Johnny Alegre AFFINITY: "Jazzhound" (Candid Records)
This is the title track from their first album on Candid Records (UK). Reminiscent of the funkier side of Grant Green, the insistent, shuffling pulse features Tots Tolentino's hip alto sax playing and (guitarist-composer) Alegre's darting, mercurial lines. The rest of the band includes Elhmir Saison (piano), Colby dela Calzada (bass) and Koko Bermejo (drums).

Abbey Lincoln - Left Alone
Abbey Lincoln started her career in the mid-50s and continued to cut high quality records until her late 70s. This song was originally published on her 1961 album titled Straight Ahead. Originally a Billie Holiday song, she recorded it with Coleman Hawkins, Eric Dolphy, Booker Little, Mal Waldron and Max Roach. Remark: I do not own the rights to this song. Just posting as a fan.

Jimmy Giuffre 3 - River Chant / The Listening / Celebration
Jimmy Giuffre 3 plays River Chant, The Listening, and Celebration from the album River Chant (1975). The album features Jimmy Giuffre (clarinet, flute, bass flute, tenor saxophone), Kiyoshi Tokunaga (bass), and Randy Kaye (percussion). This record is still in print under the title The Train and the River on Candid Records and features some of Jimmy Giuffre's most meditative/contemplative compositions ever. "He looked lovingly into the flowing water, into the transparent green, into the crystal lines of it's wonderful design. He saw bright pearls rise from it's depths, bubbles swimming on the mirror, sky blue reflected in them. The river looked at him with a thousand eyes - green, white, crystal, blue.... It seemed to him that whoever understood this river and it's secrets, would understand much more, many secrets, all secrets.... It seemed to him as if the river had something special to tell him, something which he did not know, something still awaited him.... But today he only saw one of the river's secrets, one that gripped his soul. He saw that the water continually flowed and flowed and yet it was always there; it was always the same and yet every moment it was new.... He learned from it continually. Above all, he learned from it how to LISTEN, to LISTEN with a still heart, with a waiting, open soul, without passion, without desire, without judgment, without opinions." Herman Hesse, SIDDHARTHA

Andrew Candid - Stimulus (Alex Frolov Remix) [Unearthed Red]
AJ Hutch is no stranger to Unearthed Records, having brought us a superb, pounding remix of Luke Terry & Helen Sylk's A Lighter Shade of Blue last year. Now, under his Andrew Candid alias, he is back on Unearthed once again with an original track entitled Stimulus. A strong trance track with a euphoric melody and strong production, a proper anthem track here. On remix duties is Alex Frolov. Alex takes the track down a few notches, with some more subtle synth riffs and a funked up bassline. A smooth breakdown leads the track into the main melody which works perfectly with the new bassline.

Otis Spann (1930-1970) : Two Songs
Otis Spann was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on March 21, 1930 and passed on in Chicago's Cook County Hospital on April 24, 1970. By age 14, Spann was playing gigs around Jackson at juke joints, taverns and clubs. When his mother died in 1947, Spann was sent north to stay with relatives in Chicago, where he finally met his idol and stylistic mentor, Big Maceo Merriweather, who accepted the young man as his prodigy. When Spann replaced Merriweather as a member of Muddy Waters group in 1952, the band took on a new, piano-driven, Blues sound. Spann made his recording with the Muddy Waters Band on September 24, 1953. For eleven years from 1952 onwards Otis Spann played in numerous Muddy Waters recording sessions. He recorded with artists like Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Rogers and Little Walter. He released one single in 1954, It Must Have Been the Devil, with BB King on guitar, cut a few tracks that were shelved until the 90s, and remained a Chess sideman. His big break came after the Muddy Waters Live at Newport LP from 1960 was released, where his stunning boogies and one lead vocal track by showed his potential as a recording artist. It was also in 1960 that he recorded his first full-length LP, 'Otis Spann is the Blues', with Robert Jr. Lockwood on guitar, for Candid Records. Before he died in 1970, Otis Spann had time to record other fine records for Storyville, Decca, Prestige (The Blues Never Die!, w/ James Cotton), Testament, Vanguard. He ...

Leee John - Trust My Heart
This is one of the key songs from our album, "Northern Soul 2007", which we released last September on Centre City Records and is still available to buy. Leee John was born John Leslie McGregor on June 23rd 1957, which is also my own birthday. Born in Hackney, London of St. Lucian descent, Leee is a British musician and actor. He was educated in New York, later studying drama at the Anna Scher Theatre School. He was working as a backing singer when he met Ashley Ingram. They formed a songwriting partnership, resolving to start their own 'slinky, sexy and erotic' group, working in a short-lived band called Fizzz. Together with Errol Kennedy they formed Imagination, a three piece English soul band in the early 1980s. Their first hit "Body Talk" reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart in May 1981. Their biggest hit, "Just an Illusion", peaked at number two in March 1982. The trio frequently appeared on Top of the Pops and other pop music programmes. Despite not being an actor, Leee John made a guest appearance on Doctor Who in the story Enlightenment in 1983. He replaced an actor who had dropped out at short notice. The group in the UK waned but they continued to perform, tour and record until the early 1990s. John went back to acting, but recently resurfaced in the reality TV show Reborn in the USA alongside other singers such as Elkie Brooks and Tony Hadley. In 2005 John released a jazz album, Feel My Soul on Candid Records featuring a mixture of jazz standards, and ...
