What's My Line? Judy Holliday (1953)
Oscar winner Judy Holliday appears as the mystery guest on the popular CBS game show What's My Line, broadcast July 5, 1953. Regular panelist Bennett Cerf quickly guesses who she is. When Ms. Holliday is asked to speak in the "Born Yesterday voice," the reference is to the voice she used in the film Born Yesterday (1950). For her performance in this film as a ditzy and uncouth former showgirl, she won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Around the time of being so honored, in 1951, Holliday was virtually banished from radio and television when it was alleged, in print and in Congressional testimony, that she was associated with "Communist front" organizations (this was the era of anti-Communist crusading -- "the Red scare" -- conducted by Pat McCarran and Joseph McCarthy, among others). Mark Goodson wanted her as a guest on the show even before this appearance, but CBS would not allow it, because of the allegations against her. Over time the troubled waters calmed and this appearance was one of her first returns to broadcasting (she continued to work in Hollywood all the while). Ironically, Bennett Cerf owed his position on the program to the fact that his predecessor as panelist, Louis Untermeyer, was named as a potential subversive in the booklet "Red Channels: The Report of Communist Influence in Radio and Television," the same publication that had named Holliday. Untermeyer was fired and Cerf took his place. Some time later, as part of an oral history ...

STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies - BORN YESTERDAY
BORN YESTERDAY (1950) Comedy reigned supreme at the 1950 Academy Awards when Judy Holliday, swept past leading contenders Bette Davis ("All About Eve") and Gloria Swanson ("Sunset Boulevard") to capture the Oscar as Best Actress for her legendary comic performance as the irrepressible Billie Dawn in George Cukor's "Born Yesterday". Based on the successful stage comedy by Garson Kanin, Holliday had already performed the role countless times on Broadway, but Columbia Pictures mogul Harry Cohn was not convinced he should hand the juicy part over to her and favored Rita Hayworth, for whom he bought the property in the first place. However, Cukor in cahoots with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy virtually used their comedy "Adam's Rib" as a screen test for Holliday and "Born Yesterday" was hers. Cukor cast hunky William Holden as her romantic mentor and Broderick Crawford, fresh from his Oscar winning role in "All The King's Men" as her blowhard boyfriend Harry Brock. The sparks fly and so do the laughs as this unpredictable little blonde turns the tables on everybody, proving that she's smarter than they thought and wasn't "Born Yesterday"! Judy Holliday - Trouble Is A Man
Due to the success of her portrayal of Billie Dawn in "Born Yesterday," for which she won the 1950 Academy Award for Best Actress, Judy Holliday was forever type-cast as a dumb blonde in all her movie roles, this, despite the fact that she had an IQ of 172. She only made a few films, and during the last years of her life, she divided her time between recording and appearing on stage. Her last movie "Bells Are Ringing" (1960) was the film adapation of the stage play for which she won the 1957 Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. During the last five years of her life, she battled breast cancer and finally succumbed to the disease on June 7, 1965 at the age of 43. In 1958 at the age of 37, she recorded a solo album entitled "Trouble Is A Man." Though not a great singer, she proved herself to be a great stylist. A reviewer of the album remarked that there was more to singing than just hitting the right notes - there was also technique and style. Miss Holliday's performances of the various songs on the album proved that she had plenty of both. An excellent site for learning more about Judy Holliday can be found here: www.wtv-zone.com For the video treatment of this song, I've used stills featuring several of her leading men - Aldo Ray, William Holden, Jack Lemmon, and Dean Martin, as well as video clips from her last film, "Bells Are Ringing." Hope you like it... TROUBLE IS A MAN (Words and music by Alec Wilder) A woman gets all the blame For everything that ...
