Tata Power (BSE: 500400) is India’s oldest and largest private sector electric utility company^{[2][citation needed]} with an installed generation capacity of over 5000 MW.^[3] On the 22 March 2011 it has announced partnership with Sunengy, to build India's first floating solar plant.^[4]

History[link]

The firm started as the Tata Hydroelectric Power Supply Company in 1911, which amalgamated with the Andhra Valley Power Supply Company in 1916; it commissioned India’s first^{[citation needed]} large hydro-electric project in 1915 in Bhivpuri and Khopoli, Karjat. Today the company is India’s largest^{[citation needed]} private sector electricity generating company with an installed generation capacity of over 5000 MW. It has a presence in thermal, hydro, solar and wind areas of power generation, transmission and retail.

The thermal power stations of the company are located at Trombay in Mumbai, Mundra in Gujarat, Jojobera and Maithon in Jharkhand, Haldia in West Bengal and Belgaum in Karnataka. The hydro stations are located in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra and the wind farms in Ahmednagar, Supa, Khanke, Brahmanwel, Gadag, Samana and Visapur.^{[citation needed]}. The company installed India’s first 500 MW unit at Trombay, the first 150 MW pumped storage unit at Bhira, and a flue gas desulphurization plant for pollution control at Trombay. It has generation capacities in the States of Jharkhand and Karnataka , and a distribution company in Delhi, servicing over one million consumers spread over 510 km² in the North Delhi area. The peak load in this area is about 1,259 MW, with energy consumption of over 6,900 MUs.^{[citation needed]}

International operations[link]

The company has executed overseas projects in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia including the Jebel Ali ‘G’ station (4 x 100 MW + desalination plant) in Dubai, Al-Khobar II (5 x 150 MW + desalination plant) and Jeddah III (4 x 64 MW + desalination plant) in Saudi Arabia, Shuwaikh (5 x 50 MW) in Kuwait, EHV substations in UAE and Algeria, and power plant operation and maintenance contracts in Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Strategic Electronics Division[link]

The firm's Strategic Electronics Division (SED) has engaged in defence systems and engineering for over four decades. It works with the MoD and laboratories to provide products and solutions for the defence requirements of the country.

It has already cleared the Joint Receipt Inspection (JRI) for the first two lots of Pinaka launchers and command posts; the third and fourth lots have successfully undergone factory acceptance tests.^{[citation needed]} It has recorded significant success in the offsets opportunity with five orders worth about Rs. 13 crores from IAI, Israel. Phased deliveries have already started.^{[citation needed]} Phase II of Bengaluru factory upgrade is underway.^{[citation needed]}

Future projects[link]

Tata Power has entered into a 51:49 joint venture with PowerGrid Corporation of India for the 1200 km Tala transmission project, India’s first transmission project executed with public-private partnership financing.^[5]

The company has won a contract for building 4000 MW power plant at Mundra. For the first time in India^{[citation needed]}, a 4000MW power plant is being built in one single large construction project; all earlier large projects have involved stage construction.^[6]

The company has also entered into a 74:26 joint venture with Damodar Valley Corporation for building a 1050 MW coal based thermal power plant at Maithon in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, into a 74:26 joint venture with Tata Steel Limited for setting up of power plants to meet the captive requirements of Tata Steel. It has commissioned 120MW power plant in Jojobera in 2009 and in the process of commissioning another 120 MW.^[6]

Tata Power has announced its partnership with Sunengy an Australian firm to build India's first floating solar plant based on Liquid Solar Array technology.^[7]

Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy, better known as N. R. Narayana Murthy (Kannada: ನಾಗವಾರ ರಾಮರಾವ್ ನಾರಾಯಣ ಮೂರ್ತಿ ), is an Indian software entrepreneur who co-founded Infosys Technologies Ltd., the first Indian company to be listed on an American stock exchange. In 2011, he stepped down from the board and became chairman emeritus.

