Church, Manhattan, April 24, 2012
A historic night in New York City as many musicians and fans gather to celebrate the life of the ailing master trumpet man, Clark Terry at St Peter's Church in midtown Manhattan and I was there. Clark has played with every known band in the nation for almost seventy years. This is a snippet of the closing tune with people like, Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, Mulgrew Miller, Lou Soloff and many other local musicians. The crowd was a rousing reminder of the power inherent in the 'joyful noise.' Clark was there in spirit and in a short video called, "Keep on Keeping On." The young blind man at the piano is William Patterson, a student and friend of Clark's who, upon being asked to compete in the Thelonius Monk Competition earlier received a pair of socks from Clark to help him compete. It was a great night at 54th and Lexington in NYC. Ran into Lou Donaldson so that made the night for me. Enjoy. Off to Smoke to catch The Farnsworth Machine and some fine Bebop ballads and blues.

CHICAGO JAZZ FEST 1985: Clark Terry, Charlie Rouse, Buddy DeFranco (watch CT clone himself)
The Chicago Jazz Festival is the largest FREE jazz festival in the world and it's one of the highlights of Chicago's cultural calendar. This video goes back to the early days of that festival -- the 1985 edition. It's a sextet that was put together as a tribute to Count Basie who had just passed away the year before on April 26. Viewers will wonder if Clark Terrry qualified for DOUBLE-scale salary based on his duplication antics! "Moten Swing" ============ Clark Terry - trumpet & flugelhorn Charlie Rouse -- tenor saxophone Buddy DeFranco -- clarinet Nat Pierce -- piano Milt Hinton -- bass Gus Johnson -- drums Visit the official Clark Terry web site to hear a free sample of 'mumbling', ie, his unique style of scat-singing that's almost a language all its own. Indeed, Clark's muttering makes more sense than the blathering of most politicians ! A two-minute sample will auto-play upon your arrival at www.clarkterry.com The Chicago Jazz Festival is programmed every year by the Jazz Institute of Chicago in collaboration with the Mayor's Office of Special Events. NOTE This YouTube channel is Chicago-based. Please join us in the effort to propagate jazz in all its forms. The Jazz Institute of Chicago (a not-for-profit organization) is an integral part of the music scene in our beloved city and deserves your support.
