Two suicide attackers from an al-Qaida-linked group blew themselves up on Wednesday trying to hit an Iranian cultural centre in a Shiite district in southern Beirut, killing at least two people, according to Lebanese security officials.
It was the latest apparent attack linked to the civil war in neighbouring Syria.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack, which security officials said was believed to have been carried out by two suicide bombers.
Officials said another 38 people were wounded. They spoke anonymously as they were not authorised to talk to the press.

The panel relates to existing debates on the role of women on a variety of research questions, including women diasporas, the gender-related aspect of prejudice towards immigrants, women diasporas as promoters of socio-cultural change in countries of origin and of destination, women migrants and those left behind, health issues related to women migrants, the role of women migrants for sustainable development.

Turkish pavilion at EXPO Milano presents the country's finest cultural treats
With its theme, ‘Digging into History for Future Food,' and set up on an area of 4,000 square meters, the Turkish pavilion at EXPO Milano 2015 shows the peculiar place of food and agriculture in Turkey's long history
Welcoming its guests with the motto of "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life," EXPO Milano provides significant opportunities to exchange ideas in the food and nourishment industry, promote cultural and historical heritage and collaborate with 145 participating countries for the sustainability of the planet.
It is a unique platform, allowing many countries to share their traditions, cultures and contemporary technologies to draw attention to two of the world's most significant subjects - food and energy. Currently on display in Milano since May, EXPO Milano also introduces Turkey's 1,000-year-old cultural heritage and rich values to the world. As a participating country, Turkey principally targets not only to present its extraordinary and longstanding food traditions but also share its vision and ideas on these fields. Located in the northwest of Milano, the Turkish Pavilion which consists of three main divisions - indoor, semi-outdoor and outdoor venues - extends across a total area of 4,170 square meters.
Turkey set the main theme for the EXPO project as "Digging into History for Future Food." The pavilion's visual motto is pomegranate ("nar" in Turkish), which signifies abundance in many religions and cultures, like in Turkey. Creatively enough, the image of the pomegranate can be seen in the entire architectural and contextual design as well as in the main formation of the pavilion.
The Turkish Pavilion has seven semi-outdoor chambers. Five of these chambers were designed for theme-related events, while the two other serve as a Turkish restaurant and souvenir shop. At the entrance of the outdoor area, visitors can see a modern perforated roof in the shape of the popular "Seljuk star" figure. Ottoman-style fountains, a world-famous Turkish traditional house and traditional glasswork called "Çeşm-i Bülbül" (The Eye of Nightingale) are the next items that make the pavilion more attractive.
There is also a genuine indoor space where visitors can enjoy Turkish tea and coffee. Besides, a bazaar, kiosks and the "Anatolian Food Table" are available at the outdoor area. Aside from these, the indoor area features an office building and a library bearing the traces of traditional Turkish patterns with a contemporary architecture interpretation. Visitors are recommended to attend cultural events taking place in the pavilion area. Some of last month's theme-related events included "The World Miracle Hazelnut" workshop on the Hazelnut Taste Week, "The Unique Flavor of Fresh Water" workshop on the Turkish Aquaculture Week and "A City in Love with Her Fish: Istanbul" talk delivered by Defne Koryürek.
Among all EXPO Milano countries, the China Pavilion, which covers more than 4,500 square meters in terms of space, stands out with examples from the country's agriculture and food culture. The China platform consists of four parts, all of which promote the country's centuries-long traditions. The pavilion was constructed with large bamboo panels to create a roof which evokes the appearance and texture of golden wheat fields swaying in the wind. The China Pavilion's theme is "The Land of Hope," expressing the idea that "hope" will exist if the nature and the city survive in harmony. The name of the pavilion sections are "Heaven," "Human," "Earth" and "Harmony," all of which represent the relationship between Chinese people and their food. For those planning to trip to Italy, EXPO Milano pavilions are advisable locations for a short visit until Oct. 31.