Early life[link]

Born in Mysore, Karnataka on 20 August 1946, Murthy earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Mysore in 1967 and a master’s degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1969.^[3]

Business career[link]

During the 1970s he worked in Paris, where, among other projects, he helped design an operating system for handling air cargo at Charles de Gaulle Airport. Returning to India, he accepted a position with a computer systems company in Pune, but eventually he decided to launch his own company. He co-founded Infosys with six fellow computer professionals in 1981.^[4] He borrowed Rs 10,000/- from his wife Sudha Murthy to the company.

The company grew slowly until the early 1990s, when the Indian government’s decisive move toward economic liberalization and deregulation contributed to dramatic growth in the country’s high-technology and computer sectors. Murthy aggressively expanded his company’s services and client base, negotiating deals with many overseas businesses to provide them with consulting, systems integration, software development, and product engineering services. By 1999 Infosys had joined NASDAQ, becoming the first Indian company to be listed on an American stock exchange.^[5]

Murthy served as the CEO of Infosys for 21 years and was succeeded by co-founder Nandan Nilekani in 2002. At Infosys he articulated, designed and implemented the Global Delivery Model which has become the foundation for the huge success in IT services outsourcing from India. He held the executive position of Chairman of the Board from 2002 to 2006, when he became the "non-executive" Chairman of the Board and Chief Mentor.^[6] In August 2011, he retired completely from the company and taking the title Chairman Emeritus.^[7][8]

His wife, Sudha Murthy (née Kulkarni), is an Indian social worker and accomplished author. She is known for her philanthropic work through the Infosys Foundation. Her sister, Jayashree Deshpande is wife of enterpreneur and founder of US-based Sycamore Networks, Gururaj Deshpande. Murthy is the brother-in-law of serial entrepreneur Gururaj "Desh" Deshpande.^[11]

Sir Ratan Naval Tata KBE (Gujarati: રતન નવલ ટાટા; born 28 December 1937) is an Indian businessman who became chairman (1991– ) of the Tata Group, a Mumbai-based conglomerate.^[2] He is a member of a prominent family of Indian industrialists and philanthropists (see Tata family).

Among many other honours accorded him during his career, Tata received the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s most distinguished civilian awards, in 2000 and Padma Vibhushan in 2008.^[3] He has also been ranked as India's most powerful CEO.^[4]

Early life[link]

Ratan Tata was adopted to famous Tata , a prominent family belonging to the Parsi community. Ratan is the grandson of Tata group founder Jamsedji Tata. His childhood was troubled, with his parents separating in the mid-1940s when he was merely seven and his younger brother Jimmy was five years old. Their mother moved out and both Ratan and his brother were raised by their grandmother Lady Navajbai.^[5]

Tata started his schooling at Campion School and finished at Cathedral and John Connon School both in Bombay.^[6] Ratan Tata completed his B.S. in architecture with structural engineering from Cornell University in 1962, and the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in 1975.^[7] He is a part of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity.^[8]

Career at Tata Sons[link]

When he returned to India in 1962 after turning down a job with IBM on the advice of JRD, he was sent to Jamshedpur to work on the shop floor at Tata Steel with other blue-collar employees, shovelling limestone and handling the blast furnace.^[9] In 1971, he was appointed the Director of National Radio and Electronics (Nelco), which was in dire straits when he came on board: with losses of 40% and barely 2% share of the consumer electronics market. However, just when he turned it around (from 2% to 25% market share), the Emergency was declared. A weak economy and labour issues compounded the problem and Nelco was quickly near collapse again.

For his next assignment, in 1977 he was asked to turn around the sick Empress Mills, which he did. However, he was refused a Rs 50 lakh investment required to make the textile unit competitive. Empress Mills floundered and was finally closed in 1986.

