Umberto Eco: The Prague Cemetery
chicagohumanities.org - See more Chicago Humanities Festival events. Umberto Eco is a literary master. The bestselling author of The Name of the Rose spins prose at once compelling and complex, full of facts, twists, and details born of scholarship in philosophy, medievalism, and semiotics. His latest novel, The Prague Cemetery, summons a world of assassination and intrigue and serves up a conspiracy theory rooted in 19th-century history, inspired by an era Eco calls "full of monstrous and mysterious events." All of the characters, except its main one, really existed. It poses the question, what if every conspiracy, in a world full of conspiracies, were connected by a single, evil genius, who turned modern history into a massive diatribe that still governs how we think? Eco reads from his new book and discusses his work with Chicago Tribune cultural critic Julia Keller. This program is generously underwritten by Lois and Harrison Steans and is presented in partnership with the Chicago Tribune.

Umberto Eco: The Vertigo of Lists - France
November 2009 view FRANCE: Umberto Eco, The Master Of Lists 6 Launches new book throughout November Its a big month for Italian writer and semiotician Umberto Eco. As his new book The Vertigo of Lists is released in 10 languages, he also takes on the honoured role of guest curator at the Louvre. Ecos book is about enumeration lists without a system. Eco believes the world is saturated with infinite lists, found in everything from classic literature, to shop windows. The window-display is a long, enticing list, designed to make us want to buy. Now Eco has taken on the curators role at the Louvre. Museums also illustrate enumeration perfectly. Each museum is a huge row of separate pieces seemingly without order, except to the curator. But all these catalogues have been torn apart by the mass of information we call the internet. It is the list to end all lists. It is an infinite collection of data. And it has one thing in common with all lists: total disorder.
