Club foot
Club foot or clubfoot, also called congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), is a congenital deformity involving one foot or both. The affected foot appears to have been rotated internally at the ankle. Without treatment, people with club feet often appear to walk on their ankles or on the sides of their feet. However, with treatment, the vast majority of patients recover completely during early childhood and are able to walk and participate in athletics just as well as patients born without CTEV.
Later in life most patients will experience pain and limited mobility.
It is a relatively common birth defect, occurring in about one in every 1,000 live births. Approximately half of people with clubfoot have it affect both feet, which is called bilateral club foot. In most cases it is an isolated disorder of the limbs. It occurs in males twice as frequently as in females.
A condition of the same name appears in some non-human animals, particularly horses, though in that particular case it is more akin to stepping en pointe than sideways.

Video demonstration of doctors casting a baby with club feet using the Ponseti Method. Full video: http://bit.ly/2b8x46z The Ponseti method consists of a specific technique of manipulation of the clubfoot deformity, followed by the application of a plaster cast with the foot in the corrected position. A percutaneous tenotomy of the Achilles tendon is done prior to the final cast to gain complete correction in most patients. Bracing with a foot abduction orthosis is necessary to minimize relapse of the deformity.

Clubfoot occurs in approximately one in 1000 live births and is one of the most common congenital birth defects. Although there have been several reports of successful treatment of idiopathic clubfoot with the Ponseti method, the use of this method for the treatment of other forms of clubfoot has not been reported. The purpose of the JBJS manuscript by Matthew B. Dobbs, MD, et.al was to evaluate the early results of the Ponseti method when used for the treatment of clubfoot associated with distal arthrogryposis. Their conclusion was that early-term results support the use of the Ponseti method for the initial treatment of distal arthrogrypotic clubfoot deformity. In this JBJS/VJO video supplement to the article the Ponseti Method for the treatment of clubfoot in distal arthrogryposis is reviewed.

The Ponseti method consists of a specific technique of manipulation of the clubfoot deformity, followed by the application of a plaster cast with the foot in the corrected position. A percutaneous tenotomy of the Achilles tendon is done prior to the final cast to gain complete correction in most patients. Bracing with a foot abduction orthosis is necessary to minimize relapse of the deformity.
Club foot
Club foot or clubfoot, also called congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), is a congenital deformity involving one foot or both. The affected foot appears to have been rotated internally at the ankle. Without treatment, people with club feet often appear to walk on their ankles or on the sides of their feet. However, with treatment, the vast majority of patients recover completely during early childhood and are able to walk and participate in athletics just as well as patients born without CTEV.
Later in life most patients will experience pain and limited mobility.
It is a relatively common birth defect, occurring in about one in every 1,000 live births. Approximately half of people with clubfoot have it affect both feet, which is called bilateral club foot. In most cases it is an isolated disorder of the limbs. It occurs in males twice as frequently as in females.
A condition of the same name appears in some non-human animals, particularly horses, though in that particular case it is more akin to stepping en pointe than sideways.
