Green Building: Jobs of the Future
The Washington State Department of Ecology views green building as a key player in addressing a number of our states priority environmental issues: mitigating climate change, reducing toxics in our environment, reducing waste (both solid and hazardous), managing storm-water run-off and more. In an effort to describe the opportunities that exist this fast growing market the Construction Center of Excellence and WIRED partnered with Department of Ecology and the Department of General Administration on a film project: Green Building: Jobs of the Future. The film brings together local and national leaders in green building, climate change, manufacturing, and work-force development to make the case for green buildings capacity to create jobs and boost the economy while not further imposing on our environment. In these challenging times, opportunities abound! Video transcript is available here: www.ecy.wa.gov The Washington Department of Ecology's Green Building Group is available to set up Green Building: Jobs of the Future viewing events at schools, businesses, and to community groups. These events can include panel discussions that address green job opportunities available in your region. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Rachael Jamison, Green Building Coordinator, at (360) 407-6352 or email rjam461@ecy.wa.gov.

Story of a Green Building
Sustainable design requires a team approach. This includes architects, construction crew, engineers, developers and an engaged client. Over the last 12 months, staff at the National Building Museum documented a "green team" that created PNC Place, a building one block away from the White House that is aiming for Platinum LEED certification. Join curator Susan Piedmont-Palladino as she interviews a cast of characters that made this sustainable idea a reality.

Green, Beautiful & in Control - Not Just an Eco House w/ Sustainable Architecture
www.control4.com - We're here in Silicon Valley, home to countless Hi-Tech inventions, so it's no surprise that we found a house here that is so cutting edge, so environmentally friendly that some people are calling it, "The World's Greenest Home"... and wouldn't you know it, a Control4 system keeps the whole house humming. Check it out! Linda Yates (Home Owner) - "This is actually the property that I grew up on. My parents bought the property in 1967 so we've been here ever since. We said, 'we really want to build the most sustainable, the most regenerative house in America.' So it's really just four basic materials... it's glass, it's steel, it's wood and it's stone. On the floor, 150-year-old barn wood... stone that wasn't actually good enough for somebody else but our guys were so into it that they went and took it out of the bone pile. The whole design of the house with all the roofs and the steel roof is to be able to catch all the rainwater and storm water and then reuse it. We're putting more green energy back on the grid than we are using. It's definitely the greenest custom home in America." "There's 3 myths we were trying to bust with green building: 1. Was that it was ugly... you had to build a concrete box with no windows. 2. That it was twice as expensive. 3. That you had to completely fundamentally change your lifestyle." ... and those are myths that we have to bust. The technology plays a big role in being able to do that." Green Building Basics: An introduction to Eco-Friendly Construction
GreenPlanetBuilding.com 310-577-5000 Green Building Basics. Hi guys, here's an introduction to eco-friendly construction in just over a minute! Hi I'm Laura from Green Planet building and I am going to explain the basics of green building. Green building is also called eco friendly or sustainable building. It's the design and construction of a building that does the least amount of harm to our planet. There are 3 main aspects to green building: health, energy consumption, and environmental impact. Health: Where traditional construction uses products that can emit harmful chemicals or voc's, volatile organic compounds. , eco- friendly builders use health conscious materials like no voc paints and wood products that don't have formaldehyde, they avoid synthetic wall-to-wall carpet, which off-gasses and traps pollutants. Energy consumption: Where traditional building relies on non-renewable energy sources like oil and coal, eco-friendly uses renewable energy like solar thermal for heating water, solar electric, also called photovoltaic, for electric power. and geothermal energy from underground. Eco-friendly conserves energy through proper insulation and design. Environmental impact: Where traditional building contributes to deforestation, pollution and landfils, Eco- friendly aims to conserve our natural resources though careful use of materials. They use FSC certified wood, or Forest Stewardship Council certified wood from responsibly managed forests. They incorporate ...

30-Story Building Built In 15 Days (Time Lapse)
What can you accomplish in 360 hours? The Chinese sustainable building company, Broad Group, has achieved another impossible feat - building a 30-story tall hotel in 360 hours. You may ask "why so fast?" and "is it safe?" Prefabricated modular buildings have many advantages: Higher precision in fabrication (+/- 0.2mm). More coordinated on-site construction management. Shorter construction time span. Lower construction waste. Health and Energy efficiency.
