Russia, the Kievan Rus, and the Mongols: Crash Course World History #20
In which John Green teaches you how Russia evolved from a loose amalgamation of medieval principalities known as the Kievan Rus into the thriving democracy we know today. As you can imagine, there were a few bumps along the road. It turns out, our old friends the Mongols had quite a lot to do with unifying Russia. In yet another example of how surprisingly organized nomadic raiders can be, the Mongols brought the Kievan Rus together under a single leadership, and concentrated power in Moscow. This set the stage for the various Ivans (the Great and the Terrible) to throw off the yoke and form a pan-Russian nation ruled by an autocratic leader. More than 500 years later, we still have autocratic leadership in Russia. All this, plus a rundown of some of our favorite atrocities of Ivan the Terrible, and a visit from Putin! The Varangian Rus 1/3
Generally speaking, the Norwegians expanded to the north and west to places such as Ireland, Scotland, Iceland and Greenland; the Danes to England and France, settling in the Danelaw (northern/eastern England) and Normandy; and the Swedes to the east, founding the Kievan Rus, the original Russia. However, among the Swedish runestones which mention expeditions over seas, almost half tell of raids and travels to western Europe. Also, according to the Icelandic sagas, many Norwegian Vikings went to eastern Europe. These nations, although distinct, were similar in culture and language. The names of Scandinavian kings are known only for the later part of the Viking Age. Only after the end of the Viking Age did the separate kingdoms acquire distinct identities as nations, which went hand in hand with their Christianization. Thus the end of the Viking Age for the Scandinavians also marks the start of their relatively brief Middle Ages. According to the Primary Chronicle, compiled in Kiev about 1100-1200 Ad, one group of Varangians was Rus' people. Their name became that of the land of Rus' this happened because one of Rus' princes, Rurik (Old Norse: Hrörekr) had been recognized by several East Slavic and Finno-Ugric peoples as their ruler, founding the Rurikid Dynasty, which later would rule over Rus' and after its fall over Russia for many centuries. Rurik first came to Staraya Ladoga in 862 and then moved his capital to Novgorod in 864, while his relative Oleg (Old Norse ...

Kievan Rus' - Ukraine Origins (Київська Русь)
Kievan Rus' or more correctly Kyivan Rus' (Ukraine - Україна) - The first state to arise among the Eastern Slavs and Ukrainians. It took its name from the city of Kyiv, the seat of the grand prince from about 880 until the beginning of the 13th century. At its zenith, it covered a territory stretching from the Carpathian Mountains to the Volga River, and from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea. The state's rapid rise and development was based on its advantageous location at the intersection of major north-south and east-west land and water trade routes with access to two major seas, and favorable local conditions for the development of agriculture. In the end, however, the state's great size led to the development of centrifugal tendencies and local interests that limited its political and social cohesion. This, and its proximity to the Asian steppes, which left it vulnerable to invasions of nomadic hordes, eventually contributed to the decline of Kyivan Rus'. In the 8th century, the territory of Kyivan Rus' was inhabited by a number of tribes who shared a common proto-Slavic language, pagan beliefs, and life-style. The ancestors of the Ukrainians included the Polianians, Siverianians, Derevlianians, Dulibians, White Croatians, Ulychians, and Tivertsians. The proto-Russian Krivichians, Viatichians, and Radimichians and the proto-Belorussian Drehovichians also lived on the lands that eventually constituted Kyivan Rus'. The Polianians were the largest and most developed of the ...

Rurik & Slavic tribes expansion Kievan Rus, Galicia Volhynia, Muscovy [ Early Russia ]
www.youtube.com Kievan Rus was a medieval european state which existed from 880 populated by Old East Slavic warrior elite tribes, today our three modern East Slavic nations Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians. Rurik Dynasty which ruled Kievan Rus and then Galicia Volhynia until the 14th and Muscovy until the 16th century. In 1019 our Slavic tribes take the acceptance of Christianity and the creation of the first East Slavic written legal code, the Russkaya Pravda. The Slavic tribes and Varangians Rus tribes integration is what is known as East Slavic people "Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians". Rurik was a Varangian Rus. The Vagarians was Scandinavian Vikings tribes who left Scandinavia and immigrated to Eastern Europe. The Slavic with Vagarian integration was the beginning of the Kievan Rus. With the time the Slavic culture and language absorbed the Norse culture and language and Vagarians become into East Slavic. As a historic and scientific fact only East Slavic people have Vagarian Rus ancestry and blood the Vikings tribes who remained in Scandinavia not have Vagarian blood or ancestry. Although historians and scientists know that Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians have Varangian ancestry they can not determine if Vagarians are the dominant ancestors or the Slavic are the dominant ancestors because Slavic and Varangian are of R1a and R1b haplogroups typical for Slavic, Germanic and Celts peoples.

History channel - Engineering an Empire - Greek Byzantium 5/5
Relations with Kiev Rus Between 800 and 1100 the Empire developed a mixed relationship with the new state of Kiev Rus that emerged to the north across the Black Sea. Byzantine Empire quickly became a main trading and cultural partner for Kiev. After christianizing Rus Vladimir the Great employed many architects and artists to work on numerous cathedrals and churches around Rus, expanding the Byzantine influence even further. Kiev Princes were often married into the Byzantine imperial family and Constantinople often employed Princes' armies, most notably Vladimir the Great presented Byzantine with the famous Varangian Guard - an army of vicious Scandinavian mercenaries. Some believe that it was done in exchange for the marriage to Basil's sister Anna to Vladimir.[1] However, as Primary Chronicle states the marriage was in exchange for the Rus conversion to Orthodoxy, the Varangian Guard (although a signifficant one) was a by-product of this exchange. These relationships were not always friendly. During those three hundred years Constantinople and other Byzantine cities were attacked several times by the armies of Kiev Rus (see Rus'-Byzantine Wars). Kiev never went far enough to actually endanger the Empire, those wars were only a tool to force the Byzantine to sign increasingly favorable trade treaties, the texts of which are recorded in the Primary Chronicle (Rus'-Byzantine Treaty (907))[4] and other historical documents. Constantinople at the same time constantly played ...