Aftermath of blast in capital near Iranian cultural centre and Kuwaiti Embassy; hospital scenes
An Associated Press photographer in the Bir Hassan area where the blast occurred said he heard two explosions near the Kuwaiti Embassy and Iran's cultural centre.
Fire engines and ambulances rushed to the area and were seen evacuating some of the wounded in stretchers. Soldiers also deployed and cordoned the area.
Blast walls were set up in front of the Iranian cultural centre recently apparently for fear of such attacks.
The explosions were also close to an orphanage house run by an Islamic charity and an army barracks, the officials said.
A wave of bombings linked to the war in neighbouring Syria has struck Lebanon over the past few months, killing and wounding scores of people. Many have hit Shiite areas.
The Abdullah Azzam Brigades said on its Twitter account that it will give more details about the "invasion of the Iranian cultural centre by your brothers" in the Sunni radical group.
The officials said troops in the area suspected one of the suicide attackers and opened fire at him, apparently forcing the two to blow themselves up prematurely, before reaching the Iranian cultural centre.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam, whose Cabinet was formed on Saturday, said the blast is "a message by forces of terrorism to continue in their plan to spread death in Lebanon."
Wednesday's blasts came after Lebanese troops recently detained an alleged mastermind of similar attacks.
Officials said he led them to several vehicles rigged with explosives.
One of the deadliest attacks occurred in November when two suicide attackers blew themselves outside the Iranian Embassy in Beirut, killing 23 people and wounded dozens.
That attack was claimed by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades.
The group's leader was captured by Lebanese authorities in December and died in custody later in the month.
Iran is a major backer of Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shiite militia.
Both are allies with Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Syrian rebels have vowed to strike against Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon in retaliation for its participation in the war.

Health disparities have been identified among racial and ethnic minorities within the United States. Isolated: The Zo'é tribe (full documentary)
This series (Amazonia: Last Call) travels across Brazilian landscapes by way of one of the main links still binding the essence of humanity with the Earth: the Amazon.
The filming of the first point of contact with an isolated race, the Zo'E, the encroachment on areas of the Amazonian forest previously uncaptured on film, the evidence relating to the development of the illegal trafficking of species or the recording of the immeasurable value of Brazil's natural spaces; these are just excerpts from the series.
The underlying theme is the conflict between the development and conservation of one of the key natural areas underpinning the stability of the planet.

Bridging Gaps: The Vital Role of Cultural Competence in Healthcare
Webcast on December 18, 2014
Speakers:
Wilma Alvarado-Little, M.A., M.S.W.
Language Access Advocate
James O’Barr, M.S.W.
Migrant Health Coordinator, N.E. Region, Hudson River Healthcare, Inc.
Health disparities have been identified among racial and ethnic minorities within the United States. These disparities have been linked to health beliefs and behaviors, access to care, and quality of health care services. Cultural competency is one area in healthcare training that addresses health disparities by creating awareness of sociocultural and racial bias among medical and public health professionals. Jeannette South-Paul and Robert Like have stated in, Cultural Competence for the Health Workforce, “Evidence of cultural (racial, ethnic, and religious, among other determinants) discordance between health care providers and the populations they serve suggests that every member of the health workforce must understand and implement culturally competent care as the foundation for improving the quality of services delivered.”
Bridging Gaps: The Vital Role of Cultural Competence in Healthcare will present fundamental concepts on cultural and linguistic competence for medical and public health professionals. This webcast will demonstrate why cultural and linguistic competence is important and how it can facilitate dialogue, awareness, and learning to address diverse healthcare needs.

