Meliz Redif - first Turkish Cypriot to compete at the Olympics
Go Meliz Go! This short film in Turkish by mobile network operator Kibris Telsim features Turkish Cypriot runner Meliz Redif in her native North Cyprus. On Friday 10 August 2012, she will make history as the first Turkish Cypriot to take part in the Olympics. Due to the sporting embargoes, Meliz had to change her national identity & citizenship to take part as a runner for Turkey in their 4 x 400m relay. We are all immensely proud she will be flying the flag for both countries when she runs in the heats at the London 2012 Olympic Games on Friday 10th, circa 7pm UK time.

Turkish Cypriot Private Sector Development - Success Stories
www.undp-pff.org - The EU funded and UNDP-PFF implemented Turkish Cypriot Private Sector Development Programme was recently completed in May 2011 after 8 years of project implementation. The project supported Turkish Cypriot micro, small and medium enterpreneurs to go through significant transformations. This included support in compliance with the Acquis Communautaire, meeting quality and environmental international and European standards, diversifying and increasing the added value of their products and services are just few examples of the enormous adaptation efforts which the Turkish-Cypriot private sector has been making over the past decade.

Turkey out of Cyprus Demonstration 1988 - Cyprus Week in London
Cypriots gather at Speakers Corner of Kensington Gardens in London during July 1988 to demonstrate against the Turkish invasion and continuing occupation of nearly half of our island. Speeches delivered by Norman Atkinson MP and Dr Homer Habibis, then a march down Park Lane to Hyde Park Corner and then on to Belgrave Square to end with a demonstration outside the Turkish Embassy. The demonstration was also attended by representatives of Turkish Cypriots, and of Turkish protest groups. Councillor Aishe Hassan, a Turkish Cypriot member of the Union of Turkish Progressives in Britain, also addressed the meeting, and in addition to calling for Turkish Troops to be removed from Cyprus she also called for support for a demonstration which was to be held the following week at Victoria Station to protest the arrival of Turkey's Prime Minister General Evren on a State visit at the invitation of the British Government and Queen Elisabeth. The demonstration has been held every year since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus on 20th July 1974 - Organised by the National Federation of Cypriots in Britain www.cypriotfederation.org.uk

Documentary | The Island of Cyprus - National Geographic
UrbanTV Cyprus Presents - Part of National Geographic's series on "Islands - Cyprus" Find us on Facebook: www.facebook.com Info - The Cyprus dispute is the result of the ongoing conflict between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey, over the Turkish occupied northern part of Cyprus.[1] Initially, with the annexation of the island by the British Empire, the "Cyprus dispute" was identified as the conflict between the people of Cyprus and the British Crown regarding the Cypriots' demand for self determination. The dispute however was finally shifted from a colonial dispute to an ethnic dispute between the Turkish and the Greek islanders.[2] The international complications of the dispute stretch far beyond the boundaries of the island of Cyprus itself and involve the guarantor powers (Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom alike), along with the United States, the United Nations and the European Union. With Turkey's military action of 1974 (disapproved by UN Security Council Resolution 1974/360),[4] Turkey occupied the northern part of the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus, and later upon those territories the Turkish Cypriot community unilaterally declared independence forming the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a sovereign entity that lacks international recognition-with the exception of Turkey with which TRNC enjoys full diplomatic relations. After the two communities and the guarantor countries have committed themselves in finding a peaceful solution ...

The destruction of the Cultural Heritage of Cyprus by Turkey
This short film, which was an initiative of the Committee of Cyprus Occupied Municipalities, portrays the destruction of the cultural heritage of Cyprus by Turkey that has been taking place in the northern part of Cyprus since the Turkish military invasion in 1974. Turkey and the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime bear the sole responsibility for the present condition of hundreds of archaeological and religious monuments in the occupied areas: hundreds of religious monuments have been desecrated, looted or demolished; a significant number of churches have been converted into mosques, stables, dance studios, storehouses and one of them has become a morgue. Moreover, several archaeological places that were famous and recognized throughout the world were destroyed or illegally excavated while a great number of antiquities were smuggled and remain unfound until today. Script by: Anna Marangou Directed by: Michael Georgiades Produced by Mediabox Limited for the Committee of Cyprus Occupied Municipalities, Nicosia, 2011

*Update: Thanks to all of you who shared the video! Insane! 2500 views in 1 day (career high)!

