Maybe it could be dubbed "Seasons of Their Rarities," a compilation I put together of all the still unreleased Mazzy Star songs I know of the band played live at some point, including covers, but which have never yet been put out in studio versions, or on official releases. Aside from 3 cover songs (&"I'm Less Here"),the titles may not be true titles but tentative ones placed on them by tapers/traders of live shows. All these song recordings have been uploaded to yt previously by me but scattered across separate uploads.One exception is "Rock Section" from CBGBs 1994. I'd previously upped the 1997 version from The Mint, not the CBGB's one. Btw, the song Rock Section is often cited as originating with The Colours Out Of Time's 1981 single,but another band,Skin Patrol,reportedly performed it first,as early as 1979 at the London club,The Bat Cave. I thought it would be good to collect all known,accessible unreleased Mazzy Star songs together into one compilation,& don't know why I didn't think of doing this sooner as it seems an obvious good idea now. Early uploads to yt of the same show came from recordings one or more analog tape generations removed from the original. Thanks go to Scott too for "I'm Less Here" & "Rock Section", both from his 1994 CBGB's master tape. I don't know who the tapers are of the excellent Copenhagen 2000 show, or the 1997 one from The Mint, but thanks go to whomever they are. Some of the lyrics are hard to discern, especially in some of the the 1990 recordings (lyrics to the three cover songs are easy to look up, or at least two of them are). I spent some time once trying to decipher words to these unreleased songs when I upped them individually, & posted my attempted lyrics transcriptions in the video descriptions at those uploads which are still findable on my youtube Channel. "Plain Gold Ring" here sounds significantly (wildly?) different, musically, from Nina Simone's version. This Mazzy Star version could be considered a precursor to Hope's "For the Rest of Your Life," a song Hope included on her 2009 Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions album "Through the Devil Softly" as the music in the two songs has so many similarities. Hope's credited as songwriter on "For the Rest of Your Life" which suggests she may also deserve some credit for the rewrite of the music for "Plain Gold Ring," here. Hope's been a long time Rolling Stones fan from an early age. Her duo Going Home she started in high school with friend Sylvia Gomez is named after an early Stones song title. It may be likely it's the Stones' 1964 version of Bo Diddley's "Mona" she first heard, which would make this Mazzy Star version a cover of a cover. The song "Give You My Lovin' ", which appears on Mazzy Star's 1990 debut album, is a song that, like "Where Did You Run To" here, originated as a Going Home song. Sylvia Gomez wrote "Give You my Lovin' ". Hope also sang "Where Did You Run To" at live Opal shows in 1988 after she replaced Kendra Smith as singer. Opal was renamed Mazzy Star in 1989. I don't know if Sylvia also wrote "Where Did You Run To", or if Hope wrote it, or if they co-wrote it. There are other songs Mazzy Star recorded that never made it onto albums but did get official releases as studio B-sides on 1990s singles, so they are not included in this compilation of unreleased songs.