Races and Cultures in the Deep South of the United States: Educational Film
The Southern United States—commonly referred to as the American South, Dixie, or simply the South— is an area in the southeastern and south-central United States. The region is known for its distinct culture and history, having developed its own customs, musical styles and varied cuisines that have helped distinguish it from the rest of the United States. The South has traditionally shown the strongest instances and rules favoring racism against Blacks and Hispanics.[2][3] The Southern ethnic heritage is diverse.[4] The central factor has been the consequence of plantation dependence on slave labor; the presence of a large proportion of African Americans in the population; and the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War.
Historically, the South relied heavily on agriculture, and was highly rural until after 1945. It has since become more industrialized and urban and has attracted national and international migrants. The American South is now among the fastest-growing areas in the United States. While there has been rapid economic growth, every Southern state with the exceptions of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida has a higher poverty rate than the American average.[5] Poverty is especially prevalent in rural areas.[citation needed] Sociological research indicates that Southern collective identity stems from political, demographic, and cultural distinctiveness. The region contains the Bible Belt, an area of high church attendance, especially Evangelical churches such as the Southern Baptist Convention. Studies have shown that Southerners are more conservative than non-Southerners in several areas, including religion, morality, international relations and race relations.[6][7] This is evident in both the region's religious attendance figures and in the support for the Republican Party in political elections since the 1960s.[6][7]
Overall, the South has had lower percentages of high school graduates, lower housing values, lower household incomes, and lower cost of living than the rest of the United States.[8] These factors, combined with the fact that Southerners have continued to maintain strong loyalty to family ties, has led some sociologists to label white Southerners a "quasi-ethnic regional group."[9] In previous censuses, the largest ancestry group identified by Southerners was English or mostly English,[10][11][12] with 19,618,370 self-reporting "English" as an ancestry on the 1980 census, followed by 12,709,872 listing "Irish" and 11,054,127 "Afro-American".[10][11][12] Almost a third of all Americans who claim English ancestry can be found in the American South, and over a quarter of all Southerners claim English descent as well.[13] The South also continues to have the highest percentage of African-Americans in the country.
Apart from its climate, the living experience in the South increasingly resembles the rest of the nation. The arrival of millions of Northerners (especially in the suburbs and coastal areas) and millions of Hispanics means the introduction of cultural values and social norms not rooted in Southern traditions. Observers conclude that collective identity and Southern distinctiveness are thus declining, particularly when defined against "an earlier South that was somehow more authentic, real, more unified and distinct." The process has worked both ways, however, with aspects of Southern culture spreading throughout a greater portion of the rest of the United States in a process termed "Southernization".

More than 240 peaks over 20,000 ft (6,096 m) above sea level are located in Nepal.[11] The southern Terai region is fertile and humid.
Hinduism is practiced by about 81.3% of Nepalis, the highest percentage of any country. Buddhism is linked historically with Nepal and is practiced by 9% of its people, followed by Islam at 4.4%, Kiratism 3.1%, Christianity 1.4%,[2] and animism 0.4%.[12] A large portion of the population, especially in the hill region, may identify themselves as both Hindu and Buddhist, which can be attributed to the syncretic nature of both faiths in Nepal.

Conducting Research in Rural Appalachia - Cultural and Practical Considerations
(Visit: http://seminars.uctv.tv/) For those living outside the region, rural Appalachia has historically conjured up images of poverty and despair. Eleanor Roosevelt visited the area during the New Deal era, highlighting the plight of the coal miners, but since then, there has not been much attention to an area that is stricken by poverty and unemployment. Movies like "Deliverance" have portrayed the Appalachian region as one of backward living and incestuous relationships. For decades, rural Appalachia has been relatively hidden from view, and as a consequence, the health disparities within the area have gone largely unnoticed by the general public. The resilience and determination of the people of this region has kept a small but dedicated group of volunteers, health care providers, and academics working in the area. While isolated local efforts by volunteer, academic and faith-based groups in communities in rural Appalachia have been providing various services, the need for more col! laborative efforts exists to strengthen local social capital. [Recent media attention] sparked a national resurgence in interest for the area, which will hopefully lead to the further development of interdisciplinary and community-based research and interventions to address the health disparities of Appalachia." - From: "Rural Appalachia: Disparities within Disparities" (M.
