Taking Action 4 Youth Puvirnituq - Art and Aboriginal Youth Leadership for HIV Prevention
We held our 6th and final Taking Action! workshop in Puvirnituq, Nunavik in October 2010. Puvirnituq is an Inuit community on the Povungnituk River in northern Quebec, Canada. Nunavik is Quebec's arctic region. This immense territory, lies north of the 55th parallel and is bordered by Hudson Bay to the west, Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay to the north and Labrador to the east. A big thanks to our Puvirnituq youth coordinators Talasia Audlak Tulugak and Winnie Ittukallak for all their hard work in making this workshop happen! www.takingaction4youth.org

Polar Bear Encounter
Steve MacInnis and Steve Ashton were on a Caribou hunt about 125 miles inland from Ungava Bay in Nunavik, Quebec when they encountered a Polar Bear on a freshwater lake. Polar Bears are not usually seen so far from the sea, so it was a totally unexpected encounter. They followed him at a safe distance until he swam across the lake, climbed out and disappeared over the horizon.

Rafting on the Ottawa with Kirsten
Kiki, Hari, Radmilo, Aleks spent the weekend with Kirsten learning rafting skills on the Ottawa - courtesy of OWL Rafting. We had the time of our lives. More importantly, we lived to tell the story, unharmed by our misdeeds. Best photos are rarely captured, and our trip was no exception. Boy, did we laugh after! Aleks was catapulted (some say he jumped the ship!) while surfing the Horseshoe. Super fun. Must do! Courtesy of OWL Rafting, in preparation for our rafting trip to George river in Labrador and Ungava Bay.

Quebec - Canada
Quebec It is the only Canadian province with a predominantly French-speaking identity and the only one whose sole official language is French at the provincial level. Quebec is Canada's largest province by area and its second-largest administrative division; only the territory of Nunavut is larger. It is bordered to the west by the province of Ontario, James Bay and Hudson Bay, to the north by Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay, to the east by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick. It is bordered on the south by the US states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. It also shares maritime borders with Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. Quebec is the second most populous province, after Ontario. Most inhabitants live in urban areas near the Saint Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City, the capital. English-speaking communities and English-language institutions are concentrated in the west of the island of Montreal but are also significantly present in the Outaouais, the Eastern Townships, and Gaspé regions. The Nord-du-Québec region, occupying the northern half of the province, is sparsely populated and inhabited primarily by Aboriginal peoples. Sovereignty plays a large role in the politics of Quebec, and the Official Opposition social democratic Parti Québécois advocates national sovereignty for the province and secession from Canada. Sovereignist governments have held referendums on ...
