Relatively Speaking - Alan Ayckbourn - BBC Saturday Night Theatre
Relatively Speaking is a play by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn, originally titled Meet My Father, his first major success
The action of the play takes place during a summer weekend in the bed-sitting room of Ginny's London flat and on the garden patio of Sheila and Philip's home in Buckinghamshire, outside London. The time is 1965.
The play opens in the flat of Greg and Ginny, a young co-habiting couple. Greg finds a strange pair of slippers under the bed and is too besotted to believe they might have been left by another man (which would also explain the bunches of flowers and boxes of sweets filling Ginny's apartment). Ginny goes off for a day in the country, supposedly to visit her parents but actually to break things off with her older married lover, Philip. Greg decides to f...

Ginny, after breaking up with her boss Philip, goes to his country home to get back some love letters. She tells her new boyfriend Greg that she is going to visit her parents. Greg secretly follows her, and for the rest of the afternoon there are two couples together in Philip's garden. Greg believes that Philip is Ginny's father and that Philip's wife, Sheila, is Ginny's mother. Philip mistakenly gets the idea that Greg is having an affair with his wife Sheila, and Sheila is led to believe that Ginny is nothing more than her husband's secretary. But for how long can the real nature of the relationships be disguised? This popular British comedy from 1967 is still considered to be Alan Ayckbourn's best crafted piece.

Relatively Speaking by Alan Ayckbourn | Ensemble Theatre
CLASSIC COMEDY - In 1960s London, couples are swinging, some more than others. Greg is paying a visit to Ginny’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage. Blithely misinformed, he arrives at the home of Philip and Sheila hoping they’ll give their blessing. But no-one is quite what they seem and nothing quite goes to plan. In this perfectly paced comedy of misunderstandings, Alan Ayckbourn expertly weaves an exquisite entanglement that will leave you guessing to the last minute.

Relatively Speaking on Broadway
Ethan Coen, Elaine May, and Woody Allen bring three wildly different kinds of comedy to Broadway this fall! RELATIVELY SPEAKING.
Julie Kavner, Steve Guttenberg, Mark-Linn Baker and Marlo Thomas head a 16-person cast in this must-see evening of one-act plays that explore the often outrageous reality of relatives.
Each one-act play springs from a different branch of the family tree. In "Talking Cure," Ethan Coen uncovers the sort of insanity that can only come from family. In "George is Dead," Elaine May explores the hilarity of death. And in "Honeymoon Motel," Woody Allen invites you to the sort of wedding day you won't forget.