In 1981, JRD Tata stepped down as Tata Industries chairman, naming Ratan as his successor. He was heavily criticized for lacking experience in running a company of the scale of Tata Industries.^[9]

In 1991, he was appointed group chairman of the Tata group. As group chairman, he has been responsible for converting "the corporate commonwealth" of different Tata-affiliated companies into a cohesive company. He has been responsible for the acquisition of Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover and Corus, which have turned Tata from a largely India-centric company into a global business, with 65% revenues coming from abroad. He also pushed the development of Indica and the Nano. He is widely credited for the success of the Tata Group of companies, especially after the liberalization of controls after the 1990s.^[1]

In August 2007, Ratan Tata lead Tata Group's acquisition of British steel maker Corus. At that time, this was the largest takeover of a foreign company by an Indian company, and resulted in Tata Group becoming the fifth largest steel producer in the world. According to the BBC, however, some analysts criticized the move, saying that Tata Group had overpaid for Corus and had prioritized national pride before its shareholders.^[10]

Tata is set to retire in December 2012 to be succeeded by Cyrus Mistry, the 42-year-old son of Pallonji Mistry and managing director of Shapoorji Pallonji Group.^[11]

Honours, awards and international recognition[link]

Ratan Tata serves in senior capacities in various organisations in India and he is a member of the Prime Minister's Council on Trade and Industry. Tata is on the board of governors of the East-West Center, the advisory board of RAND's Center for Asia Pacific Policy and serves on the program board of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's India AIDS initiative.^[12]

Ratan Tata's foreign affiliations include membership of the international advisory boards of the Mitsubishi Corporation, the American International Group, JP Morgan Chase and Booz Allen Hamilton. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the RAND Corporation, University of Southern California and Cornell University.^[13][14] He also serves as a board member on the Republic of South Africa's International Investment Council and is a member of the Asia-Pacific advisory committee for the New York Stock Exchange. In 2010, he joined BMB Group as an advisory board member.

Shekhar Gupta (born 26 August 1957) is the editor-in-chief of The Indian Express.^[1]. Shekhar has a weekly column called National Interest. It covers a range of issues and is the subject of his forthcoming book. He also hosts an interview-based programme Walk the Talk on NDTV 24x7. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for the year 2009 for his contribution to the field of journalism.^[2]

Shekhar has received assorted awards: the 1985 Inlaks award for young journalist of the year^[3], G K Reddy Award for Journalism^[4], the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award for National Integration.^[5][6] He was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Govt of India in 2009.^[2][7]

Under his leadership, The Indian Express has won the Vienna-based International Press Institute’s Award for Outstanding Journalism in the Public Interest thrice- the first time for its coverage of the Gujarat riots of 2002, the second time for uncovering the Bihar flood relief scam in 2005 and the third time for its sustained investigation into the Malegaon and Modasa blasts of 2008 and the alleged role of Hindu extremists and organisations.^[8]

Lalit Jalan is the CEO & Whole time Director of Reliance Infrastructure Ltd.^[1] & also the Chairman of BSES Rajdhani & BSES Yamnua Pvt Ltd.^[2]

He joined Reliance Industries Limited as Chief Executive Officer, Polypropylene Business in 1995. At 39, he was the youngest ever CEO at Reliance.

He did his MBA in Finance from Wharton School and MS in Computer Science from Moore School, University of Pennsylvania, 1982. Prior to that he did his BTech from IIT, Kanpur in 1979. He graduated throughout in top 2% of his class. He was the winner of Directors Honours and Deans List at Wharton.

He has been awarded the Distinguised Alumni Award from IIT, Kanpur. He was also showcased as one of the 15 achievers from the IIT system at the 1st PAN IIT meet in California in January’ 2003.

In 2009, he was ranked at 70th position in the Economic Times elite list of India’s 100 Most Powerful CEOs.^[3] He has recently been selected in the IIK@ 50 at the Golden Jubilee Alumni Convention at IIT Kanpur in Jan’ 2010.
