UN appeals for $1.5 billion to provide aid to people affected by Syrian crisis
The United Nations and its humanitarian partners appealed today for $1.5 billion to assist civilians affected by the ongoing conflict in Syria over the next six months, including those inside the country as well as those taking refuge beyond its borders. The bulk of the appeal -- $1 billion -- is for the Syria Regional Response Plan, which will support refugees fleeing Syria to Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Turkey and Egypt. It is based on estimates that up to a million Syrian refugees will need help during the first half of 2013. More than $519 million will be needed to support an estimated four million people inside Syria who need urgent humanitarian assistance, including an estimated two million internally displaced persons (IDPs). Together, the 2013 Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan -- which covers relief activities inside Syria -- and the new Syria Regional Response Plan comprise the largest short-term humanitarian appeal ever. They have been revised several times over the course of this year. The number of people in need of assistance inside Syria has quadrupled from one million in March 2012 to four million in December. The main needs outlined in the Syria Humanitarian Assistance Response Plan include food assistance, shelter, water and sanitation, nutrition and emergency medical services, cash assistance, basic services, and non-food items, such as mattresses and bedding, kitchen and hygiene sets, and clothes. UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos on humanitarian concerns and the General Assembly
UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos on humanitarian concerns and the General Assembly
United Nations (UN) Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos called on world leaders to stay focused on the humanitarian agenda as they prepare to gather for the General Debate next week. This year alone, humanitarian organizations have asked for nearly US$9 billion to provide aid to more than 50 million people in 19 countries. So far, they have only received half of the funds. Amos, who had seen for herself the humanitarian conditions in 12 crisis-affected countries since the last General Debate, said "we have a number of places where we need to keep the international community's attention focused on on-going protracted crises -- the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is one good example." Amos, who visited the DRC in August, said "since April this year, 266000 people have fled conflict just in one province of the country, in North Kivu. Left in their droves with very little going they don't know where." While in the DRC, she visited communities affected by conflict and displacement in North Kivu, in the country's east. Conflict between the Congolese army and armed forces in the region had forced about 60000 people to flee to neighbouring countries like Rwanda and Uganda since the beginning of the year. Last month, she also visited Syria for the second time in 2012. She met with Government officials as well as aid workers from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the UN Refugee Agency to assess the situation and push for more access to people in need. Talking about what she had

Automobile Sales, Syria, Israel, Status of Jerusalem, US Credit Rating Downgrade (2012)
Automobile Sales, Syria, Israel, Status of Jerusalem, US Credit Rating Downgrade (2012)
thefilmarchive.org July 27, 2012 CRAs such as S&P; have been subject to criticism in the wake of large losses beginning in 2007 in the collateralized debt obligation (CDO) market that occurred despite being assigned top ratings by the CRAs. Credit ratings of AAA (the highest rating available) were given to large portions of even the riskiest pools of loans. Investors trusting the low-risk profile that AAA implies, purchased large amounts of CDOs that later became unsaleable. Those that could be sold often took staggering losses. For instance, losses on $340.7 million worth of CDOs issued by Credit Suisse Group added up to about $125 million, despite being rated AAA by S&P.;[17] Companies pay S&P; to rate their debt issues. As a result, some critics have contended that S&P; is beholden to these issuers and that its ratings are not as objective as they ought to be and that, in fact, this "pay to play" model makes their ratings meaningless at best and perhaps would more accurately be compared to the role of the "shill" in a game of three card monte. In April 2009, the company called for "new faces" in the Irish government, which was seen as interfering in the democratic process. In a subsequent statement they said they were "misunderstood".[18] Some critics have pointed out that the company and other rating agencies were part of the cause of the global financial crisis of 2008--2009, for example when Moody's downgraded Freddie Mac[19] or, to quote Time, when "both agencies

Buffett Rule, Tax Reform Law, Greek Debt Crisis, Health Care Plan, Cap and Trade, Dodd-Frank (2012)
thefilmarchive.org February 21, 2012 The Greek government-debt crisis is one of a number of current European sovereign-debt crises. Beginning in late 2009, fears of a sovereign debt crisis developed among investors concerning Greece's ability to meet its debt obligations due to strong increase in government debt levels.[1][2][3] This led to a crisis of confidence, indicated by a widening of bond yield spreads and the cost of risk insurance on credit default swaps compared to the other countries in the eurozone, most importantly Germany.[4][5] The downgrading of Greek government debt to junk bond status in April 2010 created alarm in financial markets. On 2 May 2010, the eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreed on a €110 billion bailout loan for Greece, conditional on the implementation of austerity measures. In October 2011, Eurozone leaders agreed to offer a second €130 billion bailout loan for Greece, conditional not only the implementation of another austerity package, but also that all private creditors holding Greek government bonds should sign a deal accepting a 53.5% facevalue loss. This proposed restructure of all Greek public debt held by private creditors, which constituted a 58% share of the total Greek public debt, would according to the bailout plan reduce the overall public debt burden with roughly €110 billion. A debt relief equal to a lowering of the debt-to-GDP ratio from a forecasted 198% in 2012 down to roughly 160% in 2012