Nicosia, known locally as Lefkosia, is the capital and largest city in Cyprus, as well as its main business centre. Nicosia is the only divided capital in the world, with the southern and the northern portions divided by a Green Line. Nicosia has been in continuous habitation since the beginning of the Bronze Age 2500 years BC which was then known as Ledra. On the 14th of August 1974 the Turkish army invaded Cyprus and captured 37% of Cypriot territory including the northern part of Nicosia. Despite that, with a population of 398,293 Nicosia is consistently ranked as one of the richest cities in the world in per capita income terms. Read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicosia
From what I know, this is the first “complete” timelapse of Nicosia. This video is a collection of about half the shots I wanted. I couldn’t cover all the desired locations and produce more shots. After 2 months of shooting, I decided to go with it and finish it. I might create a second one in the future.
I wanted to show a not-so-known face of Nicosia, somehow avoiding popular tourist landmarks. Even people who live in Nicosia will have a hard time identifying the locations of all the shots in the video (which imo is a good thing).
I tried to make the video as short as possible. Instead of going the usual route with a classical/chill out music and slow cuts, I decided to experiment with a fast paced edit following a fast-tempo music track.
I also need to get myself a slider! One shot, the one on the rooftop 2:20, took me 2 hours to finish. And it’s not perfect, moving from side to side at some points.
Shot on a Canon 5D MK2 with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens, graduated NDs 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and a Hoya 77mm Circular Polariser HD. Post-processed in Lightroom 4.

You’re my only form of advertisement. Please help me and share this video if you liked it!
I even included a cat to make the video more likeable! :p
Thanks! http://vimeo.com/sican/nicosia
Some stats: 70GB of data, 9445 photos (RAW but mostly JPGs), 49 shots, countless hours shooting, 2 months in the making and 1 Police incident (read about it here: http://alexcican.com/post/17712306442/incident ).

Lessons in Cypriot history - Mathimata kipriakis istorias
A Greek-Cypriot and a Turkish-Cypriot classroom and the “war” on the island’s history: The reporter of “The new Files” Katerina Lomvardea travels to Cyprus and visits the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot parts of the island, to reveal what young students never learn in their history classes. A significant account about the “half history” that is taught in Greek-Cypriot schools, when at the same time, the history books of Mehmet Ali Talat’s pseudo state have been altered substantially, with the nationalistic elements removed. With a rare special permission, “The New Files” go inside a Turkish-Cypriot classroom, and follow a class taught by one of the writers of the new books. In Nicosia, Katerina Lomvardea talks to the Minister of Education of Cyprus who tries to “avoid the mistakes made by Greece” in the educational reform which will change the history that is taught in schools, and meets the Archbishop of Cyprus, who is the protagonist of the “hard war” concerning the books and assures the show that he will ask students “to throw away the new books”.

Turkish proposals for Famagusta contrary to UN resolutions says Cyprus Foreign Minister
Midday news item in Greek 26th March 2012, from Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation about a Turkish newspaper Milliyet article about Turkey intending to announce 'opening of Famagusta' for a return of its residents (apparently proposed by the Turkish Cypriot side and having been discussed during the recent Eroglu talks in Ankara) , but it will remain under Turkish Cypriot administration - with a return of property to its owners with any disputes to be solved by the IPC - disagreement within the Turkish side about whether the Cyprus talks will be stopped by the Turkish side on July 1st.. Telephone report from the CyBC Turkey correspondent about the content of the newspaper article. Cyprus Minister for Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Marcoullis telephone interview about the above Milliyet article - the proposals by the Turkish side are in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions about the return of Famagusta - this is all part of Turkey trying to show that it allegedly wants a Cyprus solution but Cyprus will express its dissatisfaction to the UN and the EU.about the proposals being contrary to past UN resolutions regarding a 'return of Famagusta'. Famagusta mayor Galanos interviewed by phone said this is part of the campaign for Turkey to obtain 'recognition' of the secessionist entity in the Turkish occupied areas.expresses alarm about Turkish intentions, and urges no divergence from UN Security Council resolutions and high level agreements about the future of Famagusta.

Cyprus and EU flag raised to protest Turkey's continuing occupation
Theatro Technis has for many years been raising the flag of the Republic of Cyprus at its own building in London's Camden Town as part of its "Cyprus Week Festival" - to commemorate the Greek Military Junta coup and the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974. Whereas the Greek junta collapsed within days of the Turkish invasion of the island, Turkey eventually occupied 37% of the island and has continued its occupation of the island for the 38th year. Theatro Technis has chosen to also raise the flag of the European Union ever since the island's accession to the EU in 2004. As explained during this flag-raising event on 16/07/2012 (documented in this video) by the founder of Theatro Technis, George Eugeniou - prior to 1989 Camden Council had for some years invited him to join the Mayor of Camden Council in raising the flag of the Republic of Cyprus at the Camden Council Town Hall (as documented in the video archive recently released on this profile at ( youtu.be ) as a show of solidarity with the Republic of Cyprus. However, during the organising of the 1989 Cyprus Week Festival, one of the Turkish Cypriots who had participated in the organising committee for that event had objected to the flag raising event at the Town Hall, which eventually led to a major dispute with Camden Council who eventually cut off all of its funding to Theatro Technis and actually tried very hard to completely destroy the organisation. The objection of one single Turkish Cypriot participant in ...
